Lead Isotope Ratio Data Base for Bronze Objects at the National Museum of Korea (II) (국립중앙박물관소장 청동유물의 납동위원소비 데이터베이스 구축(II))

  • The Conservation Science Team of National Museum of Korea has established the data base of lead isotope ratio as the scientific research of bronze patina, which was acquired from conservtion process of metal objects, and based on this result, it intends to conduct the research related to the origin of raw material for the bronze objects. As the equipment for analysis of lead isotope ratio of the bronze patina, the thermal ionization mass spectrometer(TIMS) was used. As a part of this study, in 2nd year 2008, lead isotope ratios of total 18 samples inclding 2 samples of Round-type gold-bronze belong to Baekje period, the 2 items of head of bronze arrow belong to Nangnang(Lelang) and 10 items of the flower-shaped bronze dishes from the Unified Silla period, the 4 items of the bronze patina from the objects(era of 1 item not identified) of Wonpungtongbo(year 1078-North Sung) were analyzed.

  • The Divine Bell of King Seongdeok was completed in 771 A.D. It is a true masterpiece both grand in its size and style (height 3.66 m, diameter 2.23 m, thickness 20.3 cm, weight 18.9 ton), illustrating the essence of the Korean bronze culture. However, there are no remaining records about its casting: where the raw material came from, how the materials were mixed and how the bell was casted. The absence of such records has limited the understanding of the bell. This article contains analysis of three samples collected from a protruding part inside of the bell during a safety test for the bell by the Gyeongju National Museum. The main issues are the element composition of the bell, microstructure on the casting time and the source where the raw material came from.

  • Currently, as we enter the 21st century, the level and interest of society, culture, economy, and science are rapidly developing, but science education is still struggling. In order to increase the efficiency of science education, it is most important to focus on elementary education based on basic science. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the main causes of Korea's science museum's regression as a museum focusing on experience, interest, and fun such as simple science experience centers and science theme parks. To this end, the influencing factors were identified by applying the algorithm of the actor-based model based on the data on the exhibition space and the exhibition movement of the science museum completed and operated in Korea over the past 5 years, and the problem of the visitor movement in the exhibition space was analyzed through the space system. In this study, it was confirmed that the exhibition environment was the best when the linear plot movement system and the picalesque plot were applied simultaneously in the museum's exhibition narrative theory, and the arrangement of major exhibition spaces, width of exhibition spaces, and separation of spaces for exhibition purposes were derived.

Conservation of the Lacquered Sheath Excavated from Soochon-ri, Gongju, Korea (공주 수촌리 출토 칠기 칼집의 보존)

  • This study was conducted to analysis and conserve a lacquered sheath excavated from Soochon-ri, Gongju, Korea. The lacquered sheath was collected together with iron relics. The lacquered sheath was damaged and lost the parts by the external pressure. Many parts were adhered with the rust. Firstly, the object was understanded to have the relation with the iron materials excavated together through the X-ray photographs. As the analysis of the lacquer layers, the report conducted to a study the method of production. After the analysis of relic, the conservation treatment was performed for the stability of original shape. And we made the protection frame for the storage and exhibition.

The Study of Docent System Improvement for Revitalization of Science Museum (과학관 활성화를 위한 도슨트 제도 개선 연구)

  • The revitalization of science museum depends on the number of qualified docents who can meet the museum visitors' educational needs. However, the current unstructured docent system is not sufficient to meet the goal. Forty six docents currently working in science museums were surveyed about docent training program, current working conditions, and docent professional program in order to propose a viable system providing a docent profession. Data were collected through surveys with 46 docents, interviews with two experienced docents, and several artifacts from the science museum and selected docents. The surveys consisted of 47 items asking about personal biography, docent's perception, docents training program they took, current working conditions, and supplementary professional program. The conclusion of this study is as follows; First, there must be recognition about docents who can play educator's roles which are different from those of general volunteers in terms of recruiting and training system in science museum. Second, docents need to take training and supplementary professional courses that focus on observing and educating visitors in the field. Third, we need a docent management system by employing a well structured evaluating tools. A well established docent system will bring forth the enhancement of science museum education and the increase of science popularization by providing visitors with the quality educational services.

  • The purpose of this study is to review the historical development of British Museum Library and its cataloging rules which really marked the beginning of the modern era of cataloguing. The results of the study can be summarized as follows (1) Sir Anthony Panizzi was the most creative force in the history of the British Museum Library. He devoted himself to the formation of the British Museum Library cataloging policy and the compilation of printed catalogues. Moreover, he laid down the sound acquisitions policy and the vigorous a n.0, pplication of the copyright deposit privilege. He designed a great circular reading room and raised standards of library service and administration. (2) British Museum Library Cataloging Rules : 1. are notable for their pioneering efforts-this was the first major catalogue code-and for their influence on all subsequent codes. 2. introduced the concept of corporate authorship but has never dealt with problem very satisfactory. 3. went to great lengths to avoid title entry. 4. used a number of form heading, example for, ACADEMIES, PERIODICAL PUBLICATION, EPHEMERIDES, CATALOGUES etc.

Understanding Visitor Learning in a Natural History Museum : A Case of Dyadic Discourses

  • This study explores visitor learning in a natural history museum from the perspectives of situated learning. The purpose of this study is to understand how the visitors construct knowledge from museum experiences through dyadic discourses. The participants were two university students. They moved naturally through the exhibition with no predetermined path in a natural history museum in Korea. Data were collected in the form of audio-recorded dyadic discourses at and between exhibits and were transcribed. The transcription was coded using the conversation coding scheme, and categorized into specific learning types. The findings included (1) the characteristics of learning talks and (2) learning types created by dyadic discourses at and between exhibitions within learning contexts as museum learning experiences. Implications and future research related to visitor learning in informal learning settings were discussed based on the findings.

Research on the Participant Satisfaction and the Contribution of Public Educational Programs to School Education - A Case Study of the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History (자연사박물관 교육프로그램에 대한 참가 학생과 학부모의 만족도 및 학교교육과의 연계에 대한 인식 조사: 서대문자연사박물관을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the participant satisfaction of public educational programs being carried out in Natural History Museum and the contribution of these programs to normal school education and to suggest an improved framework for public education programs in Natural History Museum. For this study, we choose Seodaemun Museum of Natural History in Seodaemungu, Seoul, in which more than 30,000 students have participated in the educational programs for the last 6 years. This museum has been providing more than 60 science education programs every year. Based on a public census among participating students and accompanying parents, we investigated the satisfaction ratings of education programs provided by Natural History Museum and their contribution to school science education. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) It is desired to have the education program contents well connected to the exhibits of the Museum and to increase time for experiments and practice. (2) It is required to improve the ease of access and to enhance the public awareness about the program itself. (3) The biggest consensus among participants is that the education programs by Natural History Museum should be focused on strengthening the research ability and scientific attitude rather than on acquiring knowledge, which will contribute to school education more significantly in the end.
