Glioma is one of the common types of brain tumors starting in the brain's glial cell. These tumors are classified into low-grade or high-grade tumors. Physicians analyze the stages of brain tumors and suggest treatment to the patient. The status of the tumor has an importance in the treatment. Nowadays, computerized systems are used to analyze and classify brain tumors. The accurate grading of the tumor makes sense in the treatment of brain tumors. This paper aims to develop a classification of low-grade glioma and high-grade glioma using a deep learning algorithm. This system utilizes four transfer learning algorithms, i.e., AlexNet, GoogLeNet, ResNet18, and ResNet50, for classification purposes. Among these algorithms, ResNet18 shows the highest classification accuracy of 97.19%.
This study presents a novel approach of discriminative feature vectors based on manifold learning using nonlinear dimension reduction (DR) technique to improve loss function, and combine with the Adversarial examples to regularize the object function for image classification. The traditional convolutional neural networks (CNN) with many new regularization approach has been successfully used for image classification tasks, and it achieved good results, hence it costs a lot of Calculated spacing and timing. Significantly, distrinct from traditional CNN, we discriminate the feature vectors for objects without empirically-tuned parameter, these Discriminative features intend to remain the lower-dimensional relationship corresponding high-dimension manifold after projecting the image feature vectors from high-dimension to lower-dimension, and we optimize the constrains of the preserving local features based on manifold, which narrow the mapped feature information from the same class and push different class away. Using Adversarial examples, improved loss function with additional regularization term intends to boost the Robustness and generalization of neural network. experimental results indicate that the approach based on discriminative feature of manifold learning is not only valid, but also more efficient in image classification tasks. Furthermore, the proposed approach achieves competitive classification performances for three benchmark datasets : MNIST, CIFAR-10, SVHN.

The utilization of department information in bibliometric analysis using scientific and technological literature is highly advantageous. In this paper, the department information dataset was built through the screening, data refinement, and classification processing of authors' department type belonging to university institutions appearing in academic journals in the field of science and technology published in Korea, and the automatic classification model based on deep learning was developed using the department information dataset as learning data and verification data. In addition, we analyzed the co-authorship structure and network in the field of computer science using the department information dataset and affiliation information of authors from domestic academic journals. The research resulted in a 98.6% accuracy rate for the automatic classification model using Korean department information. Moreover, the co-authorship patterns of Korean researchers in the computer science and engineering field, along with the characteristics and centralities of the co-author network based on institution type, region, institution, and department type, were identified in detail and visually presented on a map.
Classification in biomedical applications is an important task that predicts or classifies an outcome based on a given set of input variables such as diagnostic tests or the symptoms of a patient. Traditionally the classification algorithms would have to digest a stationary set of historical data in order to train up a decision-tree model and the learned model could then be used for testing new samples. However, a new breed of classification called stream-based classification can handle continuous data streams, which are ever evolving, unbound, and unstructured, for instance--biosignal live feeds. These emerging algorithms can potentially be used for real-time classification over biosignal data streams like EEG and ECG, etc. This paper presents a pioneer effort that studies the feasibility of classification algorithms for analyzing biosignals in the forms of infinite data streams. First, a performance comparison is made between traditional and stream-based classification. The results show that accuracy declines intermittently for traditional classification due to the requirement of model re-learning as new data arrives. Second, we show by a simulation that biosignal data streams can be processed with a satisfactory level of performance in terms of accuracy, memory requirement, and speed, by using a collection of stream-mining algorithms called Optimized Very Fast Decision Trees. The algorithms can effectively serve as a corner-stone technology for real-time classification in future biomedical applications.

Unsupervised learning has shown good performance on image, video and audio classification tasks, and much progress has been made so far. It studies how systems can learn to represent particular input patterns in a way that reflects the statistical structure of the overall collection of input patterns. Many promising deep learning systems are commonly trained by the greedy layerwise unsupervised learning manner. The performance of these deep learning architectures benefits from the unsupervised learning ability to disentangling the abstractions and picking out the useful features. However, the existing unsupervised learning algorithms are often difficult to train partly because of the requirement of extensive hyperparameters. The tuning of these hyperparameters is a laborious task that requires expert knowledge, rules of thumb or extensive search. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective unsupervised feature learning algorithm for image classification, which exploits an explicit optimizing way for population and lifetime sparsity. Firstly, a sparse target matrix is built by the competitive rules. Then, the sparse features are optimized by means of minimizing the Euclidean norm ($L_2$) error between the sparse target and the competitive layer outputs. Finally, a classifier is trained using the obtained sparse features. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves good performance for image classification, and provides discriminative features that generalize well.

In South Korea, the results of R&D in science and technology are submitted to the National Science and Technology Information Service (NTIS) in reports that have Korea national science and technology standard classification codes (K-NSCC). However, considering there are more than 2000 sub-categories, it is non-trivial to choose correct classification codes without a clear understanding of the K-NSCC. In addition, there are few cases of automatic document classification research based on the K-NSCC, and there are no training data in the public domain. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to build a highly performing K-NSCC classification system based on NTIS report meta-information from the last five years (2013-2017). To this end, about 210 mid-level categories were selected, and we conducted preprocessing considering the characteristics of research report metadata. More specifically, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) technique using only task names and keywords, which are the most influential fields. The proposed model is compared with several machine learning methods (e.g., the linear support vector classifier, CNN, gated recurrent unit, etc.) that show good performance in text classification, and that have a performance advantage of 1% to 7% based on a top-three F1 score.

Raman spectroscopy is an equipment that is widely used for classifying chemicals in chemical defense operations. However, the classification performance of Raman spectrum may deteriorate due to dark current noise, background noise, spectral shift by vibration of equipment, spectral shift by pressure change, etc. In this paper, we compare the classification accuracy of various machine learning algorithms including k-nearest neighbor, decision tree, linear discriminant analysis, linear support vector machine, nonlinear support vector machine, and convolutional neural network under noisy and spectral shifted conditions. Experimental results show that convolutional neural network maintains a high classification accuracy of over 95 % despite noise and spectral shift. This implies that convolutional neural network can be an ideal classification algorithm in a real combat situation where there is a lot of noise and spectral shift.

The automatic identification and classification of image-based weld defects is a difficult task due to the complex texture of the X-ray images of the weld defect. Several depth learning methods for automatically identifying welds were proposed and tested. In this work, four different depth convolutional neural networks were evaluated and compared on the 1631 image set. The concavity, undercut, bar defects, circular defects, unfused defects and incomplete penetration in the weld image 6 different types of defects are classified. Another contribution of this paper is to train a CNN model "RayNet" for the dataset from scratch. In the experiment part, the parameters of convolution operation are compared and analyzed, in which the experimental part performs a comparative analysis of various parameters in the convolution operation, compares the size of the input image, gives the classification results for each defect, and finally shows the partial feature map during feature extraction with the classification accuracy reaching 96.5%, which is 6.6% higher than the classification accuracy of other existing fine-tuned models, and even improves the classification accuracy compared with the traditional image processing methods, and also proves that the model trained from scratch also has a good performance on small-scale data sets. Our proposed method can assist the evaluators in classifying pipeline welding defects.
Many studies have generally used a large number of pure pixels as an approach to training set design. The training set are used, however, varies between classifiers. In the recent research, it was reported that small mixed pixels between classes are actually more useful than larger pure pixels of each class in Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification. We evaluated a usability of small mixed pixels as a training set for the classification of high-resolution satellite imagery. We presented an advanced approach to obtain a mixed pixel readily, and evaluated the appropriateness with the land cover classification from IKONOS satellite imagery. The results showed that the accuracy of the classification based on small mixed pixels is nearly identical to the accuracy of the classification based on large pure pixels. However, it also showed a limitation that small mixed pixels used may provide insufficient information to separate the classes. Small mixed pixels of the class border region provide cost-effective training sets, but its use with other pixels must be considered in use of high-resolution satellite imagery or relatively complex land cover situations.

Classification of persons wearing and not wearing face masks in images has emerged as a new computer vision problem during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to address this problem and scale up the research in this domain, in this paper a hybrid technique by employing ResNet-101 and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifier has been proposed. The proposed technique is tested and validated on a self-created face masks classification dataset and a standard dataset. On self-created dataset, the proposed technique achieved a classification accuracy of 97.3%. To embrace the proposed technique, six other state-of-the-art CNN feature extractors with six other classical machine learning classifiers have been tested and compared with the proposed technique. The proposed technique achieved better classification accuracy and 1-6% higher precision, recall, and F1 score as compared to other tested deep feature extractors and machine learning classifiers.
