  • Dairy products are extensively used as carriers of probiotic strains that have potential health benefits. Assessment of the viability of probiotic strains during manufacturing is important to ensure that products meet recommended levels. Hence, the method for accurately quantifying lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in probiotic or dairy products is required. The present study aims to examine the performance of de-Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS), plate count agar with bromocresol purple (PCA with BCP), and glucose blood liver (BL) agars recommended in the Korea Food Code guidelines for counting LAB. Analysis of the performance of culture media containing 19 lactic acid bacterial species commonly encountered in probiotic and dairy products showed no statistically significant difference between 18 reference strains and three culture media (p > 0.01). Furthermore, the suitability of three culture media was verified for the quantitative assessment of LAB in 25 probiotic and dairy products. The number of LAB in three culture media was determined to be more than 107 colony-forming unit (CFU)/ml for fermented milk products and 108 CFU/ml for condensed fermented milk and probiotic products, indicating that they all satisfied the Korea Food Code guidelines. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in the amount of LAB counted in all three culture media, suggesting that they can be used to isolate or enumerate LAB in commercial products. Finally, three culture media will be useful for isolating and enumerating LAB from fermented foods as well as gut microflora.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of cysteamine addition during in vitro maturation, fertilization and culture of porcine oocytes. Oocytes were matured for the first 22 h in mTCM -199 media supplemented with or without 150 $\mu$M cysteamine. They then were matured for an additional 22 h in mTCM-199 media without hormones supplemented with or without 150 $\mu$M cysteamine. When cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were matured in the mTCM-199 media supplemented with cysteamine, the rates of GVBD and maturation (metaphase II) were enhanced as compared to the media without the addition of cysteamine. Also, when COCs were matured in the mTCM-199 media supplemented with cysteamine, the rates of sperm penetration, male pronucleus formation, cleavage and blastocyst formation after in vitro fertilization were enhanced as compared to the media without the addition of cysteamine. In conclusion, it was suggested that oocytes matured for the first 22 h in mTCM-199 media supplemented with 150 $\mu$M cysteamine increased the rates of metaphase II, sperm penetration, male pronucleus and blastocyst formation were higher as compared to the media without addition of cysteamine.

  • A K-band low-power miniaturized planar-type hyperthermia system was developed to replace massive and expensive equipment. The system consists of a VCO with a buffer amplifier, a high-power amplifier module, a 20-dB-coupled line coupler, a chip circulator and two power detectors for signal generation, amplification and power monitoring. All these components have been implemented in planar form on two module blocks. The total size of the hyperthermia system was less than $10\times6.5\times3\;cm^3$. In order to verify the system performance, ablations were carried out on nude mice xenografted with human breast cancer. Ablation results show performance comparable to the massive components-based system. This work shows the feasibility of a low-cost miniaturized hyperthermia system for practical clinical applications.

  • Purpose: This study aims at investigating how high-tech SMEs can enhance innovation performance through the application and distribution of social media strategic capability and whether entrepreneurial orientation moderates the relationship between social media strategic capability and innovation. Research design, data, and methodology: The study followed a deductive approach based on the quantitative design in investigating the proposed relationships. The data was collected using a questionnaire, and the proposed relationships were examined based on a sample of 221 high-tech SMEs through the application of structural equation modeling (SEM). By applying SEM, this study accounted for hidden and unobservable factors as well as reconciled the potential measurement errors. Results: As hypothesized, it was confirmed that social media strategic capability positively influences innovation performance. Besides, the findings supported the moderating effect of three dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation (innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking) toward the relationship between social media strategic capability and innovation performance. Conclusions: According to the results, high-tech SMEs can enhance their innovation performance through social media by distributing and applying social media strategic capability along with entrepreneurial orientation. This study thereby enriches the literature of innovation on high-tech SMEs for implementing social media strategies as well as stimulating future social media research for entrepreneurship.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to produce resin prosthetics using a dental barrel finishing machine. For dental resin grinding, the ingredients of the barrel finishing media were analyzed, and surface residues of the resin were observed. Methods: Two types of barrel finishing media for dental resin grinding were tested. Specimens were made from thermal polymerized, auto polymerized, and photopolymerized resins. Finishing media were analyzed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) component analysis and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) component analysis. Then, the prepared specimen was barrel finished for 25 minutes using two types of barrel finishing media, and scanning electron microscope was photographed to observe the surface residues. Results: As a result of EDS component analysis, both types of finishing media were analyzed for the components of C, O, Zr and Al elements, and industry media (IM) was further analyzed for the components of Si and Mg elements. In the ICP-OES component analysis, Cd and As, which are harmful elements, were detected in IM, and no harmful elements were detected in manufacturing media (MM). Because of observation of surface residues, no residues were observed in the three types of resin specimens that were barrel finished with two types of finishing media. Conclusion: Surface residue wasn't observed on the specimens polished using two types of finishing media. However, in IM, Cd and As, which are harmful elements, were detected, making it inappropriate for clinical use. In MM, harmful elements were not detected; therefore, clinical use will be possible.

  • Using fractal dimensionality theory proposed by Riew and Sposito (1991), we attempted to analyze quantitatively the characteristics of porous distribution for built-in soils in the mini-lysimeter and artificial seed-bed media. The 2" stainless core soil samples were taken from lysimeter soils. Artificial seed-bed media were compacted in the acrylic core filled with raw materials consisted of cocopeat, zeolite and perlite. N (Constant number of partitioned group size smaller media volumes) and r (Self-similarity ratio) parameters consisting of fractal dimension D=log(N)/log(1/r) were obtained by Excel Programme using the Riew and Sposito's fractal model. The pore distribution of tested media was screened in pore size and its occurring frequency. The results reveal that the distribution range of pores is wider in the lysimeter soils than in the seed-bed media, while average size of pores in the media is smaller in lysimeter core soils than in seed-bed media.
