  • We have synthesized a series of push-pull porphyrins containing both donor and acceptor substituents at the mesopositions and have examined their spectral and biological properties. The push-pull porphyrins containing both strong donor $NH_2$ and acceptor $NO_2$ at meso-positions, in which donor group condensed with the ligand, (2,6-bis(4-methylpiperazine-1-yl-methyl)-4-formlyphenol (L) to form imine linkages with porphyrin. The Schiff base ligand 5-[4-(2,6-bis(4-methylpiperazine-1-yl-methyl)-4-iminomethylphenol)phenyl]-10,15,20-tris(4-nitrophenyl) porphyrin [$an_3$(TPP)L] can be synthesized from 2,6-bis(4-methylpiperazine-1-yl-methyl)-4-formylphenol (L) and 5-(4-aminophenyl)-10, 15,20-tris(4-nitrophenyl)porphyrin. The push-pull porphyrin [$an_3$(TPP)L] was metallated to get copper, nickel and zinc complexes. The spectral, electrochemical, antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxicity properties of all the donor- acceptor push-pull porphyrins and their complexes were characterized and studied.

  • Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of cobalt-Schiff (Co-SB) base complexes, Co(salen) [N-N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-ethylenediimino cobalt(II)] and Co(salophen) [N-N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-1,2-pheny-lenediimino cobalt(II)], have been c arried out to test them as oxygen reduction catalysts. Both compounds were found to form an adduct with oxygen and exhibit catalytic activities for oxygen reduction. Comparison of spec-tra obtained from electrooxidized complexes with those from Co-SB complexes equilibrated with oxygen in-dicates that the latter are consistent with the postulated complex formed with oxygen occupying the coaxial ligand position, namely, Co(III)-SB·O2 - .The catalysis of oxygen reduction is thus achieved by reducing Co(III) in the oxygen-Co-SB adduct, releasing the oxygen reduction product, e.g., O2 - ., from the Co(II)-SB complex.

  • In the present study, at first, 2,4-Dihydroxy Salophen (2,4-DHS), has been synthesized by combination of 1, 2-diaminobenzene and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde in a solvent system. This ligand containing meta-quinone functional groups were characterized using UV-Vis and IR spectroscopies. Subsequently, the interaction between native calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (ct-DNA) and 2,4-DHS, was investigated in 10 mM Tris/HCl buffer solution, pH 7.2, using UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, thermal denaturation technique and viscosity measurements. From spectrophotometric titration experiments, the binding constant of 2,4-DHS with ct-DNA was found to be (1.1 ${\pm}\;0.2)\;{\times}\;10^4\;M^{-1}.$ The fluorescence study represents the quenching effect of 2,4-DHS on bound ethidium bromide to DNA. The quenching process obeys linear Stern-Volmer equation in extended range of 2,4-DHS concentration. Thermal denaturation experiments represent the increasing of melting temperature of DNA (about 3.5 ${^{\circ}C}$) due to binding of 2,4-DHS. These results are consistent with a binding mode dominated by interactions with the groove of ct-DNA.

  • Polymeric electrodes for lead ion based on N,N'-bis-thiophen-2-ylmethylene-pyridine-2,6-diamine as an ion carrier were prepared. The membrane electrode (m-3) containing o-NPOE as a plasticizer and 50 mol% additive of ionophore gives an excellent Nernstian response (29.59 mV/decade) and the limit of detection of ?log a (M) = 5.74 to Pb2+ in Pb(NO3)2 solution at room temperature. The prepared electrode provided good sensitivity and outstanding selectivity and response for Pb2+ over a wide variety of other metal ions in pH 7.0 buffer solutions. The good sensitivity and selectivity towards lead ion are attributed to the strong complexation of lead ion to N,N'-bis-thiophen-2-ylmethylene-pyridine-2,6-diamine which has geometrically the proper cavity to coordinate to the ligand.

  • A novel method was developed for the speciation of chromium in natural water samples based on homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction and determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). In this method, Cr(III) reacts with a new Schiff's base ligand to form the hydrophobic complex, which is subsequently entrapped in the sediment phase, whereas Cr(VI) remained in aqueous phase. The Cr(VI) assay is based on its reduction to Cr(III) by the addition of sodium sulfite to the sample solution. Thus, separation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) could be realized. Homogeneous liquid-liquid extraction based on the pH-independent phase-separation process was investigated using a ternary solvent system (water-tetrabutylammonium ion ($TBA^+$)-chloroform) for the preconcentration of chromium. The phase separation phenomenon occurred by an ion-pair formation of TBA and perchlorate ion. Then sedimented phase was separated using a $100\;{\mu}L$ micro-syringe and diluted to 1.0 mL with ethanol. The sample was introduced into the flame by conventional aspiration. After the optimization of complexation and extraction conditions such as pH = 9.5, [ligand] = $1.0{\times}10^{-4}\;M$, [$TBA^+$] = $2.0{\times}10^{-2}\;M$, [$CHCl_3$] = $100.0\;{\mu}L$ and [$ClO_4$] = $2.0{\times}10{-2}\;M$, a preconcentration factor (Va/Vs) of 100 was obtained for only 10 mL of the sample. The relative standard deviation was 2.8% (n = 10). The limit of detection was sufficiently low and lie at ppb level. The proposed method was applied for the extraction and determination of chromium in natural water samples with satisfactory results.

  • Novel chromium(III), manganese(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), ruthenium(III), and zirconyl(II) complexes of $N^1,N^2$-bis(3-((3-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylene-amino)propyl)phthalamide ($H_4L$, 1) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental, physical, and spectral analyses. The spectral data showed that the ligand behaves as either neutral tridentate ligand as in complexes 2-5 with the general formula $[H_4LMX_2(H_2O)]{\cdot}nH_2O$ (M=Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), X = Cl or $NO_3$), neutral hexadentate ligand as in complexes 10-12 with the general formula $[H_4LM_2Cl_6]{\cdot}nH_2O$ (M=Fe(III), Cr(III) or Ru(III)), or dibasic hexadentate ligand as in complexes 6-9 with the general formula $[H_2LM_2Cl_2(H_2O)_4]{\cdot}nH_2O$ (M = Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) or Mn(II), and 13 with general formula $[H_4L(ZrO)_2Cl_2]{\cdot}8H_2O$. Molar conductance in DMF solution indicated the non-ionic nature of the complexes. The ESR spectra of solid copper(II) complexes 2, 5, and 6 showed $g_{\parallel}$ >g> $g_e$, indicating distorted octahedral structure and the presence of the unpaired electron in the $N^1,N^2$ orbital with significant covalent bond character. For the dimeric copper(II) complex $[H_2LCu_2Cl_2(H_2O)_4]{\cdot}3H_2O$ (6), the distance between the two copper centers was calculated using field zero splitting parameter for the parallel component that was estimated from the ESR spectrum. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the compounds showed that, some of metal complexes exhibited a greater inhibitory effect than standard drug as tetracycline (bacteria) and Amphotricene B (fungi).

  • A $N_2O_2$ Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(4-methoxysalicylidene)phenylendiamine (4-$CH_3O$-salphen) was synthesized. Using the 4-$CH_3O$-salphen, the spectrophoto-metric quantitative analysis of Cu(II) ion in aqueous solution was performed. The optimum condition for the quantitative analysis of Cu(II) ion was determined as the following; the concentration of 4-$CH_3O$-salphen is $2.0{\times}10^{-4}\;mol/L$, ratio between solvent DMSO and water is 50/50(v/v), pH is 5.5. After 1 hr water incubation at $55^{\circ}C$ and then the absorbance measurements at 388 nm, a calibration curve (${\varepsilon}=3.6{\times}10^4\;mol^{-1}cm^{-1}$) with a correlation coefficient ($R^2$=0.9963) was obtained in this condition. Using this optimized condition, the quantitative analysis of Cu(II) ion was performed with various samples such as hot spring water, semiconductor factory waste water and treated water from sewage treatment plant. The average value of the measured values agreed well with standard value with a range of 0.6~5.4%. The limit of determination was 31.77 ng/mL ($5.0{\times}10^{-7}\;mol/L$).

  • A novel $N_2O_2$ Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(4-methoxysalicylidene)phenylendiamine(4-$CH_3O$-Salphen), has been synthesized. It has been revealed that the compound is very useful for the spectrophotometric quantification of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions in aqueous solutions, such as mineral water, hot spring water, sea water, and waste water. The optimum conditions for the quantitative analysis are the followings; [4-$CH_3O$-Salphen]=$4.0{\times}10^{-4}\;M$, DMF/$H_2O$=70/30(v/v), pH=3.4~3.8, T= at $55^{\circ}C$, and prereaction time=1.0 hr. The sample of single valence state was prepared by the preliminary oxidation or reduction using $H_2O_2$ ($5.0{\times}10^{-4}\;M$) and $NH_2OH{\cdot}HCl$ ($5.0{\times}10^{-4}\;M$). The quantitative analyses of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ion were performed by measuring the absorbance at 434 nm and 456 nm, respectively. The estimated mean values agreed well with the standard values within the range of 2.00~6.90%. The limit of detection was 27.9 ng/mL for Fe(II) and 55.8 ng/mL for Fe(III).
