  • We have been performing daily VLBI monitoring of the flux density of Sagittarius (Sgr) $A^{\ast}$ at 22 GHz from February 2013 to August 2014 using a sub-array of the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). The purpose of this monitoring is to explore the flux density variability at daily time resolution for a period longer than one year with the G2 cloud approaching. The flux density of Sgr $A^{\ast}$ is basically stable during the observational period, though there are some small variations. The average and scattering range are consistent with the previously observed values. We have observed no strong flare of Sgr $A^{\ast}$ although it is near the expected peri-center passing.

  • The optimal conditions for the production of branched dextrin from com starch (CSBD) using branching enzyme (BE) were established by investigating the degree of retrogradation of the gelatinized starch. The physicochemical properties of CSBD prepared using the established process were evaluated. It was found that physicochemical properties of com starch were greatly modified by BE treatment. CSBD had a higher dextrose-equivalent value and water solubility than the corresponding control. On the other hand, the viscosities in gelatinized solution and amylose contents of CSBD were lower than those of the control. A high-performance size-exclusion chromatography/multiangle laser light scattering/retractive index (HPSEC/MALLS/RI) system showed that the average molecular weight of CSBD was lower than that of the control. The pasting viscosities of CSBD were stable during the entire temperature cycle. In general, the BE treatment resulted in the retrogradation during storage being lower for CSBD than for the control.

  • A two-step recovery method was developed to produce copper powders from copper chloride waste solution as byproducts of MoO$_3$ leaching process. The first step consisted of replacing noble copper ions with external Fe$^{3+}$ ions which were formed by dissolving iron scraps in the copper chloride waste solution. The replaced copper ions were subsequently precipitated as copper powders. The second step was cementation of entire solution mixture to separate (pure) copper powders from aqueous solution of iron chloride. Cementation process variables of temperature, time, and added amount of iron scraps were optimized by using design of experiment method and individual effects on yield and efficiency of copper powder recovery were investigated. Copper powders thus obtained from cementation process were further characterized using various analytical tools such as XRD, SEM-EDS and laser diffraction and scattering methods.Cementation process necessitated further purification of recovered copper powders and centrifugal separation method was employed, which successfully yielded copper powders of more than 99% purity and average 1$\sim$2$\mu$m in size.

  • Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy and partial least squares (PLS) regression were used to predict the amylose content of polished rice. Spectral reflectance data in a wavelength range of 1,000 to 2,500 nm were obtained with a commercial spectrophotometer for 60 different varieties of Korean rice. For a comparison of this spectroscopic method to a standard chemical analysis, the amylose contents of the tested rice samples were determined by the iodine-blue colorimetric method. The highest correlation for the rice amylose ($R^2=0.94$, standard error of prediction=0.20% amylose content) was obtained when using the FT-NIR spectrum data pre-treated with normalization, the first derivative, smoothing, and scattering correction.

  • When therapeutic irradiation is indicated for the orbital tumors, the greatest concern is the risk of radiation-induced cataract. Conjunctival lymphoma is one of the good examples. We would like to report the procedure of the lens shielding device(L.S.D) and the result of irradiated dose to the lens. L.S.D. consistes of two parts : load alloy to attenuate electron beam, and dental acryl which completely covers the lead alloy to avoid discomfort of cornea from contacting directly with cerrobend and side scattering by cerrobend. And for easy location and removal, side bars were made on each side. Radiation doses were meaured with TLD(TLD 3500 Hawshaw). Markus chamber in a polystyrene phantom. The phantom was irradiated with 9MeV electron beams from Clinac 2100C with $6{\times}6cm$ electron cone. The relative dose at 6mm depth where the lens is located was $4.2\%$ with TLD and $5.1\%$ with Markus chamber clinically when 2600 cGy are irradiated to the eyeball, the mapinary dose to the lens will be 109 cGy or 132 cGy, which will significently reduce the cataract.

  • Objectives In this study, we investigated the influence of ionic strength and natural organic matter (NOM) on aggregation and soil adsorption of citrate-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Methods Time-resolved dynamic light scattering measurements and batch adsorption experiments were used to study their aggregation and soil adsorption behaviors, respectively. Results The aggregation rate of AgNPs increased with increasing ionic strength and decreasing NOM concentration. At higher ionic strength, the AgNPs were unstable, and thus tended to be adsorbed to the soil, while increased NOM concentration hindered soil adsorption. To understand the varying behaviors of AgNPs depending on the environmental factors, particle zeta potentials were also measured as a function of ionic strength and NOM concentration. The magnitude of particle zeta potential became more negative with decreasing ionic strength and increasing NOM concentration. These results imply that the aggregation and soil adsorption behavior of AgNPs were mainly controlled by electrical double-layer repulsion consistent with the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. Conclusions This study found that the aggregation and soil adsorption behavior of AgNPs are closely associated with environmental factors such as ionic strength and NOM and suggested that assessing the environmental fate and transport of nanoparticles requires a thorough understanding of particle-particle interaction mechanisms.

  • In order to assimilate MHS satellite data into the convective scale model at KMA, ATOVS data are reprocessed to utilize the original high-resolution data. And then to improve the preprocessing experiments for cloud detection were performed and optimized to convective-scale model. The experiment which is land scattering index technique added to Observational Processing System to remove contaminated data showed the best result. The analysis fields with assimilation of MHS are verified against with ECMWF analysis fields and fit to other observations including Sonde, which shows improved results on relative humidity fields at sensitive level (850-300 hPa). As the relative humidity of upper troposphere increases, the bias and RMSE of geopotential height are decreased. This improved initial field has a very positive effect on the forecast performance of the model. According to improvement of model field, the Equitable Threat Score (ETS) of precipitation prediction of $1{\sim}20mm\;hr^{-1}$ was increased and this impact was maintained for 27 hours during experiment periods.

  • We designed and fabricated dichroic filters for high-power fiber lasers to protect the pumping laser diode from counterpropagating laser beams. The transmittance at laser diode wavelengths of 905 nm~925 nm was designed to be less than 0.1% and the transmittance at the fiber laser or Brillouin scattering wavelengths of 1020 nm ~ 1100 nm was designed to be more than 99.9%. Since oxide materials have good adhesion to the $SiO_2$ substrate, $SiO_2/Ta_2O_5$ were used as coating materials. The filter was fabricated according to our optimized design and its characteristics were compared with the theoretical design. As a result, the transmittance at laser diode wavelengths of 905 nm~925 nm was measured to be less than 0.1%, and the transmittance at the fiber laser or Brillouin scattering wavelengths of 1020 nm~1100 nm was measured to be more than 95.5%, which coincided well with the theoretical design considering processing errors. The filter was found to operate well over 1W of input laser power.
