Atom-thick graphene membrane and nano-sized graphene objects (NGOs) hold substantial potential for applications in future molecular-scale integrated electronics, transparent conducting membranes, nanocomposites, etc. To realize this potential, chemical properties of graphene need to be understood and diagnostic methods for various NGOs are also required. To meet these needs, chemical properties of graphene and optical diagnostics of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been explored by Raman spectroscopy, AFM and STM scanning probes. The first part of the talk will illustrate the role of underlying silicon dioxide substrates and ambient gases in the ubiquitous hole doping of graphene. An STM study reveals that thermal annealing generates out-of-plane deformation of nanometer-scale wavelength and distortion in $sp^2$ bonding on an atomic scale. Graphene deformed by annealing is found to be chemically active enough to bind molecular oxygen, which leads to a strong hole-doping. The talk will also introduce Raman spectroscopy studies of GNRs which are known to have nonzero electronic bandgap due to confinement effect. GNRs of width ranging from 15 nm to 100 nm have been prepared by e-beam lithographic patterning of mechanically exfoliated graphene followed by oxygen plasma etching. Raman spectra of narrow GNRs can be characterized by upshifted G band and strong disorder-related D band originating from scattering at ribbon edges. Detailed analysis of the G, D, and 2D bands of GNRs proves that Raman spectroscopy is still a reliable tool in characterizing GNRs despite their nanometer width.

The graphic simulator has been used to analyze the problems that can occur during transporting and handling radioactive materials, and to derive necessary devices that can transport and handle spent fuel powder without scattering in a hot cell. The graphic simulator has advantages over the real scale physical mockup with respect to cost and schedule. The process equipment and maintenance devices can be verified in advance with less cost and reduced schedule. The derived results are being reflected in the design of equipment for demonstration and are being verified during demonstration.
Since early 90's, the solar X-ray telescopes such as Yohkoh SXT and Hinode XRT have observed coronal magnetic structures on the Sun's surface in the range of about $40'{\times}40'$ field-of-view (FOV) covering the full solar disk. Thus it has been stressed by the scientists that the optical structure of solar telescopes should be designed with care for improving the uniformity over a wide FOV. There would be, however, no unique solution in designing the optical system of a telescope for overcoming perfectly the problem of off-axis response variation. As a consequence, the correction of optical imperfectness of telescopes has become an important calibration step that should be performed beforehand when the observed images are to be used for photometric purposes. In particular, a special care should be taken when performing the temperature analysis with thin and thick filters for flaring activities observed at the periphery of the full FOV. From the analyses of both pre-launch calibration and in-flight observation data, the optical characteristics for describing the performance of solar X-ray telescopes, especially in view of their energy dependence, will be introduced and discussed in our presentation.
In this paper, the behavior of electron swarm parameters and energy distribution function of the discharge under high E/N condition in e$^{-10}$ -CF$_{4}$ gas have been analysed over the E/N range from 1-300(Td) by the MCS and BEq methods using set of electron collision cross section determined by the authors. The swarm parameters and energy distribution function have been calculated for the pulsed Townsend, steady-state Townsend and Time of Flight methods. The results gained that the value of electron swarm parameters such as the electron drift velocity, the electron ionization and attachment coefficients and longitudinal diffusion coefficients in agreement with the experimental and theoretical data for a range of E/N. The electron energy distribution function has been explained and analysed in e$^{-10}$ -CF$_{4}$ at E/N : 5, 10, 100, 200, 300(Td) for a case of the equilibrium region in the mean electron energy and respective set of electron collision cross sections. The validity of the results has been confirmed by TOF and SST methods.

This paper describes the information for quantitative simulation of weakly ionized plasma. We must grasp the meaning of the plasma state condition to utilize engineering application and to understand materials of plasma state. In this paper, the drift velocity of electron in Xenon gas calculated for range of E/N values from 0.01~500[Td] at the temperature is $300[^{\circ}K]$ and pressure is 1[Torr], using a set of electron collision cross sections determined by the authors and the values of drift velocity of electrons are obtained for TOF, PT, SST sampling method of Backward Prolongation by two term approximation Boltzmann equation method. it has also been used to predict swarm parameter using the values of cross section as input. The result of Boltzmann equation, the drift velocity of electrons, has been compared with experimental data by L. S. Frost and A. V. Phelps for a range of E/N. The swarm parameter from the study are expected to server as a critical test of current theories of low energy scattering by atoms and molecules.

Satellite contamination from back-scattered molecules has long been analyzed using the BGK theory or the DSMC technique which are rather inefficient in that they are complicated or take a long time in the analysis. This study presents a new technique of estimating the back-scattering contamination, which is very simple and easy to use like the view factor method and also very accurate. This method, called the modified view factor method, is equivalent to the DSMC in so far as the molecular thermal velocity is much smaller than the satellite velocity and the mean free path much longer than the satellite.
Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.
Focusing geometry dependence of output Stokes energy in single pass methane Raman shifter is investigated. The experimental result shows that the threshold energy decreases as confocal parameter increases. This result can be explained by gain suppression caused by Stokes - anti-Stokes coupling. In this paper, we give simple analysis for the focusing geometry dependence of Stokes - anti-Stokes coupling and present the criterion of confocal parameter to reduce the gain suppression. Focusing geometry dependence of stimulated Brillouin scattering is measured and the result is in good agreement with theoretical prediction.
The effect of bonding misfit on single crystallization of transient liquid phase (TLP) bonded joints of single crystal superalloy CMSX-2 was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. The bonding misfit was defined by (100) twist angle (rotating angle) at bonded interface. TLP bonding of specimens was carried out at 1523K for 1.8ks in vacuum. The post-bond heat treatment consisted of the solution and sequential two step aging treatment was conducted in the Ar atmosphere. The crystallographic orientation analysis across the TLP bonded joints was conducted three dimensionally using the electron back scattering pattern (EBSP) method. EBSP analyses f3r the bonded and post bonded heat treated specimens were conducted. All bonded joints had misorientation centering around the bonded interface for as-bonded and post-bond heat treated specimens with rotating angle. The average misorientation angle between both solid phases in bonded interlayer was almost identical to the rotating angle at bonded interface. HRTEM observation revealed that the atom arrangement of both solid phases in bonded interlayer was quite different across the bonded interface. It followed that grain boundary was formed in bonded interface. It was confirmed that epitaxial growth of the solid phase occurred from the base metal substrates during TLP bonding and single crystallization could not be achieved in joints with rotating angle.
We present the results of analysis on the X-ray observations of the binary X-ray pulsar Her X-I. made with ASCA/SIS on August 13-14. 1993. An eclipse transition from ingress to egress was fully covered by the observations. The main findings are as follows; (1) a model of power-law plus black-body is required to interpret the entire eclipse spectrum. and the black-body component appears at < 0.7 keV. (2) the power-law continuum which has photon index ${\alpha}\;=\;{0.84^{\;+0.14}}_{\;-0.19}$ is very similar to that of detected by Ginga/LAC (${\alpha}\;=\;0.80\;{\pm}\;0.04$), (3) the calculated eclipse flux of $2^{-10}\;keV.{\;}~{\;}1.8{\pm}10^{-11}{\;}ergs{\;}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$, is consistent with the Ginga observation carried out in the high intensity state ~2.0{\pm}10^{-11}{\;}ergs{\;}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$, (4) there is no significant absorption feature. and an upper limit of the aborption column $NH{\;}\leq{\;}3{\pm}10^{20}\;cm^{-2}$ is determined at the 90% confidence limit. Based on these results, we suggest that extended matter surrounding the binary system should be existed persistently with stable conditions, and scattering of the source continuum by the matter is responsible for the eclipse emission.ission.
