We investigated the surface structure and wetting behavior of octaneselenolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) formed in a 50 ${\mu}M$ ethanol solution according to immersion time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and an automatic contact angle (CA) goniometer. Closely-packed, well-ordered alkanethiol SAMs would form as the immersion time increased; unexpectedly, however, we observed the structural transition of octaneselenolate SAMs from a molecular row phase with a long-range order to a disordered phase with a high density of vacancy islands (VIs). Molecularly resolved STM imaging revealed that the missing-row ordered phase of the SAMs could be assigned as a $(6{\times}{\surd}3)R30^{\circ}$ superlattice containing three molecules in the rectangular unit cell. In addition, CA measurements showed that the structural order and defect density of VIs are closely related to the wetting behaviors of octaneselenolate SAMs on gold. In this study, we clearly demonstrate that interactions between the headgroups and gold surfaces play an important role in determining the physical properties and surface structure of SAMs.

Orderings and electronic structures of organic molecules on metal substrates have been studied due to possible applications in electronic devices. In molecular systems, delocalized pi-electrons play important roles in the adsorption behaviors and electronic structures. We studied the adsorption and electronic structures of Co-Porphyrin molecules on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) at low temperature. Molecules form closely packed two-dimensional islands on Au(111) surface with two different types, having different shape evolutions in our energy-dependent STM observations. The Kondo resonance state, occurred by spin exchange interaction between the Co center atom and conduction electrons in the metal substrate, was observed in one type, while it was absent in the other type in scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. Possible origins of two molecular shapes will be discussed.

The electrical properties of viologen ($VC_8SH$) were studied in terms of the tunneling current characteristics using self-assembling techniques and ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-STM). We fabricated the Au substrate were deposited by thermal evaporation system($420^{\circ}C$). Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on Au(111), which had been thermally deposited onto freshly cleaved, heated mica. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM/L solution of Octanethiol in ethanol for 24 h to form a monolayer. After through rinsing the sample, it was exposed to a 0.1 mM/L solution of $VC_8SH$ in ethanol for 30 min. We measurement of the morphology on the single viologen molecule. The current-voltage (I-V) properties were measured at arbitary configured points on the surface of the sample by using a STS.
The formation of striped phases of unsymmetric hexyl octadecyl disulfide ($CH_3(CH_2)_5SS(CH_2)_{17}CH_3$, HOD) and 1-hydroxyundecyl octadecyl disulfide ($CH_3(CH_2)_{17}SS(CH_2)_{11}$OH, HUOD) on Au(111) and graphite has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to understand the self-assembly processes of dialkyl disulfides. STM imaging clearly shows the formation of striped phases having corrugation periodicities that are nearly consistent with the molecular length of alkanethiolate moieties formed after the S-S bond cleavage of dialkyl disulfide on a gold surface. On the other hand, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of dialkyl disulfides on a graphite surface displayed long-range, well-ordered monolayers with one striped pattern that shows periodicity as a function of molecular length via nondissociative adsorption. From a nonoscopic viewpoint, we have clearly demonstrated that dialkyl disulfide SAMs on gold form via S-S bond cleavage of disulfide.

Crystallization has become the most popular technique for the separation of enantiomers since the Pasteur's discovery. To investigate mechanism of crystallization of chiral molecules, it is necessary to study self-assembled structures on two-dimensional surface. Here, we have studied two-dimensional self-assembled structures of an unnatural amino acid, (S)-${\beta}$-methyl naphthalen-1-${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine) on Au(111) surface at 150 K using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At initial stage, we found two chiral honeycomb structures which are counter-clockwise and clockwise configurations in one domain. The molecules are arranged around molecular vacancies, dark hole. By further increasing the amounts of adsorbed ${\gamma}^2$-1-naphthylalanine, a well-ordered square packed structure was observed. In addition, we found the other structure that molecules were trapped in the pore of the hexagonal molecular assembly.
The geometrical and electronic structure of epitaxially grown Ge on Si(100) and Si(111) surfaces has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. Since Ge atoms could be distinguished from Si atoms by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and voltage dependent STM images, the growth mode of the added layer could be studied. On the (100) surface with a (2${\times}$1) reconstruction, Ge overlayer grow preferentially on the B type step edges at 720K. On the (111) surface, Ge overlayer also grow on the step edges with (7${\times}$7) and (5${\times}$5) structure depending on their coverage and annealing temperature.
The surface structure and electrochemical behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by aromatic thiols on Au(111) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and cyclic voltammetry. Benzenethiol (BT) forms disordered phases on Au(111) which are composed of many bright domains, while benzyl mercaptan (BM), with a methylene unit between the aromatic group and sulfur atom, forms twodimensional ordered SAMs on Au(111). In addition, two phase-separated domains consisting of disordered and ordered phases were observed in binary SAMs formed from a 1 : 1 mixed ethanol solution of BT and BM. From STM and CV measurements, we found that the blocking efficiency of aromatic thiol SAMs coated on an Au(111) electrode for an electron transfer reaction decreases as the structural order of the SAMs increases. Molecular-scale STM and CV results obtained here will be very useful in designing functional SAMs for further applications, such as the improvement of corrosion passivation of Au(111) on an aromatic thiolmodified Au(111) surface.
Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) such as Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and Atomic Force Microscope (AEM) was shown to be the powerful tool for nano-scale characterization of material surfaces. Using this technique, surface morphology of the cyclically deformed Cu or Cu-Al single crystal was observed. The surface became proportionately rough as the number of cycles increased, but after some number of cycles no further change was observed. Slip steps with the heights of 100 to 200 nm and the widths of 1000 to 2000 nm were prevailing at the stage. The slipped distance of one slip system at the surface was not uniform, and formation of the extrusions or intrusions was assumed to occur such place. By comparing the morphological change caused by crystallographic orientation, strain amplitude, number of cycles or stacking fault energy, some interesting results which help to clarify the basic mechanism of fatigue damage were obtained. Furthermore, applicability of the scanning tunneling microscopy to fatigue damage is discussed.

We investigated the electrical properties of self-assembled (4,4'-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-thioacetylbenzene), which has been well known as a conducting molecule having possible application to molecular level negative differential resistance(NDR)[1]. Generally, the phenomenon of NDR can be characterized by the decreasing current with the increasing voltage[2]. To deposit the SAM layer onto gold electrode, we transfer the prefabricated nanopores into a 1mM self-assembly molecules in THF solution. Au(111) substrates were prepared by ion beam sputtering method of gold onto the silicon wafer. As a result, we measured the voltage-current properties and confirmed the negative differential resistance properties of self-assembled organic thin film and measured, using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM).
