For scale and rotation invariant pattern recognition of images with noise, an optical wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is proposed. Wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is synthesized by each single CHF extracted from scale-changed and wavelet transformed images for a referene image as training images. The proposed optical wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is the type of the matched filter so that it can use the structure of 4f optical correlation system. The results of computer simulation show that the proposed filter has the rotation and scale-invariant correlation output and it is useful in the noisy input.

A correspondence matching is one of the important tasks in computer vision, and it is not easy to find corresponding points in variable environment where a scale, rotation, view point and illumination are changed. A SURF(Speeded Up Robust Features) algorithm have been widely used to solve the problem of the correspondence matching because it is faster than SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) with closely maintaining the matching performance. However, because SURF considers only gray image and local geometric information, it is difficult to match corresponding points on the image where similar local patterns are scattered. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an extended SURF algorithm that uses the invariant color and global geometric information. The proposed algorithm can improves the matching performance since the color information and global geometric information is used to discriminate similar patterns. In this paper, the superiority of the proposed algorithm is proved by experiments that it is compared with conventional methods on the image where an illumination and a view point are changed and similar patterns exist.
A direct authentication from gray-scale image, instead of the conventional multi-step preprocessing, is proposed using Gabor filter-based features from the gray-scale fingerprint around core point. The core point is located as a reference point for the translation invariant matching. And its principal symmetry axis is detected for the rotation invariant matching from its neighboring region centered at the core point. And then fingerprint is divided into non-overlapping blocks with respect to the core point and features are directly extracted form the blocked gray level fingerprint using Gabor filter. The proposed fingerprint authentication is based on the Euclidean distance between the corresponding Gabor features of the input and the template fingerprints. Experiments are conducted on 300${\times}$300 fingerprints obtained from a CMOS sensor with 500 dpi resolution, and the proposed method could lower the False Reject Rate(FRR) to 18.2% under False Acceptance Rate(FAR) of 0%.
Face recognition under controlled settings, such as limited viewpoint and illumination change, can achieve good performance nowadays. However, real world application for face recognition is still challenging. In this paper, we propose using the combination of Affine Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Probabilistic Similarity for face recognition under a large viewpoint change. Affine SIFT is an extension of SIFT algorithm to detect affine invariant local descriptors. Affine SIFT generates a series of different viewpoints using affine transformation. In this way, it allows for a viewpoint difference between the gallery face and probe face. However, the human face is not planar as it contains significant 3D depth. Affine SIFT does not work well for significant change in pose. To complement this, we combined it with probabilistic similarity, which gets the log likelihood between the probe and gallery face based on sum of squared difference (SSD) distribution in an offline learning process. Our experiment results show that our framework achieves impressive better recognition accuracy than other algorithms compared on the FERET database.

The degree of relative similarity between 2D patterns is obtained using Open-Ball Scheme. Open-Ball Scheme employs a method of transforming the geometrical information on 3D objects or 2D patterns into the features to measure the relative similarity for object(patten) recognition, with invariance on scale, rotation, and translation. The feature of an object is used to obtain the relative similarity and mapped into [0, 1] the interval of real line. For decades, Moment-Invariant Method has been used as one of the excellent methods for pattern classification and object recognition. Open-Ball Scheme uses the geometrical structure of patterns while Moment Invariant Method uses the statistical characteristics. Open-Ball Scheme is compared to Moment Invariant Method with respect to the way that it interprets two-dimensional patten classification, especially the paradigms are compared by the degree of closeness to human's intuitive understanding. Finally the effectiveness of the proposed Open-Ball Scheme is illustrated through simulations.
In this paper, we propose an effective method for recognizing daily human activities from a stream of three dimensional body poses, which can be obtained by using Kinect-like RGB-D sensors. The body pose data provided by Kinect SDK or OpenNI may suffer from both the view variance problem and the scale variance problem, since they are represented in the 3D Cartesian coordinate system, the origin of which is located on the center of Kinect. In order to resolve the problem and get the view-invariant and scale-invariant features, we transform the pose data into the spherical coordinate system of which the origin is placed on the center of the subject's hip, and then perform on them the scale normalization using the length of the subject's arm. In order to represent effectively complex internal structures of high-level daily activities, we utilize Hidden state Conditional Random Field (HCRF), which is one of probabilistic graphical models. Through various experiments using two different datasets, KAD-70 and CAD-60, we showed the high performance of our method and the implementation system.

Scale-invariant feature is an effective method for retrieving and classifying images. In this study, we analyze a scale-invariant planar curve features for developing 2D shapes. Scale-space filtering is used to determine contour structures on different scales. However, it is difficult to track significant points on different scales. In mathematics, curvature is considered to be fundamental feature of a planar curve. However, the curvature of a digitized planar curve depends on a scale. Therefore, automatic scale detection for curvature analysis is required for practical use. We propose a technique for achieving automatic scale detection based on difference of curvature. Once the curvature values are normalized with regard to the scale, we can calculate difference in the curvature values for different scales. Further, an appropriate scale and its position are detected simultaneously, thereby avoiding tracking problem. Appropriate scales and their positions can be detected with high accuracy. An advantage of the proposed method is that the detected significant points do not need to be located in the same contour. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experimental results.

In this paper, we propose a new affine shape adaptation scheme for the affine invariant feature detector, in which the convergence stability is still an opening problem. This paper examines the relation between the integration scale matrix of next iteration and the current second moment matrix and finds that the convergence stability of the method can be improved by adjusting the relation between the two matrices instead of keeping them always proportional as proposed by previous methods. By estimating and updating the shape of the integration kernel and differentiation kernel in each iteration based on the anisotropy of the current second moment matrix, we propose a coarse-to-fine affine shape adaptation scheme which is able to adjust the pace of convergence and enable the process to converge smoothly. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach obtains an improvement in convergence ratio and repeatability compared with the current schemes with relatively fixed integration kernel.
The most important factor of mobile robot is to build a map for surrounding environment and estimate its localization. This paper proposes a real-time localization and map building method through 3-D reconstruction using scale invariant feature from monocular camera. Mobile robot attached monocular camera looking wall extracts scale invariant features in each image using SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) as it follows wall. Matching is carried out by the extracted features and matching feature map that is transformed into absolute coordinates using 3-D reconstruction of point and geometrical analysis of surrounding environment build, and store it map database. After finished feature map building, the robot finds some points matched with previous feature map and find its pose by affine parameter in real time. Position error of the proposed method was maximum. 8cm and angle error was within $10^{\circ}$.

There are many research results about a self-localization technique of mobile robot. In this paper we present a self-localization technique based on the features of ceiling vision using a fisheye lens. The features obtained by SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) can be used to be matched between the previous image and the current image and then its optimal function is derived. The fisheye lens causes some distortion on its images naturally. So it must be calibrated by some algorithm. We here propose some methods for calibration of distorted images and design of a geometric fitness model. The proposed method is applied to laboratory and aile environment. We show its feasibility at some indoor environment.
