  • In this study, beauty food activities were determined for extracts of Saurus chinensis as functional beauty food. Tyrosinase inhibitory effect was increased as more 4 folds by ultra-fine grind technology than normal grind technology in ethanol extracts from Saurus chinensis. A ultra-fine ground technology was used to increase the extraction yield for bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity, which is related to skin-whitening, was confirmed to be 100% for ethanol extracts at 1,000 ppm of phenolics. Anti-wrinkle activity was determined showing 30% of inhibition effect at above 1,000 ppm phenolic concentration. The elastase inhibitory activity of water and ethanol extracts from ultra-fine ground Saurus chinensis showed higher inhibition activity than compared to extracts from normal ground Saurus chinensis. Astringent activity in ethanol extracts was determined showing over 70% at 250 ppm of phenolics. Based on these results, Saurus chinensis extracts can be used as a functional beauty food and cosmetic with whitening, anti-wrinkle and pore contraction effects.

  • This study was performed to determine antioxidative activity of solvent extracts from medicinal plant. As the result, methanol extract from Saurus chinensis Bail and Glycine soya exhibited superior free radical activity as well as reducing power. In particular, methanol extract from Saurus chinensis Bail showed high free radical activity with 130.08${\mu}g/mL$ as $IC_{50}$ value and strong reducing power at concentration of $400{\mu}g/mL$.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Eriobotrya japonica and Saurus chinensis extracts and their fermented extracts on immune parameters in BALB/c mice treated with 1% 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The groups were Eriobotrya japonica extract (BI), Saurus chinensis extract (SA), mixture with E. japonica extract and S. chinensis extract (FB) and fermented mixture with E. japonica extract and S. chinensis extract (FA) and distilled water treated control. The level of serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E was decreased in FA compared to control group, but significant difference was not observed (p<0.05). The histamine and contents in FA and control group were $1.47{\pm}0.20$ ng/mL and $1.90{\pm}0.04$ ng/mL, respectively (p<0.05). Ceramide contents were significantly increased in FA compared to BI, SA, FB and control group (p<0.05). These results suggest that FA supplementation in the DNCB treated BALB/c mice affect anti-allergic activities positively, and may be used as functional material for suppression of atopy dermatitis in food industry.

  • To search CDK4/Cyclin D1 enzyme inhibition materials, methanol extracts of native eighty seven plant species in thirty seven families were screened in vitro for their inhibiting activities against CDK4/Cyclin D1 enzyme which are control to the normal cell division cycle in human body. Extracts of Paeonia suffruticosa, Saurus chinensis, Sanguisorba officinalis and Celastrus orbiculatus among them significantly inhibited above fifty percent $(in\;5\;{\mu}g/ml)$ against CDK4/ Cyclin D1 enzyme. Especially, the extracts of P. suffruticosa and S. officinalis showed moderately strong inhibition. Also, cryptotanshinone was identified as active compound from a extracts of Salvia mitiorrhiza by spectroscopic analyses including 2D NMR experiments.

  • The purpose of this presents is to investigate, using natural food extracts(Green tea; Camellia sinesis, Du'chung; Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, Eu sung cho; Houttuynia cordate Thunb, Sam back cho; Saurus Chinensis, Baek hwa sa seal oho; Oldenladia diffusa Roxb., Laver; Porphyra tenera, Sea mustard; Undaria pinnatifda and Sea staghorn; Condium fragile) and juices(Sweet pepper; Capsicum annuum var. angulosum, Kale; Brassia oleracea var. acephala, Cucumber; Cucumis sativus, Onion; Allium cepa, Tomato; Lycopericon esculentum, Maesil; Prunus mume, Plum; Prunus salicina and Grape; Vitis spp.), the effect of natural plant components on the nitrite-scavenging under the different levels of pH. From the above mentioned extracts and juices, the content of vitamin C was detected, containing 65.1∼77.1 mg/100g, at the highest level in the Green tea, and followed by vegetables and fruits in order. The nitrite scavenging effect of teas, medicinal plants, and seaweed extracts, in the reaction system under the condition of pH 1.2, were 57.0∼100%, 50.0∼100%, and 18.0∼99.0%, respectively. Especially, the nitrite was scavenged to the level of 100%1 when 10 ml of kale and 5 ml of maesil Juice

  • Effects of antimicrobial herbs on growth of tactic acid bacteria were investigated to extend shelf-life of Dongchimi, kimchi made with radishes and spices. Marta rosemary, among eight foreign and domestic herbs, showed strongest antimicrobial activity against seven kinds of lactic acid bacteria. Spices such as spring onion, garlic, and ginger showed no antimicrobial activity against lactic acid bacteria. During fermentation of Dongchimi for 6 days at $35^{\circ}C$, addition of marta rosemary inhibited acid formation, maintaining optimal pH of 3.8-4.2 throughout fermentation period, while no inhibitory effect was observed from Sambaekho (Saurus chinensis), pepper mint, and stevia. Results show shelf-life of Dongchimi was extended by addition of marta rosemary, which controlled over-production of tactic acid by inhibiting bacterial growth.

  • The effect of natural foods, utilizing the extracts or juices of teas(Green tea; Camellia sinesis, Du'chung; Eucommia ulmoides Oliver), medicinal plants(Eu sung cho; Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Sam back cho; Saurus Chinensis, Baek hwa sa seal cho; Oldenladia diffusa Roxb.) seaweeds(Laver; Porphyra tenera, Sea mustard; Undaria pinnatifida, Sea staghorn; Condium fragile) and vegetables(Sweet pepper; Capsicum annuum var. angulosum, Kale; Brassia oleracea var.. acephala, Cucumber; Cucumis sativus, Onion; Allium cepa) and fruits(Tomato; Lycopericon esculentum, Maesil; Prunus mume, Plum; Prunus saticina and Grape; Vitis spp.)on the inhibition of N-Nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) formation was investigated from the various conditions. The inhibition effect was observed in vitro using the reaction fluids of pH 1.2, 4.2 and 6.0. From the teas and medicinal plants, there was a positive response of NDMA formation; however, From the seaweed extracts, there was a negative response of the inhibition effect of NDMA formation, and as the pH of reaction fluids and the amount of materials increase, the inhibition of NDMA formation was strengthened. The inhibition ratios by the level of pH are as follows: under pH 1.2 vegetable juice were 57.6∼99.7% and fruits were 35.9∼99.7%; under pH 4.2 vegetable juice were 55.0∼97.5% and fruits were 21.3∼96.8%. All of the materials observed has been proved and shown the inhibition effect of NDMA formation.
