  • Objectives This study was aimed to report a significant improvement of a CKD patient's constipation, diagnosed as 'Soyang type yin depletion pattern' based on Sasang constitutional medicine. Methods The patient had treatment with Sasang constitutional medicine. The treatment was executed three times everyday from January 6th to February 21st of 2023. Clinical improvement was evaluated with Bristol Stool Form Scale, the number of defecation per week, average stool weight per day, the degree of abdominal discomfort and abdomen x-ray. Results The symptoms of constipation, abdominal discomfort, appetite and delirium were improved. Conclusion After the treatment with Sasang constitutional medicine, constipation, abdominal discomfort, appetite, delirium and the general condition of the patient also had improved.

  • 1. Objectives : We analyzed the case reports published by the journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine, to study Sasang Constitution diagnosis and characteristic of clinical practice. 2. Methods : It has been examined 138 case reports of Sasang Constitution society published from 1994 to 2008. We analyzed. patient's number, publication year, distribution of Sasang Constitution, title's characteristics and bases of constitution diagnosis. 3. Results and conclusions : 1) In the analysis of patient's number, 1 case report was almost part of the case reports, and the case reports ware many published after 2001. 2) In the analysis distribution of Sasang Constitution, Soyangin was the most Sasang Constitution, and Tae-umin was the next one and Soeumin, Taeyangin followed them. 3) In the analysis of the journal's title, Sasang Constitution, disease and symptom of Sasang Constitution were more important than prescription recently. 4) In the analysis of the journal's purpose, unique disease and response of treatment were almost part of the case reports. 5) In the analysis of diagnosis bases, subjective bases were more important than objective bases and Sasang Constitutional drug response. therefore we should do researches in objective bases and drug response in the future.

  • Objectives : Through a comparative study between Sasang constitutional medicine and Syndrome identification and treatment medicine about the theory of diagnosis, the theory of herbal medicine, the theory of prescription, the theory of acupuncture and constitutional medicine to put forward a complementary perfect solution which has good clinical utility. Methods : We compared and sorted out the textbook of Korean Sasang constitutional medicine which named Sasang medicine, and also the textbook of Chinese TCM which was including Basic theory of TCM, Diagnostics of TCM, Science of Chinese materia medica, Pharmacology of traditional Chinese medical formulae, Science of acupuncture and moxibustion, Constitution of TCM, and also related papers. Results : (1) Through a comparative study between Sasang constitutional medicine and Syndrome identification and treatment medicine about diagnosis, herbal medicine, prescription and acupuncture, Sasang constitutional medicine is a medical system which gives priority to balance of organs, when Syndrome identification and treatment medicine is a medical system that gives priority to improve symptom. (2) The prescriptions of Sasang constitutional medicine are used for the treatment of basic pathogenesis in the chronic stage of the disease, which can recover vital qi, when Syndrome identification and treatment medicine are used for the treatment of stage pathogenesis in the acute stage of the disease, which can get rid of pathogenic factors. (3) There are two kind of complementary perfect solution between Sasang constitutional medicine and Syndrome identification and treatment medicine. One perfect complementary medicine is that Sasang constitutional medicine plays a major role when Syndrome identification and treatment medicine plays a supporting role. The other one is that Syndrome identification and treatment medicine plays a major role when Sasang constitutional medicine plays a supporting role. It determined by the usual symptoms and the symptoms now, vital qi and pathogenic factors, symptom and the root cause, acute stage and chronic stage, and the state of pathogenesis. Conclusion : A new perfect complementary medicine can be created which is based on the setting that Sasang constitutional medicine primarily treat the usual symptoms, vital qi, the root cause, chronic stage and basic pathogenesis when Syndrome identification and treatment medicine primarily treat the symptoms now, pathogenic factors, symptom, acute stage and stage pathogenesis.

  • Objectives The aim of this study was to review the current clinical Sasang constitutions studies by using genetics and to provide basic data for developing in a better direction of research. Methods Research articles on genetics of the clinical Sasang constitutions studies were extracted from six databases. The articles were classified were published year, published journals, and the types of studies. Subjects of research and experimental methods for the genetic research were summarized. Results A total of 43 selected research articles were published from 1996 to 2020 and more than half of them were published in Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Journal of Korean Oriental Medicine. There were three main types of researches. The three types of researches were for investigating a genetic indicator for classification of Sasang constitutional type, confirming a relationship between pathological gene and Sasang constitutional type, and checking a hereditary of Sasang constitutional type. But these studies did not yield clear results illustrating a relationship between Genetics and Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Discussion In this study, the necessity of the follow up studies to demonstrate a relationship between Genetics and Sasang Constitutional Medicine was confirmed.

  • Objectives This study was to investigate the Sasang Constitutional classification in storke inpatients by using QSCC II and to evaluate the relevance of the results and Donguisusebowon contents. Methods QSCC II was conducted to 73 Stroke patients who were admitted from April 2014 to August 2014 in Dongseo oriental hospital. And the results were analyzed by contents of Donguisusebowon. Results The number of Soyangin and Taeumin was the most common and Soeumin was the lowest. There was no Taeyangin. The number of Soyangin and Taeumin was the most common in cerebral infarction patients, and the number of Soyangin was the most common in intracerebral hemorrhage patients. The patients who had both cerebral infarction and intracerebral hemorrhage were all Taeumin. Conclusions The incidence of stroke was higher in Soyangin and Taeumin. This results were relevant with the Sasang Constitutional Temperament of Donguisusebowon.

  • Objectives The purpose of this case was to report significant improvement of abdominal pain, constipation and a slight improvement of tremor after treatment by Sasang Constitutional Medicine to the patient with Parkinson's disease. Methods The patient was diagnosed as Soyangin according to the result of Sasang constitutional diagnosis, and treated by Sasang constitutional medications and acupuncture. The progress was evaluated with the Global Assessment Scale (GAS).Results The abdominal pain was reduced from Numeric Rating Scale (NRS)9 to NRS1 and headache was reduced from NRS5 to NRS3. The tremor was reduced to GAS 10. Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) was reduced from 40 to 27. The difference of heat distribution between left and right side was reduced and the abdomen was more warmer on Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI).Conclusions Sasang constitutional medicine can be a solution for the non motor symptoms caused by Parkinson's disease.

  • The correlation between angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) polymorphisms and cerebral infarction (CI) has been controversial. Such controversy may be due to different classifications of cerebrovascular diseases and ethnic differences. I studied the correlation between ACE genotypes and CI patients by case-control study in the Korean population. I also classified CI patients and control group into four types according to Sasang constitutional medicine. Furthermore I investigated the correlation among ACE genotypes, CI and Sasang constitutions. The frequencies of D allele were 0.32 in subjects with CI and 0.40 in the control group without CI (X2=0.128, p=0.720). In patients with CI, the frequency of Taeumins, one of four Sasang constitutional types, was significantly higher than that in controls (X2=15.425, p<0.00l). I did not find any correlation between ACE polymorphism and CI in Koreans. However, there were significant differences in allele frequencies between Koreans and Europeans, while similarities were shown to those of Japanese and Chinese populations.
