1. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) with Positive And Negative Affection Schedule(PANAS) for emotionality and Body Mass Index (BMI) for body constituents. 2. Methods : The SPQ along with Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II, PANAS, BMI was measured with 232 College students. The correlation coefficient was measured with Pearson correlation between SPQ and PANAS, BMI. The SPQ, PANAS, and BMI score of each Sasang constitution groups based on QSCCII were compared using analysis of variance and profile analysis. 3. Results : The SPQ score of each Sasang constitution groups was significantly (p<0.01) different. The SPQ showed significant correlation with PANAS Positive Affect (r=0.201, p=0.002), but not with the BMI (r=0.097, p=0.146). The SPQ-Emotionality scale, unlike other SPQ subscales, showed positive correlation with PANAS Negative Affection. 4. Conclusions : We performed the constructive validity of SPQ using PANAS and BMI. The SPQ would be useful for the study on psychophysiological mechanism of the Sasang constitutions.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to validate the Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ), based on the diagnosis of Sasang constitutional medicine clinical specialist. Methods : We performed Sasang type differentiation of 103 college students by certified specialist, and analyzed biopsychological traits of each groups with SPQ, Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Positive and Negative Affection Schedule (PANAS) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Results : The SPQ score of So-Yang ($33.1{\pm}0.79$), Tae-Eum ($29.03{\pm}0.67$) and So-Eum ($25.76{\pm}0.98$) Sasang groups showed significant differences from each other. The SPQ showed significant correlation with TCI Novelty-Seeking (r=.346), TCI Harm-Avoidance (r=-.348) and TCI Persistence (r=.346). But the BMI and PANAS did not show significant correlation with SPQ, although the PANAS Positive Affection (r=.332) has significant correlation with SPQ-Behavior. Conclusions : We confirmed the clinical validity of SPQ with clinical specialist and established biopsychosocial instruments. This study would contribute to a more objective diagnosis and studies on biopsychosocial mechanism of Sasang constitutional medicine.

Sasang Digestive Function Inventory (SDFI) and Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) were developed on the basis of clinical experiences of Korean medicine hospital and previous studies have used these for analyzing Sasang constitutional characteristics mainly in hospital level. The purpose of this study is to analyze Sasang constitutional characteristics using SDFI and SPQ in clinical level. The SPQ, SDFI, height and weight were measured with 79 patients over 18-years-old from Jan. 2015 to Apr. 2016 in the clinic, Daegu, Korea that specializes in tinnitus and performs Sasang constitution diagnosis. We used ANOVA in analyzing the differences of the scores of SPQ, SDFI, BMI and PI in each Sasang types (Tae-Yang, So-Yang, Tae-Eum), and Bonferroni test or Dunnett's T3 for post verification. The SDFI-T(F=3.215) and SDFI-D(F=4.347) scores were significantly different(p<0.05) and SPQ score was not different in each Sasang types(p>0.05). And Weight(F=4.294), BMI(F=12.386) and PI(F=14.490) were significantly different in each Sasang types(p<0.001). We found that SDFI(SDFI-D) and BMI PI can explain the Sasang constitutional characteristics, that is equivalent to previous studies and might be used for clinical index in making objective questionnaire for Sasnag constitutional diagnosis in clinical level.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to validate the biopsychological structure of Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) measuring Yin-Yang temperament with Junior version of Temperament and Character Inventory (JTCI) for temperament and Body Mass Index (BMI) and Pondera Index (PI) for physical constitution in elementary school students. Methods 903 Korean elementary school students (430 boys and 473 girls) completed SPQ, JTCI, and height and weight measures. Then they were analyzed by their genders and age groups. The correlation between SPQ and JTCI subscales were examined. The differences found in the SPQ and JTCI subscales, BMI and PI among high (30%), middle (40%), and low (30%) SPQ groups were investigated by analysis of variance. The profile analysis was also performed to compare JTCI subscale profiles of three SPQ total score groups. Results The SPQ score was significantly (p<0.001), and positively correlated with the JTCI Novelty-Seeking and negatively with the JTCI Harm-Avoidance. The JTCI Novelty-Seeking score of high SPQ group was significantly (p<0.001) higher than that of low SPQ group, and the JTCI Harm-Avoidance score of low SPQ group was significantly higher than that of high SPQ group. The JTCI subscale profiles for three SPQ groups were significantly (p<0.001) different for boys and girls. Significant correlations between BMI and SPQ were not found. PI and BMI of high and low SPQ groups were not significantly different. Conclusions The SPQ was shown to have robust biopsychological structure in elementary school students. It would be useful clinical measures for Sasang typology in pediatric patients.

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between general health condition and biopsychological traits of Sasang typology which determines the disease susceptibility and treatment responses. We had Korean Constitutional Multicenter Bank (KCMB) listed 1156 participants for measuring Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and Body Mass Index (BMI) for biopsychological traits of each Sasang types as well as Short Form 12 (SF12) for general health status. All the analysis was performed with consideration of gender and age. We analyzed the differences in general health status between Sasang types and the correlation between general health status and biopsychological traits of Sasang typology. We also analyzed how much the selected SF12 subscales can be explained with biopsychosocial characteristics. There were no generaliszable differences among Sasang type groups in SF12, no significant correlation between biopsychological traits and SF12 Physical and Mental Component Summary. We found that there were significant correlations between SPQ-Behavior subscale and SF12 Vitality, and the regression model with SPQ-Behavior, SPQ-Emotionality, age and sex can predict 15.4% of the total variances in SF12 Vitality. We discussed the possibility that the Sasang typology is not a determinant of general health status but a moderator for the susceptibility and response. This study would contribute to the development of Sasang type-specific life nurturing program focusing on the psychological perspectives.
Introduction Cloninger's Novelty-Seeking (NS) and Harm-Avoidance (HA) were found to be the biopsychological characteristic of Sasang typology, and the So-Yang type has high NS and low HA however the So-Eum type as contrary. The purpose of this study was to show the clinical usefulness of these measures as objective clinical index of Sasang typology in foreign countries lacking validated measures. Methods The Sasang type of 103 university students was diagnosed using Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II and clinical specialist, and biopsychological and physical features with NS, HA, Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and BMI. These measures were normalized to make a noble index of 'NS(100-HA)', and the correlation among these were examined with Pearson's correlation. The differences of biopsychological and physical features between Sasang type groups were attested with ANCOVA, and the comparison of clinical usefulness of SPQ and NS(100-HA) were examined with discriminant analysis. Results SPQ and BMI were clinically useful for Sasang typology as shown in previous studies, and the substitution of SPQ with normalized NS(100-HA) was found acceptable. The NS(100-HA) is significantly correlated with SPQ (r=0.466, p<0.01), however not with BMI (r=0.079, ns). The SPQ and NS(100-HA) scores were found to be distinctive between Sasang type groups, and these were found to predict Sasang type of participants with similar correctness. Discussion and Conclusion The current study reviewed the theoretical backgrounds and confirmed the clinical usefulness of Cloninger's biopsychological theory in Sasang typology. These might provide foundations for integrative medicine and cross-cultural biopsychology of the East and West.

Introduction The previous study showed that the psychological Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and physical Body Mass Index (BMI) were clinically useful for predicting Sasang types diagnosed with certified clinical specialist and QSCCII. The purpose of current study was to examine its clinical usefulness using large sized clinical sample. Methods The age, sex, height, weight, circumference of waist and hip, Sasang Personality Questionnaire (SPQ), and Sasang type of 2,049 participants listed on the Korean Medicine Data Center were acquired. The anthropometrics of BMI, Ponderal Index (PI), Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR), and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) were calculated. The discriminant analysis using SPQ subscales, BMI, age and sex were performed to predict Sasang types. And, the ANCOVA with age and sex as covariate was also used to examine differences among diagnosed and predicted Sasang type groups in biopsychological features. Results The discriminant analysis showed 82.0% of percentage correctly predicted. And, the biopsychological characteristics of predicted Sasang type groups were significantly similar to those of diagnosed Sasang type groups. In both predicted and diagnosed Sasang type groups, the anthropometric measures were in increasing order of So-Eum, So-Yang, and Tae-Eum types, and the psychological measures were in increasing order of So-Eum, Tae-Eum, and So-Yang types as shown in previous studies. Discussion and Conclusion The well validated biopsychological variables of SPQ and BMI showed theoretical and clinical usefulness, and were found to be useful for diagnosing Sasang types in clinical setting. The current study might be useful for the East-West integrative medicine and evidence-based teaching.
Objectives The aim was to develop a method for detecting Sasang constitution based on the ratio of facial landmarks and provide an objective and reliable tool for Sasang constitution classification. Methods Facial images, KS-15 scores, and certainty scores were collected from subjects identified by Korean Medicine Data Center. Facial ratio landmarks were detected, yielding 2279 facial ratio features. Tree-based models were trained to classify Sasang constitution, and Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) analysis was employed to identify important facial features. Additionally, Body Mass Index (BMI) and personality questionnaire were incorporated as supplementary information to enhance model performance. Results Using the Tree-based models, the accuracy for classifying Taeeum, Soeum, and Soyang constitutions was 81.90%, 90.49%, and 81.90% respectively. SHAP analysis revealed important facial features, while the inclusion of BMI and personality questionnaire improved model performance. This demonstrates that facial ratio-based Sasang constitution analysis yields effective and accurate classification results. Conclusions Facial ratio-based Sasang constitution analysis provides rapid and objective results compared to traditional methods. This approach holds promise for enhancing personalized medicine in Korean traditional medicine.
