A solution method is developed for computing the bed shear stress driven by combined wave and current flow on a natural mobile coastal beach. An empirical equation is introduced to determine the shape of ripples formed on the natural sandy beach. The model being based on the Prandtl's mixing length theory, the effect of arbitrarily-angled interaction is included in the estimation of current velocity reduction and all numerical integrations are expressed by explicit approximate equations to improve the computation speed. In addition the computed sediment transport rates were compared with the measured values reported in literature. using the refined bottom friction model considering the ripple formation.
Nearly 300 bottom sediments and 20 box-cores were sampled from the Asan bay. The central portion of the Asan bay is covered by sand, slightly gravelly sand and gravelly muddy sand. Between the central and marginal zones gravelly mud and slightly gravelly sandy mud are characteristically distributed. The gravel population in the sediments seems to be originated from the rocky bottom on the area near the bay because the gravel is angular and composed of the schist and gneiss. The quartz/feldspar ratio is about 3/2. It is considered to be that the amount of feldspar in this bay is much higher than that of any other areas in the Yellow Sea. This is considerd to be comparatively short distance of transport ion of these sediment from the provenance.
Over 40 bottom sediment samples were collected from the southern sea of Korea. The detailed textural characteristic of the sediments, percent calcium carbonate and heavy and light mineralogy were determined. Seaward of these sediments is a nearly broad belt of sandy sediments. In a broad outline it is considered to constitute a near-shore deposits left from a Pleistocene time of eustatically lowered level of sea water, because the sediments on the outer half of the continental shelf are much coarser than that nearer shore. The carbonate content increases strongly to the southeast and northwest of Cheju Island. It is believed that the high calcium carbonate content can be largely attributed to the availability of carbonate materials.
A distributed watershed model CAMEL(Chemicals, Agricultural Management and Erosion Losses) was applied to a part of grazing grassland and vegetation buffer strip(VBS) located in Daegwanryeong, Korea. A set of scenario analyses was carried out for grassland and VBS with various combinations of VBS widths, soil textures and ground surface slopes. The simulation results indicate that annual direct runoff decreases with wider VBS and the removal efficiency of pollutants generally decrease with steeper slopes. The removal efficiency of sediment is not significantly different with VBS widths. For gentle and medium slopes($10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$), the removal efficiency of TOC and TN is not significantly different with VBS widths. As for a steep slope($30^{\circ}$), however, the removal efficiency of TOC and TN increases with narrower VBS. The removal efficiency of TP is generally high except for medium and steep slope of sandy loam where the removal efficiency of TP increases with wider VBS. This result of TP is contrary to the results of TOC and TN due to the adsorption characteristics of phosphorus associated with fine sediment particles. It is expected that CAMEL can be used for evaluating the effectiveness of VBS to reduce non-point source pollution discharges.
In order to understand the sedimentary environment of the southern intertidal zone of Shihwa Lake, west coast of Gyeonggi-do, 10 surface and 2 core sediment samples were analysed for grain size, water content, AVS (Acid Volatile Sulfide), TOC (Total Organic Carbon), concentrations of metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Cr). The surface sediments are generally poorly sorted (0.60~2.31 ${\phi}$) sandy Silt, slightly gravelly muddy Sand, silty Sand, Sand with mean grain size of 2.95 to 6.00 ${\phi}$. The sediments contain Al (1.54%), Fe (1.75%), Cu (9.1ppm), As (1.1ppm), Pb (18.8 ppm), Ni (11.0 ppm), Cd (0.02 ppm), and Cr (30.1 ppm) on the average. Heavy metals are concentrated less than ERL (Effect Range-Low), verified by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). In the core sediments, they are also less than the ERL. Based on the uniform vertical distribution of excess radioactivity of $^{210}Pb$, the core sediments seen to have been actively mixed biologically or rapidly deposited after the construction of Shi-Hwa Seawall. The 'enrichment factor' of metals, normalized to Al, shows that the upper sediments of 35 cm in depth are more polluted. infect was significant in 2 core sediment samples in 35 cm below layer.

Even though there can be a relative long-term or short-term change of their size in natural beaches due to various changes of sea condition such as the location, weather condition (wind and rain) and sea water flow, the budget of deposits in a specific area is generally regarded to be in a condition of equilibrium in terms of technology. However, as coasts are developed by many different kinds of ways (such as construction of sea walls and estuarine, dredging for gathering the aggregate and shore protection construction for establishing a structure) and sources of silt and gravel from rivers are decreased in balanced beaches, the beaches are in a serious danger of lack of sand and sand sources which are one of the maul elements to consist of them. Many swimming beaches in East Sea are directly exposed by waves generated and transmitted from outer seas. On the other hand, the Song-Do sandy beach which is this study's target area has a great condition for beach development because it locates the deepest place that is relatively shallow in Young-Il Man and there is big energy decrease given to waves from outer seas while the waves are reaching the Song-Do beach. Nevertheless, it is considered that artificial condition changes such as dredging for site extension by POSCO, getting straight of Hyoung-San Gang river flow and extension of Po-Hang harbor caused the sand loss of the beach. Therefore, some recovery plans of Song-Do sandy beach will be presented in this study and they will be compared and examined each other by numerical modeling experiment. After that, the best plan will be recommended.

In order to understand the relationship of depositional environment between fluvial and estuarine-embayment in Han River system, including depositional change in main Han River, more than 250 bottom sediment and 70 suspended sediment were analyzed with hydrologic data. Based on the previous data, the study area can be divided into two environment(fluvial and estuarine-embayment) by Singok underwater dam. The gravelly facies occurs in the South and North Han Rivers and sandy and silty facies occupies in the main Han River. Depositional environment of main Han River changed mainly because of limited sediment transport and hydrological condition. In the estuarine-embayment environment, coarse-grained sediments are dominant in tidal channel and of shore whereas fine and poorly sorted sediments are observed in coastal area. During moderate period, relationship between fluvial-estuarine-embayment system is discontinuou s because of flow restriction by artificial construction such as dam and underwater dam, so that each river system characterizes the individual environment. Fluvial and estuarine system is influenced by tide and, thus, transition zone of estuarine- embayment system moves landward. During flooding period, however, each river system is integrated as continuous depositional system by high discharge and, thus, transition zone of fluvial-estuarine-embayment system moves seaward. For further detailed systems about the lower Singok under-water dam, joint research of South-North Korea should be necessary.

From January to December 2007, we have investigated sediment types, environmental factors and density of clam Ruditapes philippinarum inhabited at Oeri, Naeri, Jonghyeon and Bangmiri tidal flats in Gyeonggi Bay off the west coast of Korea. Sediment types of Oeri and Jonghyeon were characterized with well sorted muddy sand. In contrast, Bangmiri tidal flat was mainly composed of poorly sorted gravelly muddy silt and Naeri was characterized with very poorly sorted muddy-sandy gravel. During the course of study, the surface water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH ranged 3.2 to $27.0^{\circ}C$, 21.7 to 33.3 ‰, 5.6 to 12.7 mg/l and 7.36 to 8.82, respectively. The suspended solid (SS) ranged from 3.2 to 1,266.0 mg/l and chlorophyll-a level in the water column ranged $0.3-36.1{\mu}g/l$, respectively. The density of clam in the study areas was mainly determined by the harvesting activities rather than the types of substrate. Relatively higher density of clam was observed in Oeri and Bangmiri where the clam seeds were sowed by the villagers. Condition factor of clams were found to be higher in Oeri where the substrate sorting was better with higher level of chlorophyll a. It was believed that sediment types and the level of available food the two governing factors controlling the density and growth of clam in Gyeonggi Bay.

Seagrass bed is an important component in coastal and estuarine ecosystems, providing food and shelter to a wide variety of fauna. Recently, seagrass coverage has declined significantly due to anthropogenic influences such as reclamation, dredging, and eutrophication and consequently, necessity of seagrass habitat restoration is rising. Transplantation experiments with Zostera marina using TERFS, staple method, and shell method have been conducted at Dadae Bay, Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay on the south coast of Korea to select an optimal transplanting method for restoration of Z. marina habitat. Three experimental sites located at the vicinity of natural Z. marina beds with an average water depth of about 4m. Z. marina plants, which were collected from donor bed in Koje Bay were also transplanted at 7 different time from October 2003 to July 2004 to find appropriate transplanting time. Density of Z. marina was monitored monthly at both transplanted areas and natural beds. Transplantation using the staple method showed the highest survival rate of transplant. Shell method was also an effective transplanting method at muddy areas in Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay, but not suitable at sandy areas in Dadae Bay. These results suggest that sediment composition of transplanting areas should be considered for the selection of the optimal transplanting method. Z. marina transplanted during fall usually showed the highest survival rate, while most Z. marina plants transplanted in summer died due to high lethal temperature during this period.

The study area is a pocket beach which consisted of sandy beach, dune, agricultural land and residential area etc. The coastal dune area is classified to foredune, dune plain, secondary (or back) dune. The foredune area is covered by herbaceous dune plants(ex. Carex kobomugi, Wedelia prostrata, etc.), whereas the dune plain area is covered by herbs and shrubs(Vitex rotundifolia). The most inner area, secondary dune, is planted by pine forest(Pinus thunbergii). The mean size of the beach and dune sediments ranges from 1.1 to $1.8{\Phi}$, which mean these values are higher than normal sediments. Sorting and Skewness is $0.6{\sim}-1.2{\Phi}$ and $-2.7{\sim}1.6{\Phi}$ respectively. We found that the soil formation process in the secondary dune area has been progressed rapidly from the analysis of fine grain content, organic matter content, and CEC.
