ALPS Ultimate limit state assessment of ships and offshore structure (선박해양구조물의 최종강도 해석용 프로그램 ALPS 적용사례)

  • It is now well recognized that the ultimate limit state approach is a much better basis for design and strength assessment of ships and offshore structures since it is difficult to determine the realistic margin of safety using the traditional allowable working stress approach on the basis of linear elastic method solutions together with buckling strengthchecks adjusted by a simple plasticity correction. This paper outlines ALPS theory for ultimate limit state assessment of ship structures. ALPS is a computer software which stands for nonlinear Analysis of Large Plated Structures. Application examples of ALPS program to ultimate limit state assessment of plates, stiffened panels and ship hull girders are presented. A benchmark study is made by a comparison with the ALPS solutions with other methods including class rule formulae, nonlinear finite element methods and experimental results.   • The voyage data is very important for safety of ships, and duty being effectuated by the installation of voyage data record (VDR) on ships. VDR is a black-box, and it contains 14 kinds of voyage data as text. But it is not easy to understand when the accident happened because voyage data is saved as complicated texts. User interface (UI), analysis, visualization system, which works for assist to gather information about situation of accident, was developed. It will be possible to develop onboard ship monitoring and voyage prediction system by the VDR visualization system's development in near future.

  • Until now, there are different kinds of design and evaluation method criteria for ship hulls and ship strength based on allowable stress design using past experiences. But for many sinking accidents of large ships in operation, it has also a doubt about allowable stress design. It is recognized that structural plastic collapse caused by large external force is a main cause of that accidents. Therefore, there is the need for new design criteria based on ultimate limit state with a consideration about progressive collapse behavior as a safety assessment of ship hulls. Also many aluminum alloy ships is built for the purposes of lightweight of ship hulls, with that, a developing of criteria based on ultimate limit state should be made. In this study, the ultimate strength characteristics of aluminum ship hull are investigated by the ALPS/USAS program using already developed design formula for aluminum plate and stiffened panel.

  • The sludge oils were produced necessarily in the ships operation, so that it will be the best way to manage the sludge oils inside ship itself from a viewpoint of the prevention of marine oil pollution from ship. The present study deal with the ultrasonic breaking systems which recycle the sludge oil from ships into usable oil to be burnt. The first place, experimental studies were carried out to investigate the homogenizing effect of the marine oils by repeated vibration of ultrasonic transducer. Variation of the properties(viscosity, specific gravity and pH) and the matrix structures for the environment of various marine oils were interpreted to analyze the breaking, dispersion effects by cavity. The experimental results can be useful to the development of sludge oil disposing systems.

  • Although the Korea shipbuilding industry has recently been receiving most of the orders for ships in the world, production processes are being disrupted due to a shortage of manpower at the production site. This is because the workers quit the shipyard as both work and wages were reduced due to the long slump in the shipbuilding industry. The main reason for the increase in orders was the large-scale orders for Qatar LNG carriers, and the situation in which the technical specifications required for ships are becoming more complex is also working to an advantage. Because the contract delivery time is of utmost importance for ships, the dock launch plan is the most important management item among the shipyard's major processes. The structure to be built in the dock may be a hull that has left the design work or a finished vessel, and in some cases, it is often at the level of some blocks of the hull. When launching, the hull is affected by the hogging or sagging moment due to the fluid force, and securing the safety of the structural strength of the block connection is of utmost importance. In a normal process, the connecting member launches after welding has been completed, but in actual shipbuilders, quick decision-making is needed on the conditions for securing structural safety to comply with the docking schedule. In this study, a detailed analysis method and applicability using a bending stress evaluation method and finite element analysis modelling were analyzed to rationally judge the above-mentioned problems from an engineering point of view. The main contents mentioned in the thesis can be used as good examples when conducting similar structural strength evaluations in the future.

  • In rough seas, water breaker of the sea-going ships is subject to high impact loads due to the green water and some ships' water breaker suffers structure damage. So, a substantial research on the structural response caused by green water impact is required. In this paper, the green water flow on bow deck is simulated by FDM(finite differential method). Using the results of green water simulation, impact loads on water breaker are calculated. Calculation results of the 6200TEU container ship's structural response to this green water impact pressure are shown and discussed for two condiered calculation conditions.

  • Reduction of a ship's rolling is the most important performance requirement for improving the safety of the crew on board and preventing damage to cargos as well as improving the comfort of the ride. A mass driving anti-rolling system (MD-ARS) might be one candidate of several systems against the ship's rolling. In this paper, three types of MD-ARS, two passive and one active devices, are developed for small ships. After they are installed on the cabin of the small leisure boat, respectively, a series of test is conducted before and after operating them. Through the test, it is confirmed that the roll responses of the ship are pretty well reduced by the system.

  • AIS(Automatic Identification System) is a radionavigation equipment for exchanging safety related information between ships as well as ship and shore station, introduced by SOLAS convention and widely used especially in vessel traffic service. However, in an area of broad communication coverage of coast station, various problems may appear in receiving AIS data from ships. In this paper, AIS problems that may happen in broad communication coverage of coast station are analyzed using received data.
