The process of slope stability analysis is one of the most important stages in design of some civil and mining projects. Bimslopes are made from bimrocks (block-in-matrix rocks) where rocky blocks are distributed in a bonded matrix of finer texture. These kind of slopes are often seen in weathered and near-surface depths. Previous studies have shown that VBP (Volumetric Block Proportion) is one of the most significant factors affecting bimrocks strength and consequently the stability of bimslopes. In this paper, the influence of block inclinations on bimslope stability have been investigated. For this purpose, 180 theoretical models have been made with various VBPs, all of them have a specified block size distribution. These bimslopes contain blocks with differing dips relative the slope inclination. Also for each kind of block inclination, 10 different blocks arrangements have been modeled. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to analysis the stability of these bimslopes models. The results showed the inclination of blocks has a strong impact on the Safety Factor and stability of bimslopes. When the difference in angle of dip of blocks relative to the slope angle is maximum, the Safety Factor of bimslopes tends to be a maximum compared with the matrix-only state. Furthermore, with increasing VBP of bimslopes stability increases. The graphs obtained from this study could be used for preliminary guidance in the projects design with bimslopes.
Three-dimensional slope stability analysis was applied to a failed dual-lithology slope containing both granite and an andesitic dyke, taking account of the differences in shear strength of the different lithologies. A direct shear test of the soil-rock boundary was performed to examine the shear strength of two different types of failure surfaces within different lithologies, and a laboratory test was performed on an upper, weathered soil layer. The test results indicate that shear strength was lower at the soil-rock boundary than within the weathered soil layer. A representative geological section was subjected to two-dimensional slope stability analysis using a limit equilibrium method to assess whether the distribution of lithologies upon the slope influences the results of stability analysis. The results were then compared with those of three-dimensional slope stability analysis, for which input parameters can be varied according to the distribution of lithologies upon the slope. The three-dimensional analysis yielded safety factors of 1.26 under dry conditions and 0.55 under wet conditions, whereas the two-dimensional analysis yielded unstable safety factors of 0.92 and 0.32, respectively. These findings show that the results of stability analysis are affected by the distribution of different lithologies upon the slope. Given that the studied slope collapsed immediately after rainfall, it is likely that the results of the three-dimensional analysis are more reliable.

Due to climate change and aging of reservoirs, damage to embankment slopes is increasing. However, the safety diagnosis of the reservoir slope is mainly conducted by visual observation, and the time and economic cost are formidable to apply soil mechanical tests and slope stability analysis. Accordingly, this study presented a predicting method for the compaction and strength characteristics of the reservoir embankment soil using a portable static cone penetration test. The predicted items consisted of dry density, cohesion, and internal friction angle, which are the main factors of slope stability analysis. Portable static cone penetration tests were performed at 19 reservoir sites, and prediction equations were constructed from the correlation between penetration resistance data and test results of soil samples. The predicted dry density and strength parameters showed a correlation with test results between R2 0.40 and 0.93, and it was found to replace the test results well when used as input data for slope stability analysis (R2 0.8134 or more, RMSE 0.0320 or less). In addition, the prediction equations for the minimum safety factor of the slope were presented using the penetration resistance and gradient. As a result of comparing the predicted safety factor with the analysis results, R2 0.5125, RMSE 0.0382 in coarse-grained soil, R2 0.4182 and RMSE 0.0628 in fine-grained soil. The results of this study can be used as a way to improve the existing slope safety diagnosis method, and are expected to be used to predict the characteristics of various soils and inspect slopes.

In this study, the effects of slope inclination and rainfall on weathered soil slope stability were investigated for current cut soil slope design criteria. A series of slope stability analysis was performed on the slopes with the same height (5m), but different inclinations (1:0.8, 1:1, 1:1.2, 1:1.5, 1:2). Seepage analysis was also conducted to examine the rainfall effects directly and compare the combined seepage and slope stability analysis results with the slope stability analysis results for rainy season from the current cut soil slope design criteria. Typical properties for weathered soils were used in both the slope and seepage analysis. The analysis results showed that, for the slopes much steeper than the standard slopes, the factor of safety criteria were satisfied. Therefore, it appears that the slope designs by current cut soil slope design criteria lead to conservative results.
With the rapid development of the distributed strain sensing (DSS) technology, the strain becomes an alternative monitoring parameter to analyze slope stability conditions. Previous studies reveal that the horizontal strain measurements can be used to evaluate the deformation pattern and failure mechanism of soil slopes, but they fail to consider various influential factors. Regarding the horizontal strain as a key parameter, this study aims to investigate the stability condition of a locally loaded slope by adopting the variable-controlling method and conducting a strength reduction finite element analysis. The strain distributions and factors of safety in different conditions, such as slope ratio, soil strength parameters and loading locations, are investigated. The results demonstrate that the soil strain distribution is closely related to the slope stability condition. As the slope ratio increases, more tensile strains accumulate in the slope mass under surcharge loading. The cohesion and the friction angle of soil have exponential relationships with the strain parameters. They also display close relationships with the factors of safety. With an increasing distance from the slope edge to the loading position, the transition from slope instability to ultimate bearing capacity failure can be illustrated from the strain perspective.

The current slope stability analysis of a filldam is based on the limit equilibrium method, and in calculation of safety factor during earthquake, adopts the seismic intensity method in which it considers a uniform seismic force from dam foundation to crest. However the observed behaviour of filldam during earthquake shows some different behaviour in that at the crest the measured acceleration is usually several times the ground acceleration. In this study, slope stability calculations of a filldam are provided based on the modified seismic intensity method, which can take into account the amplification phenomena of acceleration in the upper part of dam. And also the results of calculations are compared with that of current seismic intensity method.

Dynamic behaviors of the Korean High-speed Train(KHST) have been analyzed to investigate the performance on the stability, the safety and the ride comfort. Multi-body dynamics analysis program using Recursive method, called RecurDyn, have been employed in the numerical simulation. To model the wheel-rail contact, the RecurDyn uses its built-in module which uses the square root creep law. The accuracy of the rail module in RecurDyn. however, decreases in the analysis of flange contact because it linearizes the shape of the wheel and rail. To solve this problem, a nonlinear contact theory have been developed that considers the profiles of the wheel and rail. The results show that the KHST still needs more stability. The problem should be solved by the examinations of module and modeling.

In order to apply the Limit Equilibrium Method generally used for the slope stability analysis to the vertical excavation walls reinforced by soil-nailing, in this study, the Limit Equilibrium Method for the temporary shoring facilities reinforced by soil-nailing was proposed, which is based on the stability for the horizontal displacement. In this study, the relation of the internal friction angles of the ground and the vertical excavation depths was arranged, which is satisfying the stability on the horizontal displacement by using the verification of the Limit Equilibrium Method. And then, the rational reinforcing length of soil-nailing was proposed for the critical areas. In addition, the modified safety ratio satisfying the stability on the horizontal displacement was proposed, when the Limit Equilibrium Method was applied to the vertical excavation walls reinforced by soil-nailing.

This paper presents the results of a comparative study between FEM and LEM on slope stability analysis. For validation, factors of safety were compared between FEM and LEM. The results from the two methods were in good agreement suggesting that the FEM with the shear strength reduction method can be effectively used on slope stability analyses. A series of analysis were then performed using the FEM for various constitutive laws, slope angles, flow rules, and the finite element discretizations. Among the findings, the finite element method in conjunction with the shear strength reduction method can provide reasonable results in terms of factor of safety. Also revealed is that the results of FEM can be significantly affected by the way in which the type of constitutive law and flow rule are selected.
This study was carried out for safety evaluation, the practical application and improvement of design method of the agricultural reservoir embankment according to backside extension. Seepage analysis, slope stability analysis and finite element analysis were performed for steady state and transient conditions. Also, the pore water pressure, seepage quantity, safety factor and stress-strain behavior according to high water level and rapid drawdown were compared and analyzed. The pore water pressure at contact region between backside extension and old embankment was kept high after rapid drawdown. Therefore, backside extension is recommended that design method is required to be improved and reinforced more than the others raising embankment. The hydraulic gradients before and after backside extension showed high value at the base of the core, but they showed stable state at the upstream slope and downstream slope. The seepage quantity per 1 day and the leakage per 100 m for the steady state and transient conditions appeared to be safe against the piping. The safety factor of slope stability showed high at the steady state, and transient conditions did not show differences depending on the rapid drawdown. The safety factor was appeared high at the upstream slope before backside extension and downstream slope after extension. The excess pore water pressure for steady state and transient conditions showed negative(-) at the upstream slope, it was small at the downstream slope. The mean effective stress (p') showed high at the base of the core and to be wild distribution after the extension. The displacement after extension showed 0.02-0.06 m in the upstream slope, the maximum shear strain after extension was smaller than that before extension.
