  • The current global water market has been reshaped with a few multinational water companies, water-specialized companies, and other non-construction companies such as manufacturing and financial companies. Each has different business objectives along with the value chain of water industry. In this context, a SWOT-ANP model is proposed to prioritize strategic alternatives for a non-construction company in Korea and the result is validated through a comparison with the AHP model and real business strategies of the company examined from the recent news reports. The validation was confirmed that the company's strategies are very much similar to the priority list and the rankings of the strategic alternatives are identical with those from AHP model, while the weights are slightly changed from the weights in AHP result.

  • Product liability (PL), which began enforcement in 2002, refers to the legal responsibility of the manufacturers or sellers (wholesales or retailers) for the property damage or bodily harm caused by their product. With a strong enforcement of the Product Liability (PL) Act, companies are required to structure and operate a response system to defend or prevent product accidents efficiently, but small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are unable to respond more aggressively due to limitation of management resources. In this manner, it is important to develop response strategies for SMEs to efficiently cope with the PL Act. In this paper, the PEST (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological) analysis is performed to reveal the impact of the PL Act on SMEs in macro-economic point of view. To formulate SME's PL response strategy, SWOT analysis is performed to categorize each factors from PEST analysis and AHP is applied to identify the intensities of SWOT factors. The prioritized SWOT factor, results of PEST-SWOT-AHP analysis, are used to formulate SME's PL response strategies. The study results are briefly summarized as follows. To reduce product defects, it is necessary for SMEs to formulate PL response strategies for each phase of the product life cycle by continuously collecting and analyzing PL cases in the same industry or for similar products. In addition, SMEs should invest more technological effort to ensure product safety. Further, SMEs should spread PL awareness to all staff members by training internal PL experts. Moreover, a SME should enroll in PL insurance and spread this information to its customers so that they become aware that the company is proactively conforming to the PL law.

  • Science and technology(S&T) are not only advancing, but also the number of stakeholders in those fields are increasing, and so the demands of S&T strategy for a particular field are increasing. In Korea, especially, this tendency is remarkable, and is evidenced by the fact that more than one hundred of S&T strategies have been established and implemented. First, through an analysis of the literature, previous studies on the establishment of a national S&T strategy and its related concepts are reviewed. Also, a representative framework plans, in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations, are reviewed. Meanwhile, the methodology, PEST-SWOT-AHP, is proposed and the features and applications are identified. For the case study, the strategy establishment of a fusion research and development program is performed. In order to apply the PEST-SWOT-AHP tool, an environmental analysis based on the fusion R&D roadmap is conducted. To examine the usefulness of the proposed framework, a national fusion R&D strategy applying PEST-SWOT-AHP is derived. As a result of the case study, four strategies were derived.
