This study investigated the effects of artificial supercooling followed by still air freezing (SSF) on the qualities of pork loin. The qualities of pork frozen by SSF were compared with the fresh control (CT, stored at 4℃ for 24 h), slow freezing (SAF, still air freezing) and rapid freezing (EIF, ethanol immersion freezing) treatments. Compared with no supercooling phenomena of SAF and EIF, the extent of supercooling obtained by SSF treatment was 1.4℃. Despite that SSF was conducted with the same method with SAF, application of artificial supercooling accelerated the phase transition (traverse from -0.6℃ to -5℃) from 3.07 h (SAF) to 2.23 h (SSF). The observation of a microstructure indicated that the SSF prevented tissue damage caused by ice crystallization and maintained the structural integrity. The estimated quality parameters reflected that SSF exhibited superior meat quality compared with slow freezing (SAF). SSF showed better water-holding capacity (lower thawing loss, cooking loss and expressible moisture) and tenderness than SAF, and these quality parameters of SSF were not significantly different with ultra-fast freezing treatment (EIF). Consequently, the results demonstrated that the generation of supercooling followed by conventional freezing potentially had the advantage of minimizing the quality deterioration caused by the slow freezing of meat.
lactic acid production from cellulose by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation(SSF) was studied. The SSF using cellulase enzyme Cytolase CL and Lactobacillus delbrueckii was strongly inhibited by the end product(lactic acid). An ion-exchange resin(RA-400) was used for in-situ product removal during SSF. The sorption capacity of the resin was 200mg/g-resin. The simple SSF and the extractive SSF resulted in lactic acid concentrations of 30.4g/L and 32.0g/L, respectively, at the initial substrate concentration of 50g/L. A model was developed to simulate the extractive SSF. The lactic acid conversion for the initial substrate of 100g/L was estimated to be improved from 60% to 09% by in-situ product removal. The experimentally determined kinectic parameters were pH dependent, and fitted as empirical expressions to establish their values at different pH's. Lactic acid productivity was predicted to be maximum at pH 4.5-5.0.
Application of pervaporative extraction of ethanol to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation(SSF) of cellulose was investigated. From batch experiments, optimum cellulose substrate and enzyme loadings were found to be 10% and 15 IFPU/g cellulose, respectively. The cellulose conversion was lowered in fed-batch system due to the ethanol accumulation. The activity of the yeast Saccharomyces uvarum used in this study was significantly reduced at ethanol concentrations above around 40 g/L. From pervaporation experiments using PDMS membrane, ethanol was efficiently separated at 38$^\circ C$ and 10 mmHg of a down stream pressure. The pervaporation unit with 240 cm$^2$ of surface area was combined into the SSF reactor. The continuous removal of ethanol by pervaporation during SSF resulted in an improved cellulose conversion. Within the scope of this experiment, ethanol yields in the pervaporative SSF and simple SSF were 68.3% and 56.6%, respectively. The permeate flux for SSF broth pervaporation was about one-half that for the pervaporation of aqueous ethanol solution. Accordingly, the development of a membrane with higher ethanol selectivity and flux will increase the feasibility of this technology.
Lactic acid production from ${\alpha}$-cellulose by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was studied. The cellulose was converted in a batch SSF using cellulase enzyme Cytolase CL to produce glucose sugar and Lactobacillus delbrueckii to ferment the glucose to lactic acid. The effects of temperature, PH, yeast extract loading, and lactic acid inhibition were studied to determine the optimum conditions for the batch processing. Cellulose was converted efficiently to lactic acid, and enzymatic hydrolysis was the rate controlling step in the SSF. The highest conversion rate was obtained at 46$^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.0. The observed yield of lactic acid from ${\alpha}$-cellulose was 0.90 at 72 hours. The optimum pH of the SSF was coincident with that of enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimum temperature of the SSF was chosen as the highest temperature the microoraganism could withstand. The optimum yeast extract loading was found to be 2.5g/L. Lactic acid was observed to be inhibitory to the microorganisms' activity.
Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the uniform flow (UF) and sinusoidal streamwise flow (SSF) over an oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder with harmonic heaving motion at initial angles of attack of α = 0° and 3° using two-dimensional, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. First, the aerodynamic parameters of a stationary 5:1 rectangular cylinder in UF are compared with the previous experimental and numerical data to validate the capability of the computationally efficient two-dimensional URANS simulations. Then, the unsteady flow field and aerodynamic forces of the oscillating 5:1 rectangular cylinder in SSF are analysed and compared with those in UF to explore the effect of SSF on the rectangular cylinder. Results show that the alternative vortex shedding is disturbed by SSF both at α = 0° and 3°, resulting in a considerable decrease in the vortex-induced force, whereas the unsteady lift component induced by cylinder motion remains almost unchanged in the SSF comparing with that in UF. Notably, the strong buffeting forces are observed at α = 3° and the energy associated with unsteady lift is primarily because of the oscillations of SSF. In addition, the components of unsteady lift induced by the coupling effects of SSF and cylinder motion are discussed in detail.
Thermal acid hydrolysis pretreatment of Kappaphycus alvarezii was carried out with 12% (w/v) seaweed slurry and 180 mM H2SO4 at 140°C for 5 min. Utility of the thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus KCTC7150 was evaluated with respect to cell growth and ethanol fermentation at 40°C was close to optimal for enzymatic hydrolysis. This could lead to the integration of both the saccharification and fermentation processes. The levels of ethanol production by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) with non-adapted and adapted K. marxianus KCTC7150 were 9.1 g/l with an ethanol yield (YEtOH) of 0.24 and 10.2 g/l with an ethanol yield (YEtOH) of 0.27 at 156 h, respectively. The two-phase SSF process was employed in this study to improve the efficiency of ethanol fermentation. Adapted K. marxianus KCTC7150 using the two-phase SSF process produced 13.5 g/l with an ethanol yield (YEtOH) of 0.35 at 96 h. Development of the two-phase SSF process could enhance the overall ethanol fermentation yields of the seaweed K. alvarezii.

Microbial production of cellulolytic enzymes by Aspergillus niger in solid state fermentation (SSF) and submerged state fermentation (SF) in laboratory scale was compared. Czapek Dox liquid broth amended with cellulose (0.5%) was used for cultivation in SF, whereas rice bran was used as a solid support, moistened with cellulose, amended Czapek Dox broth for growth in SSF. The production of Carboxymethyl cellulase, Filter paperase and ${\beta}$-Glucosidase was monitored at regular intervals. The peak production of the enzymes occurred within 3 days of incubation in SSF as against $\geq$ 7 days in SF. SSF gave higher yields of enzymes in comparison to SF. Maximum titres of 0.40, 0.62 and 0.013 U/ml in respect of FPase, CMCase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase in SSF were recovered as against 0.13, 0.06 and 0.0013 U/ml in SF respectively, at their respective peak time intervals. Hence, SSF appeared to be a better choice for production of cellulolytic enzymes by Aspergillus niger.
We propose an effective algorithm, which can predict the detailed behavior of the intensity-modulated high speed optical signal after propagating through an optical fiber. The alogrithm is based on the SSF (Split Step Fourier) Method, however, the step size is automatically calibrated in each calculation step to reduce the number of calculations within given round-off error bound. Applying the algorithm to the 2.5 Gbps 100 km transmission and 10 Gbps 40 km transmission simulations, we achieved the calculation time reduction by maximum 1/120 and 1/56 of the calculation time by using the SSF fixed step algorithm previously known. The root-mean-square of the round-off error was kept within -30 dB compared to the signal level throughout the calculation.
A novel simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process from the microcrystalline cellulose to ethanol was developed by using $\delta$-integrated recombinant cellulolytic Saccharomyces cerevisiae L2612$L2612\deltaGC$, which can utilize cellulose as carbon and energy sources. The optimum amount of enzymes needed for the efficient conversion of cellulose to ethanol at $30^{\circ}C$ was determined with commercial cellulolytic enzymes. By fed-batch cultivation, the heterologous cellulolytic enzymes were accumulated up to 42.67% of the total cellulase and 29% of the $\beta$-glucosidase needed for the efficient SSF process. When this $\delta$-integrated recombinant yeast was applied to the successive SSF step for ethanol production, 20.35 g/l of ethanol was produced after 12 h from 50 g/l of microcrystalline cellulose. By using this novel SSF process, a considerable amount of commercial enzymes was reduced.
In order to experimentally investigate the effect of Ni or Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of high Si Solution Strengthened Ferritic Ductile cast Iron (SSF DI), a series of lab-scale sand casting experiment were conducted by changing initial concentration of Ni up to 3.0wt% or Cu up to 0.9wt% in the alloy. It was found that increase in Ni or Cu content in the alloy leads to increase in strength properties and hardness as well as decrease in ductility. The higher Ni or Cu content the SSF DI has, the higher fraction of pearlite was observed. At similar levels of Ni or Cu contents in the alloy, higher pearlite area fraction was observed in the Cu-containing SSF DI than that in the Ni-containing SSF DI. When the effect of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Ni-containing SSF DI was considered, Ni-containing SSF DI was found to have excellent strength and hardness as well as good elongation when the pearlite fraction was controlled less than 10%. As the pearlite fraction in the Ni-containing SSF DI exceeds 10%, however, it shows drastic decrease in elongation. Meanwhile, gradual increase in strength and hardness, and decrease in elongation with respect to increase in pearlite fraction were observed in Cu-containing SSF DI. The different microstructure-mechanical property relationships between Ni-containing and Cu-containing SSF DI were due to the combined effect of the relatively weak pearlite stabilizing effect of Ni compared to that of Cu in high Si SSF DI, and matrix strengthening effect caused by the different amounts of those alloying elements required for similar pearlite fraction.
