Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Schizonepeta Spica water extract (SS) on the OVA-induced BLAB/c mice allergic rhinitis model. Methods : Thirty two BALB/c mice were equally assigned to 4 groups; the sham group, the control group, the cetirizine hydrochloride (Cet) treatment group, and the SS treatment group. Sham group was sensitized and challenged with saline, and the other groups were sensitized and challenged with OVA. The dosage of SS was 7.6 mg /kg·day, and Cet was 10 mg/kg·day. Nasal rubbing and sneezing were measured by the behavior observation. The concentrations of IL-1β, IL-10, TNF-α and MIP-2 in the sera of allergic rhinitis model were measured by mouse cytokine/chemokine magnetic bead panel kits. Total IgE and OVA-specific IgE were measured by ELISA method. Epithelial thickness and eosinophil infiltration of nasal septum was investigated by histological examination. Results : The clinical symptoms that increased in control group were significantly reduced in SS-treated group. Serum total IgE and OVA-specific IgE in the SS-treated group were significantly reduced compared to the control group. The concentration of IL-1β, IL-10, TNF-α and MIP-2 in SS-treated group showed a significant reduction compared to the control group. The infiltration of eosinophil into nasal tissues of SS-treated group decreased markedly compared to control group, and thickness of nasal septum in nasal mucosa showed a significant reduction compared to control group. Conclusions : According to the above result, it is suggested that SS may inhibit the early and late phase of allergic rhinitis reaction.
A membrane bioreactor (MBR) was designed using polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)-type hollow fiber membrane modules with a treatment capacity of 10 ton/day. A pilot plant was installed in a sewage treatment plant and was operated with an intermittent aeration method which avoids any concentration gradient of suspended solids (SS) in the MBR. For continuous operation, the pilot plant was first tested with influent (mixed liquor suspended solid:MLSS of 1000-2000 mg/L) of aeration tanks in the sewage treatment plant. The MBR was pre-treated with washing water, 10% ethanol solution, 5% NaOCl solution and finally washing water, one after another. To demonstrate the effect of the MBR on sewage treatment, compared with conventional activated sludge processes, we investigated the relationships among permeate amount (LMH), change in operation conditions, influent MLSS level and sludge production. It was found that the optimum aeration rate and suction pressure were $0.3\;m^3$/min and 30~31 cmHg, respectively. Under stable conditions in aeration, suction pressure, influent flow rate and drainage, the SS removal efficiency was more than 99.99% even when the MLSS loading rate changes. Compared with conventional activated sludge processes, the MBR was more effective in cost reduction by 27% based on permeate amount and by 51.5% on sludge production.
Nodule development was regulated partially by host plant factors originating in the shoots and roots. This study was performed to identify the origin of the factors regulating nodulation in supernodulating soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) mutant 'SS2-2' which was isolated recently from ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis of 'Sinpaldalkong 2'. Self- and reciprocal-grafts were made among three soybean genotypes which consisted of two supernodulating mutants, SS2-2 and 'nts 382', and a normal nodulating Sinpaldalkong 2. Self-grafted supernodulating mutants were characterized by greater nodule number, nodule dry weight, and $C_2$H$_2$ reduction activity than self-grafted wild types. They were also characterized by relatively higher nodule to root dry weight. Significant shoot genotypic effects were observed on nodule number, nodule dry weight, and $C_2\;H_2$ reduction activity per plant, whereas varying root genotypes had no effects. From this result, it is surmised that supernodulating characters are controlled by a graft-transmissible shoot factor, and mutant SS2-2 may have similar nodulation mechanism to the former supernodulating nts 382. In all grafts, both supernodulating mutants and Sinpaldalkong 2 maintained the similar balance between above ground and below ground parts regardless of significant differences in partitioning of dry matter into root and nodule between supernodulating mutants and Sinpaldalkong 2.
Single-shot echo planar imaging(SS-EPI) is well established as high sensitivity for ischemic stroke. However, it is prone to susceptibility artifact in brain stem that diminish the image quality. single-shot turbo spin echo(SS-TSE) is a new DWI technique that can reduce susceptibility artifact. Thus, this research was conducted so as to reduce geometric distortion in brain stem by using single-shot turbo spin echo technique. Thirty patients without brain disease underwent diffusion MR on a 3T scanner with SS-EPI and SS-TSE. Obtained images with both sequences were analyzed for geometric distortion and error percentage as well. Image quality in terms of geometric distortion of SS-TSE were found to be significantly better than those for SS-EPI. And error percentage was considerably reduced for 2.4% of b0 image(from 11.1% to 8.7%), 1.2% of b1000 image(from 11.4% to 10.1%), respectively. In summary, diffusion MR using SS-TSE significantly reduce geometric distortion compared to SS-EPI in brain stem and may provide improved diagnostic performance.
In this study, we introduced enzymatic pretreatment method, together with ozone treatment for sludge digestion. We optimized the amount of enzyme and ozone, respectively for the successful sludge pretreatment. As a result, we found that as more enzyme is used, higher sludge hydrolysis efficiency was obtained. When we treated sludge by ozone ranging from 0.01g $O_3$/g SS to 0.04 g $O_3$/g SS without enzyme treatment, 0.04 g $O_3$/g SS showed the highest increase of SCOD. Meanwhile, when protease was used together with the same ozone dosage ranges, 0.03g $O_3$/g SS ozonation resulted in the highest increase of SCOD. The sludge pretreatment was optimized by controlling the amount of enzyme and ozone.
We consider an overlaid broadcast service, where a spread spectrum (SS)-based broadcast signal is overlaid onto the existing terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) band. The system is similar to the augmented data transmission in the ATSC DTV, for which it was investigated mostly in terms of link level performance, such as bit error rate. Our focus in this paper is on the system-level performances. More specifically, utilizing both a large scale path loss and a small scale fading channel model, the primary objective is to explore the tradeoff between the coverage and the achievable rate of the overlaid service and, finally, to determine the achievable rate in the overlaid service for marginal coverage reduction in the existing broadcast service. The analytical and simulation results show that an SS-based add-on service of 10 kbps to 20 kbps can co-exist with the T-DMB service while resulting in only a marginal degradation in T-DMB coverage (for example, less than one percent reduction).

In this study, LiDAR-detective black material is synthesized by recycling silicon sludge (SS) that is generated from semiconductor manufacturing process, and its recognition is confirmed using two types of LiDAR sensors (MEMS and Rotating LiDAR). In detail, metal impurities on the surface of SS is removed, followed by coating of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and subsequent chemical reduction to obtain SS-derived black TiO2 (SS/bTiO2) material. As-prepared SS/bTiO2 is mixed with transparent paint to prepare hydrophilic black paints and applied to a glass substrate using a spray gun. SS/bTiO2-based paint shows similar blackness (L*=15.7) compared to commercial carbon black-based paint, and remarkable NIR reflectance (26.5R%, 905nm). Furthermore, MEMS and Rotating LiDAR have successfully detected the SS/bTiO2-based paint. This is attributed to the occurrence of high reflection of light at the interface between the black TiO2 and the silicon sludge according to the Fresnel's reflection principle. Hence, the new application field to effectively recycle silicon sludge generated in the semiconductor manufacturing process has been presented.
Improvement of the solid-liquid separation efficiency in the secondary sedimentation tank of the biological treatment process, is known to be increasing effectiveness of the overall system operation. Sewage treatment plant effluent SS is composed of most organic substances. In order to reduce the SS component in the secondary sedimentation tank discharge, fine SS components constituting the heterogeneous should be increased by its own aggregation (self flocculation), so that can be deleted through their precipitation. So, it is improved through using the installation of double rectification wall in this secondary tank. In case, sewage is rapidly increased due to the daily change of the influent water, it was confirmed that suspended solids caused by the impact load are processed stably. Therefore, there is a need for a facility installation which can be its own aggregation for reduction suspended solids in secondary sedimentation tank.

In view of the importance of sulfhydryl groups in producing a chemical protection against ionizing radiation, an attempt was made to evaluate the changes of intrinsic non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) and non-Protein disulfide(NP-SS) of the lung and liver tissues of rabbits following the whole body X-irradiation with 900 r either in single or fractionated $(300\;r{\times}3)$ dose. NP-SH was measured by Ellman's method, and NP-SS was measured by the electrolytic reduction method described by Dohan. Experiment was performed at 1,3,5,24 and 48 hours post·irradiation, and the results were compared with the control. The results thus obtained are summarized as follows; 1) Intrinsic levels of NP-SH and NP-SS of normal rabbits were $0.77{\pm}0.10$ and $0.61{\pm}0.07\;{\mu}mol/gm$ wet weight in liver, and $0.28{\pm}0.03$ and $0.54{\pm}0.03$ in lung tissues respectively. 2) NP-SH of liver after single X-irradiation showed no significant change in general, but at 48 hours post·irradiation, it was elevated comparing with the normal value. 3) Levels of NP-SS in liver was decreased than the normal value in the irradiated groups, and the lowest level was observed at 3 hours after single X-irradiation and at 5 hours after fractionated irradiation. 4) In lung tissues, levels of NP-SS showed no significant change from the control at earlier experimental hours, but a great decrease was observed at later Part of the experiment.
In the absence of exogeneous nitrogen supply, evaluation of a symbiosis effectiveness of Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110 in a supernodulating soybean mutant, SS2-2, its wild type, Sinpaldalkong 2, and control genotype, Jangyeobkong, was conducted in this study. Nodules in SS2-2 were initially white and similar to its wild type, Sinpaldalkong 2. At the late stage, the wild type nodules became dark pinkish by maturation, by contrast, mature nodules in SS2-2 remained light green to pinkish, indicating a lack of leghemoglobin. Tap root length was short in nodulated symbiotic SS2-2 than that of its wild type and the control genotype. Nodulated root length and nodule density on root length were significantly increased by B. japonicum inoculation, but no significant increase was observed on root length and percentage of nodulation to total root length. Regardless of Bradyrhizobium inoculation, SS2-2 showed higher nodule dry weight and higher acetylene reduction activity (ARA) when compared with its wild type and the control genotype. Inoculation of B. japonicum leaded the increase of ARA in 47 days after planting (DAP), in part because of nodule development. Supernodulating mutant, SS2-2, less responded to B. japonicum induction in terms of nitrogen fixation and nodulation characteristics than its wild type. Thus, interaction of supernodulating soybean mutant with Bradyrhizobium had less symbiotically associated response than normal nodulating soybean.
