  • Spatial resolution of land covers from remotely sensed images can be increased using super-resolution mapping techniques for soft-classified land cover proportions. A further development of super-resolution mapping technique is downscaling the original remotely sensed image using super-resolution mapping techniques with a forward model. In this paper, the model for increasing spatial resolution of remote sensing multispectral image is tested with real SPOT 5 imagery at 10m spatial resolution for an area in Bac Giang Province, Vietnam in order to evaluate the feasibility of application of this model to the real imagery. The soft-classified land cover proportions obtained using a fuzzy c-means classification are then used as input data for a Hopfield neural network (HNN) to predict the multispectral images at sub-pixel spatial resolution. The 10m SPOT multispectral image was improved to 5m, 3,3m and 2.5m and compared with SPOT Panchromatic image at 2.5m resolution for assessment.Visually, the resulted image is compared with a SPOT 5 panchromatic image acquired at the same time with the multispectral data. The predicted image is apparently sharper than the original coarse spatial resolution image.

  • Satellite image for national land monitoring is required high resolution and natural color with multi spectral band. the image is expensive as higher resolution. We need cheap image relatively in economic viewpoint but the image serves sufficient resolution to monitor national land. We merged two images to one image and evaluated the result. the two images which are used at the merge test are high resolution(2.5m per pixel) panchromatic and low resolution(10m per pixel) multi spectral image of SPOT-5 satellite. The result of this study. We made the merge image to have sufficient resolution for national monitoring.

  • The simple method of evaluating highly marbled beef was examined by image analysis. The images of the cross section at the 6 to 7th rib were obtained from 82 carcasses of Wagyu cattle. By using an overall trace method, the surrounding edges of the longissimus thoracis and three muscles were traced automatically and manually with image analysis. In a spot method, 3 to 5 locations (2.5 or 3.0 cm in diameter) for each muscle were rapidly selected with no manual trace. The images were flattened, binarized, and the ratio of fat area to muscle area was determined. The correlation coefficients for marbling between different muscles, and between the overall trace and the spot methods were 0.55 to 0.81 between different muscles and 0.89 to 0.97, respectively. These results suggested that the simple spot method is speedy and almost as useful as the overall trace method as a measuring technique for beef marbling in loin muscles, especially for highly marbled beef.

  • Resistance spot welding has been widely used in the sheet metal joining processes because of low cost, high productivity and convenience. Recently, automobile and aerospace industries are trying to replace partly steel sheets with aluminum alloy sheets. But in the case of dissimilar materials, to apply resistance spot welding has been known to be very difficult owing to the effect of melting temperature. On this study, an effort was made to apply spot welding of dissimilar sheet metals, 2024 aluminum alloy and zinc coated steel sheet, evaluate the spot weld quality with tensile-shear strength test and nondestructive evaluation technique, C-scan image methodology. In this study results, as the current below 11 kA, melting of materials is not achieved well. Also as the current exceeds to 13.5 kA, the more spatters happen at welded zone and tensile-shear strength lowered. So, the feasibility of C-scan image technique proposed in the study is found to be suitable evaluation method for resistance spot weldability.

  • Data integration techniques are becoming increasing1y important for conquering a limitation with a single data. Image fusion which improves the spatial and spectral resolution from a set of images with difffrent spatial and spectral resolutions, and image registration which matches two images so that corresponding coordinate points in the two images correspond to the same physical region of the scene being imaged have been researched. In this paper, we compared with six image fusion methods(Brovey, IHS, PCA, HPF, CN, and MWD) with panchromatic and multispectral images of IKONOS and developed the registration method for applying to SPOT-5 satellite image and RADARSAT SAR satellite image. As the result of tests on image fusion and image registration, we could find that MWD and HPF methods showed the good result in term of visual comparison analysis and statistical analysis. And we could extract patches which depict detailed topographic information from SPOT-5 and RADARSAT and obtain encouraging results in image registration.

  • This paper discusses the feasibility of Ultrasonic Nondestructive Evaluation (UNDE) technique for sport weld quality. Ultrasonic c-scan image assisted by image processing technique was used for Nondestructive Evaluation(NDE) of spot weld quality. Ultrasonic testing results obtained were confirmed and compared by Optical Microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Mircroscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section, The results show that the nugget dinameter can be successfully measured with the accuracy of 0.5mm. It was ascertained that ultrasonic c-scan technique is very effective method for the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of the corona bond from nugget. Additional support for the above conclusions is provided by the results for galvanized steel. The ultrasonic results for galvanized welds generally correspond to the results for uncoated steel. Finally, it was found that the above-mentioned technique can be sufficiently applied to NDE method for securing the Quality Assurance(QA) of spot welded products in production line.

  • With precise sensor position, attitude element, and imaging resolution, a simulated geospatial image can be generated. In this study, a satellite image is simulated using SPOT ortho-image and global elevation data, and the geometric similarity between original and simulated images is analyzed. Using a SPOT panchromatic image and high-density elevation data from a 1/5K digital topographic map data an ortho-image with 10-meter resolution was produced. The simulated image was then generated by exterior orientation parameters and global elevation data (SRTM1, GDEM2). Experimental results showed that (1) the agreement of the image simulation between pixel location from the SRTM1/GDEM2 and high-resolution elevation data is above 99% within one pixel; (2) SRTM1 is closer than GDEM2 to high-resolution elevation data; (3) the location of error occurrence is caused by the elevation difference of topographical objects between high-density elevation data generated from the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and Digital Surface Model (DSM)-based global elevation data. Error occurrences were typically found at river boundaries, in urban areas, and in forests. In conclusion, this study showed that global elevation data are of practical use in generating simulated images with 10-meter resolution.

  • In this study, we investigate the feasibility of modeling entire image strips that has been acquired from the same orbital segments. We tested sensor models based on satellite orbit and attitude with different sets(Type1 ~ Type4) of unknowns. We checked the accuracy of orbit modeling by establishing sensor models of one scene using control points extracted from the scene and by applying the models to adjacent scenes within the same orbital segments. Results indicated that modeling of individual scenes with 1st or 2nd order unknowns was recommended. We tested the accuracy of around control points, digital map using the HIST-DPW (Hanjin Information Systems & Telecommunication Digital Photogrammetric Workstation) As a result, we showed that the orbit-based sensor model is a suitable sensor model for making 1/25,000 digital map.

  • In building geographic information for North Korea, we proposed the method of using SPOT-5 image, designed geographic information layers, and inspected the location accuracy. Basically this study is similar to existing method in which uses GCPs to build geographic information from SPOT-5 satellite imagery. However, this study adopted a different method of GCP acquisition. The GCP used in this study is a triangulation point which was made at Japanese imperialism eras. The location accuracy error was 8.755 meters horizontally, which satisfied the tolerance of 17.5 meters in the 1:25,000 scale public survey guidance. In conclusion, we suggest that geographic information for North Korea can be built from SPOT-5 images with the triangulation point made in Japanese imperialism times.

  • In protein 2-DE image analysis, the accuracy of spot-matching operation which identifies the spot of the same protein in each 2-DE gel image is intensively influenced by the errors caused by the various experimental conditions. This paper proposes an efficient method to find more accurate spot-matching patterns based on multiple reference gel images in spot-matching pattern analysis in protein 2-DE image analysis. Additionally, in order to improve the reduce the execution time which is increased exponentially along with the increasing number of gel images, a "partition then extension" framework is used to find spot-matching pattern of long length and of higher accuracy. In the experiments on real 2-DE images of human liver tissue are used to confirm the accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
