  • A K-Best algerian is known as optimal for implementing the maximum-likelihood detector (MLD), since it has a fixed maximum complexity compared with the sphere decoding or the maximum-likelihood decoding algorithm. However the computational complexity of the K-Best algrithm is still prohibitively high for practical applications when K is large enough. If small value of K is used, the maximum complexity decreases but error flooring at high SNR is caused by error propagation. In this paper, a K-reduction scheme, which reduces K according to each search level, is proposed to solve error propagation problems. Simulations showed that the proposed scheme provides the improved performance in the bit error rate and also reduces the average complexity compared with the conventional scheme.

  • Multipath diversity reception is applied to the compensation of the distortion of channel, which occurs in transmission of data at rapid speed. DS/BPSK systems are composed of the equipment with reception structure combined with a compensation algorithm to diversity branch. The efficiency of the system is evaluated from the point of view of average bit error rate according to SNR. In order to remove intersymbol interference, this algorithm is applied to time-invariant channel at every diversity branch with the number of L. As a result, the average bit error rate is saturated by $10^{-2}$ at the conventional compensation algorithm.

  • In wireless communications, knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio is required in diverse communication applications. In this paper, we derive the variance of the maximum likelihood estimator in the data-aided and non-data-aided schemes for determining the optimal shrinkage factor. The shrinkage factor is usually the constant that is multiplied by the unbiased estimate and it increases the bias slightly while considerably decreasing the variance so that the overall mean squared error decreases. The closed-form biased estimators for binary-phase-shift-keying and quadrature phase-shift-keying systems are then obtained. Simulation results show that the mean squared error of the proposed method is lower than that of the maximum likelihood method for low and moderate signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

  • In this paper, we investigate the effects of impulsive noise on the DS/SSMA system using TCM. We obtain the bound on the probability of bit error of the system, considering bothing impulsive noise and Rician fading, which are unavoidable in mobile communication environments. it turns out that we can achieve some coding gain by using TCM under impulsive noise environment. It is observed that the bit error probability is dominated by the background noise variance when the SNR is low and by the tail noise variance when the SNR is high.

  • In this paper, the performance of dual-hop multi-relay maximum ratio transmission (MRT) over Rayleigh flat fading channels is studied with both conventional (all relays participate the transmission) and opportunistic (best relay is selected to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)) relaying. Performance analysis starts with the derivation of the probability density function, cumulative distribution function and moment generating function of the SNR. Then, both approximate and asymptotic expressions of symbol error rate (SER) and outage probability are derived for arbitrary numbers of antennas and relays. With the help of asymptotic SER and outage probability, diversity and array gains are obtained. In addition, impact of imperfect channel estimations is investigated and optimum power allocation factors for source and relay are calculated. Our analytical findings are validated by numerical examples which indicate that multi-relay MRT can be a low complexity and reliable option in cooperative networks.

  • Electrogastrography(EGG) is a noninvasive method for measuring gastric electrical activity on the abdomen resulting from gastric muscle. EGG signals have a very low frequency range (0.0083 ~0.15 Hz) and extremely low amplitude(10~100 uV). Consequently, EGG signal is easily influenced by other noises. Both finite impulse response(FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters need high orders or have phase distortions for passing very narrow bandwidth of the EGG signal. In this study, we decomposed EGG signals using a wavelet multiresolution method with Daubechies mother wavelet. The EGG signals were decomposed to seven levels. We reconstructed signal by summing the decomposed signals from level four to seven. To evaluate the performance of the wavelet multiresolution filter(WMF) with simulated EGG signal using two kinds of FIR and four kinds of IIR filters., we used two indices; signal to noise ratio(SNR) and reconstruction squared error(RSE). The SNR of WMF had 9.5, 6.9, and 4.7 dB bigger than that of the other filters at different noise levels, respectively. Also, The RSE of WMF had $1.22{\times}10^6, 1.16{\times}10^6, 1.02{\times}10^6$ smaller than that of the other filters at different noise levels, respectively. The WMF performed better in the SNR and RSE than two kinds of FIR and four kinds of IIR filters.

  • In this paper, the performance of a multicarrier CDMA system applying M-ary orthogonal signaling and adaptive subchannel allocation scheme is analyzed for forward links in Rayleigh fading channel. Also, the effect of error caused by subchannel allocation is analyzed. In the proposed system, each DS waveform is transmitted over the subchannel having the biggest fading among L subchannels. Considering M-ary orthogonal signaling and 4 subchannels, the BER of $10^{-3}$ is satisfied if SNRs are 7.33 dB, 5.33 dB, and 4.47 dB for k = 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Therefore, SNR is decreased as k is increased. If the error of subchannels exists, the BER of $10^{-3}$ is met if SNR is 8.18 dB in the absence of M-ary orthogonal signaling. So, a required SNR is declined about 0.85 dB. Adding the M-ary orthogonal signaling with k = 4, it is observed that the multicarrier CDMA system has performance improvement because a required SNR is 5.44 dB.

  • In order to transmit high-speed wide band signals efficiently in multipath fading environments, M-ary QAM signalling combined with OFDM transmission technique is applied. In this paper, the effect of synchronization error caused by carrier frequency offset and SER(Symbol Error Rate) performance of OFDM-16QAM and OFDM-64QAM are theoretically analyzed. Our result shows that as the number of sub-carrier in OFDM system increases the frequency-offset caused inter-channel interference(ICI) increases significantly, and that an error floor occurs even at high SNR of OFDM system. For OFDM-64QAM, the error floor occurs at SER=1$\times$10-7 when a normalized frequency-offset is 0.001, in which the SNR degradation is much greater than that of OFDM-16QAM. From this study the maximum allowable frequency-offset of OFDM-16QAM and OFDM-64QAM systems can be determined to meet the specific SER requirement.

  • This paper introduces the Spatially Preprocessed Speech Distortion Weighted Multi-channel Wiener Filter (SP-SDW-MWF) for multi-microphone noise reduction and proposes a method to determine the speech distortion weights. The SP-SDW-MWF is known as a robust noise reduction algorithm against the error caused by the mismatch in microphones. The SP-SDW-MWF adopts weights which determine the amount of noise reduction at the expense of introducing speech distortion in the noise-suppressed speech. In this paper, we use the error of power spectral density between the estimated signal and the desired signal as the evaluation measure. Thus the a priori SNR is used to control the speech distortion weights in the frequency domain. In the experimental results, the proposed method yields better result in terms of MFCC distortion compared to the conventional method.
