  • Recently there has arisen concern in both the database community and the graphics society about data retrieval from large motion databases because the high dimensionality of motion data implies high costs. In this circumstance, finding an effective distance measure and an efficient query processing method for such data is a challenging problem. This paper presents an elaborate motion query processing system, SMoFinder (Similar Motion Finder), which incorporates a novel kinematic distance measure and an efficient indexing strategy via adaptive frame segmentation. To this end, we regard human motions as multi-linkage kinematics and propose the weighted Minkowski distance metric. For efficient indexing, we devise a new adaptive segmentation method that chooses representative frames among similar frames and stores chosen frames instead of all frames. For efficient search, we propose a new search method that processes k-nearest neighbors queries over only representative frames. Our experimental results show that the size of motion databases is reduced greatly (${\times}1/25$) but the search capability of SMoFinder is equal to or superior to that of other systems.

  • Recently isolated, Pseudomonas putida SN1 grows on styrene as its sole carbon and energy source through successive oxidation of styrene by styrene monooxygenase (SMO), styrene oxide isomerase (SOI), and phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase. For the production of (S)-styrene oxide, two knockout mutants of SN1 were constructed, one lacking SOI and another lacking both SMO and SOI. These mutants were developed into whole-cell biocatalysts by transformation with a multicopy plasmid vector containing SMO genes (styAB) of the SN1. Neither of these self-cloned recombinants could grow on styrene, but both converted styrene into an enantiopure (S)-styrene oxide (e.e. > 99%). Whole-cell SMO activity was higher in the recombinant constructed from the SOI-deleted mutant (130 U/g cdw) than in the other one (35 U/g cdw). However, the SMO activity of the former was about the same as that of the SOI-deleted SN1 possessing a single copy of the styAB gene that was used as host. This indicates that the copy number of styAB genes is not rate-limiting on SMO catalysis by whole-cell SN1.

  • Much research has been done using the KDDCup99 data set to study intrusion detection using artificial intelligence. Previous studies have shown that the performance of the SMO (SVM) algorithm is superior. However, intrusion detection studies of new intrusion types not used in training are insufficient. In this paper, a model was created using the instances of weka's SMO and KDDCup99 training data set, kddcup.data.gz. We tested existing instances(292,300) of the corrected.gz file and new intrusions(18,729). In general, intrusion labels not used in training are not tested, so new intrusion labels were changed to normal. Of the 18,729 new intrusions, 1,827 were classified as intrusions. 1,827 instances classified as new intrusions are buffer_overflow. • Aim: To investigate the expression of three components of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway (SHH, SMO and GLI1) in human colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues and evaluate their association with clinicopathologic characteristics of the patients. Methods: Fresh tumor tissues and matched tissues adjacent to the tumor were collected from 43 CRC patients undergoing surgery. Normal colorectal tissues from 20 non-CRC cases were also sampled as normal controls. The expression of SHH, SMO, GLI1 mRNAs was assessed by RT-PCR and proteins were detected by immunohistochemical staining. Associations with clinicopathological characteristics of patients were analyzed. Results: SHH mRNA was expressed more frequently in tumor tissues than in normal tissues, but the difference did not reach significance in comparison to that in the adjacent tissues. SMO and GLI1 mRNAs were expressed more frequently in tumor tissues than in both adjacent andnormal tissues. The expression intensities of SHH, SMO, GLI1 mRNA in tumor tissues were significantly higher than those in adjacent tissues and normal tissues. Proteins were also detected more frequently in tumors than other tissues. No significant links were apparent with gender, age, location, degree of infiltration or Dukes stage. Conclusion: Positive rates and intensities of mRNA and protein expression of Hh signaling pathway related genes SHH, SMO, GLI1 were found to be significantly increased in CRC tissues. However, over-expression did not appear to be associated with particular clinicopathological characteristics.

  • This paper investigates some strategies to overcome the chattering problem of the conventional sliding mode observer (SMO) and to improve the rotor position estimation performance for full range sensorless control of a PMSM. An adaptive observer gain based on the Lyapunov's stability criterion and a cascade low pass filter with advanced phase delay compensation were proposed to reduce the chattering problem and to strengthen the filtering capability of the SMO. Several cases studies through experiments were carried out to confirm conventional SMO's problems and effectiveness of the proposed strategies. The experimental results show that the proposed method gives precise estimation on speed and rotor position when the motor rotates on 2% of its rated speed.

  • This paper presents the sliding mode observer-model following (SMO-MF) power system stabilizer(PSS) for unmeasurable state variables. This SMO-MF PSS is obtained by combining the sliding mode-model following (SM-MF) including closed-loop feedback(CLF) with the full-order observer(FOO). The control input of the proposed MO-MF PSS is derived by Lyapunov's second method to determine a control input that keeps the system stable for unmeasurable plant state variables. Simulation results show that the proposed SMO-MF PSS including CLF is able to reduce the low frequency oscillation and to achieve asymptotic tracking error between the reference mode state and the estimated plant state at different initial conditions.

  • In this paper, the power system stabilizer(PSS) using the sliding mode observer-model following(SMO-MF) with closed-loop feedback (CLF) for single machine system is extended to multimachine system. This a multimachine SMO-MF PSS for unmeasureable plant state variable is obtained by combining the sliding mode-model following(SM-MF) including closed-loop feedback(CLF) with the full-order observer(FOO). And the estimated control input for unmeasurable plant sate variables is derived by Lyapunov's second method to determine a control input that keeps the system stable. Time domain simulation results for the torque angle and for the angular velocity show that the proposed multimachine SMO-MF PSS including CLF for unmeasurable plant sate variables is able to damp out the low frequency oscillation and to achieve asymptotic tracking error between the reference model state at different initial conditions and at step input.

  • The studies on detection of the Strawberry mottle virus (SMoV) have been conducted in Poland for breeding programme purpose and for producers of strawberry plant material. Leaf samples collected from infected strawberry plants were grafted on Fragaria sp. Indicators which were maintained in greenhouse for further study. Seven Fragaria vesca var. semperflorens 'Alpine' indicators infected by SMoV were used for the study aimed on molecular characterization of virus isolates. Partial RNA2 was amplified from total nucleic acids using the RT-PCR method. The obtained amplicons separately digested with BfaI, FauI, HaeIII, HincI, and TaqI enzymes showed different restriction profiles. The nucleotide sequences analysis of RNA2 fragment confirmed the genetic diversity of the SMoV isolates as their similarity ranged from 94.7 to 100%. Polish isolates shared 75.7-99.2% identity with sequence of the virus strains from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Canada. Phylogenetic analysis resulted in grouping of the isolates found in Poland together with one of the Czech strain whereas two other from the Czech and the strains from the Netherlands and Canada created the separate cluster.
