Septins are a family of conserved cytoskeletal GTPase forming heteropolymeric filamentous structure in interphase cells, however, the mechanism of assembly are largely unknown. Here we described the characterization of SEPT12, sharing closest homology to SEPT3 and SEPT9. It was revealed that subcelluar localization of SEPT12 varied at interphase and mitotic phase. While SEPT12 formed filamentous structures at interphase, it was localized to the central spindle and to midbody during anaphase and cytokinesis, respectively. In addition, we found that SEPT12 can interact with SEPT6 in vitro and in vivo, and this interaction was independent of the coiled coil domain of SEPT6. Further, co-expression of SEPT12 altered the filamentous structure of SEPT6 in Hela cells. Therefore, our result showed that the interaction between different septins may affect the septin filament structure.
The present study was conducted to investigate the phage types(PT) of Salmonella enteritidis(SE) isolated from animals and human patients in Korea during the period 1993-1999. SE were isolated from chickens including the layer and broiler, duck, rat, swine and human patients in nationwide scale. A total of 231 non-human and 14 human SE strains were phage typed and 80.4%(197/245) of SE isolates tested could discriminate as a ten SEPTs including the RDNC by the 10 standard phages, which were brought from the Central Public Health Laboratory in England. In analysing of phage types both animal and human SE isolates, SEPT 4(55.4%) was the most prevalent in domestic animals including the layer(39.3%) and broiler(64.5%), duck(55.5%), and swine(75.0%) since 1993. About 57% of the S enteritidis from human was SEPT 4. Along with SEPT 4, SEPT 1, SEPT 6a, SEPT 7 and SEPT 7a var, SEPT 9b, SEPT 15, SEPT 21b and SEPT 22 were also found from animal and human SE isolates. SEPT 4(40.0%) was isolated from frozen chicken meats imported from China along with SEPT 7 and 7a var strains in this study. In conclusion, SEPT 4 was the most predominant SEPT in our country regardless of animal or human hosts including the Che-Ju island and almost exclusively found in domestic poultry(layer and broiler). During the review period, SEPT 4 has already been spreading continually among the animal hosts since 1993.

We collected seven species of shellfish; all originating from the southern coastal areas of Korea, from a market every three months from Dec. 2001 to Sept. 2002, and determined the total polychlorinated biphenyl(PCB) levels by the sum of 26 individual congener levels. A GC-ECD system was applied for identification and quantification of these PCB congeners. Mussel showed the highest level in Sept. 2002 at 34.5 ng/g dry weight(d.w.). All species except mussel showed the lowest total PCB level in Dec. 2001 and their levels in tissue ranged from 0.6 to 5.5 ng/g d.w. The total PCB levels ranged from 0.8 to 17.3 ng/g in Mar. 2002, 2.2 to 9.5 ng/g in June 2002, and 1.8 to 34.5 ng/g d.w. in Sept. 2002. The principal congener group was penta-CBs, which accounted for 32% of the total PCBs, followed by hexa-CBs at 23%, and tetra-CBs at 21%.
This study was conducted to investigate the isolation prequency, serotypes, and related epidemiological properties of 341 Salmonella spp from domestic poultry and environmental samples during the period 1993-1995. A total of 1,918 samples was collected during the three years period in nationwide. Most of Salmonella spp were isolated from the intestinal contents of poultry, especially cecal(46.0%) and rectal(35.8%) contents. Among the tested samples, rat(28.5 %) was the most predominant Salmonella reservoirs and followed by duck(24.8%), broiler(18.8%), layer(14.8%) and feed(7.1%), in order. More than twelve Salmonella serovars were identified among the 341 Salmonella isolates. The most prevalent serotypes isolated from non-human sources were S enteritidis (22.3%) and S pullorum (21.9%), S muenchen (13.9%), S typhimurium (12.6%), S gallinarum, S meleagridis, S heidelberg, and S senftenberg were followed, in order. In layer chickens, S pullorum (26.0%) was the most predominant serotype but S muenchen (33.0%) was in broiler chickens, S enteritidis (28.4%) was in ducks, and S typhimurium (60.0%) was in rats, respectively. As a results, S enteritidis was identified as the most prevalent serotype in non-human Salmonella isolates in Korea during the period 1993-1995. A preliminary study on the phage typing of 19 S enteritidis selected from the nationwide scale was shown that S enteritidis phage type(PT) 4 was the most predominant PT, and SEPT 1, SEPT 6a, SEPT 7 and SEPT 7a variant were also found in the same period.
To evaluate the optimal time for extracting lipids from the viscera of the common squid Todarodes pacificus the proximate and fatty acid compositions of the liver and gonads of commercial squid were analyzed according to sex for 6 months (Jul. to Sept. and Nov. to Jan.). The body and liver weights of the squid were larger in females than in males, and were larger from Nov. to Jan. than from Jul. to Sept. in both sexes. The average lipid contents in the livers of female and male squid were also higher from Nov. to Jan (22.9% and 24.9%, respectively) than from Jul. to Sept. (11.7% and 17.5%, respectively). The average lipid contents of the ovaries and testes were 5.16% and 1.76%, respectively, and changed little over the 6 months. The percentage of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid) was higher in the gonads (44.8-49.1%) than in the liver (36.3-37.6%). These results suggest that Nov. to Jan. is the best time to extract lipids from the liver, whereas there was no difference in the efficacy of lipid extraction from the gonads between the two seasons.
This study was carried out to determine the optimum harvest date of unshelled immature peanuts and dried kernels from 60 to 120 days after flowering. Fresh pod yield of spanish-type variety, 'Shaedl-tangkong(SD)' reached a peak of 9,140kg/ ha at 70 (days after flowering(Aug. 13) while that of virginia-type variety, 'Daepoongtangkong(DP)' reached a peak of 8,820kg/ha at 90 days(Sept. 11) after flowering. SD and DP showed maximum fresh kernel yield of 6,090 and 6,470kg/ha at 90 days after flowering (Sept. 11), respectively, while dry kernel yield reached a peak of 3,300 and 3,720kg/ha at 110 days(Oct. 1), respectively. Oil content of SD and DP were the highest at 90 days and 100 days after flowering, respectively and the oil content of two varieties increased rapidly from 60 to 90 days. Tannin content of the seed hull of SD increased continuously until 110 days after flowering while that of DP maximized at 100 days. The tannin content of the two varieties increased rapidly from 60 to 100 days. Total sugar of SD and DP showed highest content at 60 days and 70 days after flowering, respectively and suger content decreased very rapidly until 80 days and after that sugar content kept nearly constant. Oil, tannin and total sugar content of spanish-type SD were higher than those of virginia-type DP.
Dominant aphid species and seasonal fluctuations of the colonizing aphids on apple tree, peach tree, and pear tree were examined without insecticide treatment during $1982{\sim}1984$ in Suweon. The dominant species among the colonizing aphids in each fruit tree were Myzus malisuctus in April-June and Aphis citricola in Aug.-Oct. on apple tree; Myzus persicae in early springtime and Hyalopterus pruni in May-Oct. on peach tree; Sappaphis piri in April-June, Oct. and Aphis citricola in July-Sept. on pear tree. M. malisuctus and A. citricola on apple tree showed 3 peaks a year; the former was early June, late Aug. and early Oct., the latter early June, middle Aug. and late Sept. M. persicae on peach tree showed peak on late May to early June, and H. pruni on middle June and middle Oct. S. piri and A. citricola on pear tree showed 2 peaks a year; the former was late May and late Oct., the latter early June and early Sept.

Sesame cultivar Suweon 9 was sown at two planting time, June 19 and July 3, to study flowering and seed maturation process. Flowering began at 37-40 days after sowing at the 2-4th node and proceeded to upper node with the speed of 1.78 days (June 19 planting) and 1.56 days (July 3 planting) per node until Sept. 1. Sesame capsule reached its full size about 10 days after flowering. Number of sesame seed increased until 15 days, but seed weight gain occurred from 10 days to 35 days after flowering, that meant 25 days the actual seed filling period. The capsule flowered later than Aug. 14 remained immature. There was no more seed weight gain when average. temperature dropped below $20^{\circ}C$ (around Sept.15) and 50% of leaves had senesced. Discussion includes that sesame as an 8determinate plant may have independent source-sink relationship at each node.
