  • A some of synthesized 2,3-dihydro-2,2,4,6,7-pentamethylbenzofuran-5-yl substituents in 5-benzofuryl-2-[1-(alkoxyimino)alkyl]-3-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one derivatives as substrates were found to show herbicidal activity against rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) with post emergence under submerged conditions. The substrate with $R_{1}$=methyl substituents, $1{\sim}5$ showed the higher herbicidal activity to the seed, 3 leaf stage of rice plant and barnyard grass. The structure activity relationships (SARs) on the herbicidal activity of $R_{1}$ and $R_{2}$ on the azomethine bond in substrate were analysized. In the condition of $R_{1}$ groups are same, the herbicidal activity against 3 leaf stage of rice plant were governed by the optimal hydrophobicity $(logP)_{opt.}=4.57$. Whereas, in the case of barnyard grass, the herbicidal activities were largely dependent upon the steric effect, $B_{2}$ constant than hydrophobicity. In order to take the selective herbicidal activity between rice plant and barnyard grass, it is assumed that the (S) should be a round shape with higher hydrophobicity (logP>4.57) than optimal value. Also, the $R_{1}$ groups must be small and the $R_{2}$ groups are advisable to be unsaturate.

  • For the production of $2-O-{\alpha}-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic$ acid (ascorbic acid-2-g1ucoside, AA-2G) from ascorbic acid, the usability of spinach seed as the source of ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ having transglucosylation activity was studied. The optimum conditions for the production of AA-2G from ascorbic acid and glucose donor were investigated by using crude extract of Spinachia oleracea L. Woosung, the selected source of enzyme. The production of AA-2G was the highest with 1.053 mM when spinach seeds were grown for 2 days after germination. Maltose was the most effective glucose donor, and the optimum concentration of ascorbic acid and maltose were 175 mM and 225 mM, respectively. The optimum concentration of ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ was 60 units. The most effective buffer was sodium acetate and its optimum concentration was 175 mM. The optimum pH and temperature were 5.0 and $65^{\circ}C$, respectively. Under the optimum condition, 2.14 mM of AA-2G was produced from ascorbic acid after 50 minutes of reaction.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the growth habit and investigate a possibility of cultivating the GM rice (CaMsrB2-8) as a rice cultivar having drought resistance. Germination viability test showed that there was no significant difference between the drought-resistant GM(CaMsrB2-8) and non-GM (Ilmi) rice which was the parent variety at the GM rice. All the seeds of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi germinated after 6 days. Viviparous germination was not found in CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi that was grown in greenhouse at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with water spraying for 40 days. Ratooning of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi was observed in 7-14 days and found uniform in field condition. CaMsrB2-8 seemed to grow faster than Ilmi. But CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi were similar in 14-21 days. Both CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi showed low seed shattering and more than 90% grains were ripened. All the seeds scattered in the paddy soil surface were not germinated after passing the winter. This study suggests that the drought-resistant GM rice was not significantly different with the parent variety of Ilmi in many agronomic characteristics such as wildness traits.

  • To explain the change of the pungent principles of red pepper, capsaicin, during storage, the relation between infecting mold and capsaicin was studied. Results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. Superior strains which showed good growth and high decomposition activity in their culture broths, Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus sp. KF-7 were obtained from the contaminated red pepper fruits. 2. The weight of dry matter was increased at low concentration of capsaicin $(2{\sim}3{\mu}g/ml)$ but it was decreased at high concentration. 3. The residual capsaicin in the culture medium was reduced as half as such after 1 week, and almost disappeared after 2 weeks. At $30^{\circ}C$ and $pH\;7{\sim}9$ of culturing condition, the amounts of reducing capsaicin reached to the maximum. 4. At ground red pepper fruits as culture medium, Aspergillus sp. KF-7 could not glow at all, but Aspergillus oryzae showed good growth at 13% of moisture contents and the residual of capsaicin of red pepper fruits after 40days of cultivation time was 45%. 5. At ground red pepper fruits seed as culture medium, Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus sp. KF-7 showed good growth, and the residual of capsaicin after 4 weeks of cultivation time was 55% and 38% respectively.

  • This study was conducted to examine characteristics of rhizome growth and flowering of white lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) plant in Muan Hoesan-lake for collecting the basic data on the cultivation and the flowering which is growing in Muan Hoesan-lake of Jeonnam province in Korea. We have planted from the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes of the white lotus which were planted in the plastic containers on April 20 and May 4, 2008, and cultivated under rain shelter condition. Rhizome growth pattern and the flowering characteristics of the white lotus were examined on September 4, 2008. Main rhizomes of the white lotus propagated by the seeds and the enlarged rhizomes were branched by 10% and 15%, respectively. Numbers of nodes in the bloomed and non-bloomed rhizomes of the white lotus were over 14 and below 11, respectively. Flower was not observed in the white lotus when propagated with seeds, however, flowers came out up to 80% by the enlarged rhizomes. First flowers were bloomed from the late July and to the early August, and the number of flowers were 4.0~4.4. The first flower stalks without branching of the main rhizome were emerged in 8.8th node, however, that with branching were 8.0th node. Time to flowering from the emergence of flower stalk on the above-ground parts were required 16 days. White flowers from the lotus were 15.3 cm in height and 28.2 cm in width, their longevity was 3.3 days and the averaged flower fresh weight was 29.2 g. The results conclude that optimum number of nodes on the main rhizomes for blooming the white lotus flowers should be over 8 nodes before the rhizome enlargement.
