For the past scores of years, our country has driven its land development toward economic growth as its top priority. ut, as a result that almost all developments been promoted excepting environmental values, in fact, they've incurred some bad environmental effects desirable. Especially, as representative examples, we can raise some issues such as damages of the foreshore or coast wet lands by seas reclamation, and coast corrosion by building up of rivers or coast constructions. Recently, many people started to have great interests in businesses of environment preservation or recycling to minimize effects of these environmental matters. However, before beginning public businesses of non-commercial goods relevant to the seas environments, there seemed to be some limitations that can not accomplish under consideration of environmental sides at the same time while performing economic validities and efficiencies with environmental economic analysis, which is already effective in countries advanced in environment, it's a very meaningful course in that citizens' opinions are being influenced in seas environmental policies for their efficient execution. In this research, after modeling coast corrosion preventives with Jeong-am coast of Gangwon Province, and using Contingent Valuation Method being widely used of value measuring methods on Non-commercial goods, we've appreciated environmental economy's validity of construction works and the scale of environmental economic value of beach restoration work.

Annual and monthly pollock catches, CPUE and fishing grounds in the high seas of Bering Sea between 1984 and 1992 were analyzed for centroid distribution and bivariate ellipses of trawlers of South Korea, Japan, Poland and China. The catch amount differed by country as 56.1%, 21.7%, 20.4% and 1.8% were caught by Japan, Korea, Poland and China respectively. Japan recorded the highest mean CPUE at 5.7 ton/hour while it was 4.3 ton/hour for Poland, 3.9 ton/hour for Korea and 2.4 ton/hour for China. Cumulative catch varied by month, with the minimum of 137,000 ton in March and the maximum of 848,000 ton in December. Monthly mean of CPUE was the lowest in February (2.0 ton/hour) and the highest in November (6.3 ton/hour). The centroid distribution of monthly fishing ground was located at a southern spot ($56^{\circ}$ 05'N, $178^{\circ}$ 55'E) in January, and it moved anti-clockwise toward $56^{\circ}$ 37'N, $178^{\circ}$ 24'E in December. Fishing grounds were scattered more by the east-west direction than by the south-north direction. The fishing grounds were similar for Korean, Japanese and Polish trawlers, but Chinese trawlers that fished only from July to December showed distinctively different fishing grounds from the others.
Objectives: The annual catch of the common squid Todarodes pacificus in Korean coastal waters has gradually increased since the late 1980s. We investigated the long-term effects of climate variability on the variation in catches of the squid in the offshore fisheries of Korea. Methods: Moving average method, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to determine the relationship between the environmental factors and fluctuation in the catch of the squid during the past 30 years (1981- 2010). A ten-year moving average was calculated and used for each variable. Results: Squid catches in Korean coastal waters increased over time, and there were significant variations within every ten years (p < 0.001). Air temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind grade among the meteorological factors, alongside sea surface temperature (SST) and concentrations of phosphate phosphorous, and nitrite/nitrate nitrogen in the sea water increased and were positively related with the catch size of squid (p < 0.001). However, salinity decreased and was negatively related with the catch size (p < 0.001). The increase in air temperature and SST was almost parallel, although there was a time lag between the two factors. Conclusion: These results suggest that there is a causal association between climate change and squid populations. Climate change, especially ocean warming, appears to have been largely favorable for squid range expansion into Korean seas. Although the expansion may be helpful for the human food supply, the safety of the squid caught should be monitored since the concentrations of phosphorous and nitrogen in the sea water increased, which indicates that Korean seas have grown gradually more polluted.
We present theoretical models for the unstedy transports driven by the time-varying wind stress in horizontally unbounded shallow seas of an uniform depth. We derive linearized transport equations that inchude the acceleration, the Coriolis firce, the wind stress and the bottom friction. The steady transport in a shallow sea is different from the classical Ekman transport because of a presence of non-negligible bottom fricttttion. The transient reansport and an inertial oscillation of which frequency of rotation is the same as the frequency of the wind stress forcing. The transprt associated with a wind stress of which direction changes linearlywith time is decribed by a superpoeition so a free inertial oscillation with a pweiod of one inertial day, The theoretical models of the transports are useful in understanding the time-varying currents and the transports of nutrients in shallow seas.
Surfactant-enhanced ozone sparging (SEOS), an advanced version of SEAS (surfactant-enhance air sparging) was introduced in this study for the first time for removal of non-volatile contaminant from aquifer. The advantages of implementing SEAS, enhanced air saturation and expanded zone of sparging influence, are combined with the oxidative potential of ozone gas. Experiments conducted in this study were tow fold; 1-dimensional column experiments for the changes in the gas saturation and contaminant removal during sparging, and 2-dimensional box model experiment for the changes in the size of zone of influence and contaminant removal. An anionic surfactant (SDBS, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) was used to control surface tension of water. Fluorescein sodium salt was used as a representative of watersoluble contaminants, for its fluorescence which is easy to detect when it disappears due to oxidative degradation. Three different gases (air, high-concentration ozone gas, and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for the sparging of 1-D column experiment, while two gases (air and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for 2-D box model experiment. When SEOS was performed for the column and box model, the air saturation and the zone of influence were improved significantly compared to air sparging without surface tension suppression, resulted in effective removal of the contaminant. Based on the experiments observations conducted in this study, SEOS was found to maintain the advantages of SEAS with further capability of oxidative degradation of non-volatile contaminants.

The author studied on the distribution of V. parahaemolyticus among sea water, sea mud, and various marine products in Jeju, Keoje, Namhae, Yockji, Busan, and Masan on the southern seas of Korea from winter in 1981 to summer in 1982. The author studies for the isolated strains to bacteriological identification Kanagawa phenomenon(hemolytic activity) on Modified Wagatuma blood agar plates and serotypes with anti V. parahaemolyticus. The results obtained were as follows:. 1. V. parahaemolyticus was isolated in 713 strains(28.3%) among 2519 total specimens of sea water, sea mud, and various marine products. 2. The isolation rates of V. parahaemolyticus in summer season were higher than in spring and winter season. Above results were 304 strains(32.6%) among 932 specimens in summer, 160 strains (28.1%) among 570 specimens in spring, 149 strains(14.6%) among 1017 specimens in winter, respectively. 3. The hemolysis on Modified Wagatuma agar added human erythrocytes was 66.0% of positive Kanagawa phenomenon, and was 34.0% of negative Kanagawa phenomenon, respectively. 4. The distributions of serotypes of V. parahaemolyticus isolated were from KI to K VIII of K pooling antisera. The results were 6 strains(6.6%) on K 1 of K I, 14 strains(l5.5%) on K 17 of K II, 26 strains(28.8%) on K 28 of K IV. 10 strains(11.1%) on K 32 of KV, 4 strains(4.4%) on K 39 of KV, 8 strains(8.8%) on K 42 of K VI, 2 strains(2.2%) on K 48 of K VII, 1 strain(1.1%) on K 50 of K II and 7 strains(7.7%) on K 55 of K VII, respectively. 5. V. parahaemolyticus was more frequently isolated from sea mud than sea water and various marine prdoucts in winter season. 6. There was no great difference as far as the distribution of V. parahaemolyticus concerned in Jeju, Keoje, Namhae, Yockji, Busan and Masan of the southern seas of Korea.

The population of small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis, in the Yellow and East China Seas has decreased significantly since the mid 1970s. Several management measures have been introduced to conserve it, but population size remains low. To rebuild this population, it is now necessary to consider more effective management methods based on the stock assessment. To determine long-term population changes, fishery and biological data collected over 34 years (1969-2002) were analysed. Yearly fish length compositions were analysed for the time periods 1968 through 1970, 1978 through 1982, and 1993 through 2002; and catch data was available from 1969 to 2002. Annual population sizes were calculated based on length composition, the relationship between total length and body weight, and total landings. Analyses showed that since the 1970s, average size of harvested fish decreased; the proportion of less mature fish (smaller than the 50% maturity length, 19cm) in catches has increased and the estimated biomass has decreased significantly. Consequently, the main management recommendation is that juvenile fish need to be better protected to allow the rebuilding of resources to a more sustainable population level. This will require fish size limit, permissible mesh size, and closed area and season regulations.

Sea transportation has long been a vital component of the transport systems of the world. The great majority of imports and exports to and enlarge their national merchant marines. This effort is meant partly to arrest earlier trends of having their trade carried by ships from outside the region and partly to promote regional integration and improve the national balance of payments. However, sea transportation has been exposed to various types of threats on the high seas, in coastal waters and in port areas. Piracy is any robbery or other violent action, for private ends and without authorization by public authority, committed on the seas. Because piracy has been regarded as an offense against the law of nations, the public vessels of any state have been permitted to seize a pirate ship, to bring it into port, to try the crew(regardless of their nationality or domicile), and, if found guilty, to punish them and to confiscate the ship. Piracy has occurred in all stages of maritime history. The increased size of merchant vessels, the improved naval patrolling of most ocean highways, the regular administration of most islands and land areas of the world, and the general recognition by governments of piracy as an international offense resulted in a great decline in piracy in the 19th and 20th centuries. Piracy has, however, occurred in the 20th century, and the practice of hijacking ships has developed into a new form of piracy. The number of incidents of sea piracy against ships reported was 229 in 1997. Since 1991, 1,051 such acts have been reported. The purpose of this research is to examine the origin and development of the piracy to understand the current situation of such violence on the seas. In addition, what should be done by international community will be presented to prevent the piracy in the future.
The primary objective of this thesis is to study, case by case, the international disputes for fishing rights between fishing nations and costal states never imagined till the introduction of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea adopted in 1982 and came into effect in November 16, 1994, which governs the high seas and EEZ in a new manner. Such a study is to provide help in the understanding on this new marine system and how to deal with. This is addressed by the perspectives of disputes (a) in the high seas between fishing nations having traditionally enjoyed the principle of the freedom of the high seas and costal states, (b) in the EEZ between fishing nations and costal states possessing the exclusive jurisdiction over living marine resources and sovereign rights for determining allowable catch and the surplus in its EEZ. The article can be divided into four main parts. First, both the general principles of the settlement of international disputes, and the nature and procedures described in the UNCLOS are introduced. Second, it gives cases of tuna long-liner, North Pacific trawler and squid jigger occurred in the coastal states EEZ, and analyses the problem in both terms of its background and final judgment. It further describes the possible issues in case it depends on the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for its settlement. Third, closely tied to above, important points such as the right of hot pursuit, prompt release of vessel and crew, and the limits of cooperation with costal states inspector on board fishing vessels are considered mostly based on the UNCLOS, Bilateral Agreement and UNIA. Finally, the article concludes as follows ; The need for broad analyses on the nature of international suits and legal system for the settlement, to win the case before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea or coastal states court, is really acknowledged. However, considering the lack of previous studies about it, it is preferably recommended that governmental efforts for making legal standards to cover the judicial costs, for helping industry out of becoming bankrupt.

Today, about 98% of the international trade which leads the global economy is conducted at seas. This situation shows that maritime security is a key component for the stable development not only for international economy but also for the international security. Further, it suggests that the international society have reached to the stage that needs to fundamentally evaluate issues of the international maritime security cooperation and make further development. However, the international cooperation might not be an easy task to achieve because each nation faces different maritime security issues and maritime security cooperations require massive manpower and budgets due to diverse types of threats. Therefore, this paper analyzes status and issues of maritime security cooperation in vicinity of Malacca Strait and Somalian seas as key SLOCs for international economy. Based on this analysis, this paper aims to contribute to improve stability for the international economy by suggesting directions for the further development.
