  • The first and second moments of response variables for SDOF systems with hysteretic nonlinearity are obtained by a direct linearization procedure. This adaptation in the implementation of well-known statistical linearization methods, provides concise, model-independent linearization coefficients that are well-suited for numerical solution. The method may be applied to systems which incorporate any hysteresis model governed by a differential constitutive equation, and may be used for zero or non-zero mean random vibration. The implementation eliminates the effort of analytically deriving specific linearization coefficients for new hysteresis models. In doing so, the procedure of stochastic analysis is made independent from the task of physical modeling of hysteretic systems. In this study, systems with three different hysteresis models are analyzed under various zero and non-zero mean Gaussian White noise inputs. Results are shown to be in agreement with previous linearization studies and Monte Carlo Simulation.

  • In this study a new detection technique based on WAK is introduced that can be used for identifying unstable concrete sleeper installed in ballast by triggering activated wave on the sleeper surface. If a gap exists immediately below the concrete sleeper, static stiffness can be lower than stable case's stiffness. The concrete sleeper is assumed as a single degree of freedom system (SDOF). The static stiffness K can be obtained by iteratively calculated mass (m), stiffness (k) and damping coefficient (c) of SDOF system. Those coefficients are used to specify the ballast condition such as a gap between the sleeper and ballast. Typical test results using a small sleeper model test are summarized and explained for proof of effectiveness of the WAK test for checking unstable condition of the sleeper.

  • An observatory termed 'Steel Swing' has been developed, where a 15000 kg pendulum is hanged from a stiff steel frame. A building element can be tested after inserted between the pendulum and the frame. Free vibration, forced vibration tests and earthquake monitoring were performed on an exposed-type steel column base. The response records monitored during natural earthquakes were used to identify the vibration property of the specimen. Identified system gain was approximated by a theoretical gain of linear SDOF system, and the response calculated based on such a linear system agrees with the monitored response fairly well. This research technique can be applied to check the behaviors of new materials and new details of connections and the safety of non-structural elements as well.

  • Current seismic design codes for building structures are based on the methods which can provide enough capacity to satisfy objected performance level and exactly evaluate the seismic performance of buildings. This paper is to suggest the method of inference of inelastic earthquake response obtained from MDOF system by equivalent SDOF system, and to prove the validity. The analysis results form simple model shows a good application possibility.

  • Hwang et al (2001) proposed a new method for an evaluation of equivalent damping ratios of a linear structure with linear or nonlinear damping devices. This procedure has a disadvantage that it requires time history analysis for the whole system including damping devices, which may be troublesome for practical application. To tackle this problem closed form formulas for equivalent damping ratios are proposed in this study. It is assumed that the responses of MDOF system can be reproduced by an equivalent SDOF system which vibrates in a fundamental mode. The numerical analyses of a ten-story building equipped with linear viscous damper or active mass damper or friction damper show the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a new method for evaluating equivalent damping ratios of a structure with supplemental damping devices to assess their control effect quantitatively. A MDOF system is transformed to an equivalent SDOF system based on the assumption that the first mode dominates structural response. Approximate closed-form formulas for the evaluation of the first damping ratio are presented for various damping devices. Through numerical analysis of a ten-story building equipped with damping devices, the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas are verified.

  • System-level ductility is an essential parameter for seismic performance evaluation of multistory building structures. The ductility demands for single degree of freedom structures or individual structural members can be determined easily. However, there is no clearly established method to determine the ductility demands for structural systems. The system ductility demands are estimated in this study by the equivalent SDOF system methods and proposed method which used the representative responses obtained from the MDOF systems directly. And seismic performance of building structures is evaluated by the modified Capacity Spectrum Method using the representative responses, and the result was compared with those of the inelastic time history analysis.

  • Acceleration time history (ATH) used in the seismic analysis should envelop a target power spectral density (PSD) function in addition to the design response spectrum in order to have sufficient energy at each frequency for the purpose of ensuring adequate load. Even though design regulations require the ATH used in seismic analysis to meet a target PSD function, the reason that ATHs meet to a target PSD function is not described. Thus, artificial ATHs for high PSD function and artificial ATHs for low PSD function are generated. And then elastic and inelastic single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems are loaded with these artificial time histories as the earthquake load. As a result, linear response and inelastic response of SDOF systems are affected by PSD function.

  • This paper compares the seismic response control performance of linear and non-linear models fer tuned liquid damper (TLD). The existing linear and nonlinear TLD models were used for the numerical analysis of single degree of freedom (SDOF) and multi degree of freedom (MDOF) systems with TLD. The nonlinear model considers the variation of the frequency and damping of the TLD with varying excitation amplitude while the linear one has the invariant parameters. Numerical analysis results from SDOF systems indicate that the nonlinear model shows about 5% better control performance than linear one when the mass ratio is 2% and the optimal parameters for reducing peak responses are dependent on the characteristics of the excitation earthquake loads.
