Recently, electricity consumption has rapidly increased along with economic growth. The operating strategy using emergency generator is aimed, to resolve a demand response management. For strategy of peak shedding using emergency generator, it is essential to introduce the fast transfer switching device. One of the most effective solutions is to use a static transfer switch (STS) based on thyristor. However, the characteristic of natural commutated SCR thyristor should anticipate short duration voltage sag. STS system thus requires more than a quarter cycle to successfully complete transfer process. This paper proposes the operation scheme of the STS system using the forced-commutation technique to mitigate instantaneous voltage sag during peak transfer process. Proposed STS system improved turn-off characteristic thus accomplishes the peak load shedding satisfied power quality. Performance of the proposed STS system is evaluated using electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) to confirm the effectiveness.
This paper deals with an improved current source using full-bridge converter type for thyristor valve test of HVDC system. The conventional high-current and low-voltage source of synthetic test circuit requires additional auxiliary power supply to provide the reverse voltage for the auxiliary thyristor valve during turn-off process. The proposed circuit diagram to provide the reverse voltage is extremely simple because no additional component is required. The reverse voltage can be obtained from the input DC voltage of the high-current and low-voltage power supply. The operation principle and design method of the proposed system are described. Simulation and experimental results in scaled down STC of 200 V, 30 A demonstrate the validity of the proposed scheme.
The thyristor among the power-semi-conductor elements, which has large current capacity and high voltage, is used widely nowadays. When the thyristor was being used to the long time, this element may be able to arise the system trip caused by changing the characteristic and dropping the performance. Therefore, it would be necessary to analyze the characteristic of element to maintain the stable operation of the system. In oder to analyze this characteristic, it would be need to test forward direction, reverse direction and leakage current by supplying the half-sine wave voltage. Among these testing, transient current condition is generated from the testing of leakage current. This transient current may be the main factor of the error in the precise measurement of leakage current. Therefore, this paper analyzes the relationship between supply voltage and transient current in measuring leakage current of the SCR, and then suggests the condition and cause of transient current as appearing the leakage current in the testing the leakage current.
This paper deals with an analysis of SCR thyristor switching pattern for a power quality disturbance generator with phase jump function. The proposed generator can be applied to the performance test of custom power devices. Voltage sag, swell, outage, unbalance and phase jump after outage are provided by the generator. The phase jump operating principle of the generator is described and analysed. Especially, a proper switching of the SCR thyristors for the proposed generator is important to guarantee the system reliability. Therefore the switching patterns for the thyristors in each made were analysed.
In this paper, a design of high-speed power-off circuit and analysis. The incidence of high-dose transient radiation into the silicon-based semiconductor element induces the photocurrent due to the creation of electron-hole pairs, which causes the upset phenomenon of active elements or triggers the parasitic thyristor in the element, resulting in latch-up. High speed power-off circuit was designed to prevent burn-out of electronic device caused by Latch-up. The proposed high speed power-off circuit was configured with the darlington transistor and photocoupler so that the power was interrupted and recovered without the need for an additional circuit, in order to improve the existing problem of SCR off when using the thyristor. The discharge speed of the high speed power interruption circuit was measured to be 19 ${\mu}s$ with 10 ${\mu}F$ and 500 ${\Omega}$ load, which was 98% shorter than before (12.8 ms).
The DC circuit breaker is essential for supplying stable DC power with the advent of DC transmission/distribution and sensitive loads. Compared with mechanical circuit breakers, which must interrupt a very large fault current due to their slow breaking capability, a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) can quickly break a fault current almost within 1 [ms]. Thus, it can reduce the damage of an accident a lot more than mechanical circuit breakers. However, previous DC SSCBs cannot perform the operating duty, and are not economical because many SCR are required. Therefore, this paper proposes a new DC SSCB suitable for DC grids. It has a low semiconductor conduction loss, quick reclosing and rebreaking capabilities. As a result, it can perform the operating duties of reclosing and rebreaking. The proposed DC SSCB is designed and implemented so that it is suitable for home dc distribution at a rated power of 5 [kW] and a voltage of 380 [V]. The operating characteristics are confirmed by simulation and experimental results. In addition, this paper suggests design guidelines so that it can be applied to other DC grids. It is anticipated that the proposed DC SSCB may be utilized to design and realize many DC grid systems.
Recently the importance of the cargo handling equipments in a port has been increasing to get strong competition from other ports. Many ports are making efforts to modernize their cargo handling equipments. The kernel technology of such equipments is the speed control of DC motor which is used as an essential part of them. In this paper, we discuss the speed control of a DC motor as a basic work for building cargo handling equipments in a port. DC Motors are still widely used in industrial fields, as driving power motor for electrical fields. DC drives, being easy to control, are widely used in many variable-speed and position control drive system. Traditional analog control circuits used in such applications have many disadvantages. Complex control schemes are difficult to implement with analog components. All these factor and invention of the microprocessor has made it possible to use digital control circuits, using microprocessing system. These digital circuits have been found to be reliable, flexible, and also immune to noise. In this paper it presents the speed control of a SCR DC motor driver which using dual converter by 80c196kc microprocessor. We developed a thyristor power amplifier which does not cause damage thyristor because it is designed to prevent triggering the two SCRs in the same arm simultaneously. And it was analyzed voltage and currents wave at reactive load.
The inductor which is used at low frequency as the main part of magnetic ballast consists of an iron core, a bobbin and coil. The conventional inductor design method is not suitable for the magnetic ballast because it has various variables and is not a unique method for the magnetic ballast. Thus, this paper presents the optimal design method for a lamination type inductor using a magnetic ballast for Metal Halide Lamps. Also, the optimal inductor design method is researched for inductors of dimming ballasts and ignitors that have a gate-triggered structure using a SCR thyristor. By the simulation and experimental results, we showed that the proposed design methods is valid.
The smelting system using induction heating technology has many advantages over conventional fossil fuel regarding energy efficiency, environmental aspect and so on. This paper introduces the principal and technical trends of Induction heating technology, and describes recently developed 2500kW induction smelting inverter, The developed inverter is a series resonant type using high speed Thyristor (SCR) and employs state-of-art digital controller using DSP.
The current source HVDC using thyristor valves requires the reactive power compensator, the increasement of short circuit ratio(SCR) by AC source, and the harmonic filter in power transmission. The voltage source HVDC that controls active power and reactive power independently can minimize the requirements and also can be used as a reactive power source without additional reactive power compensators. In this paper, the solution of supplying active power using direct current transmission and compensating additional reactive power at the heavy load zone in metropolitan area is proposed and verified by simulations.
