  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship of hardiness, job stress, and burnout in nurses, and to identify predictors of burnout. Method: Empirical data were collected from 154 staff nurses at one university hospital in Gwangju city. Self- reported questionnaires were composed of the Personal Views Survey(PVS), job stress scale, Tedium scale, and 7 items asking nurse's general characteristics. Data analysis was done with a SAS package. Result: In correlation analysis, hardiness, job stress, and nursing satisfaction had significant correlation with burnout. In stepwise multiple regression, 28.7% of the variance in burnout was accounted for by nursing satisfaction (19.9%), job stress (6.0%), and hardiness (2.8%). Among subscales of hardiness, only commitment was a significant predictor, so nursing satisfaction, job stress, and commitment explained 28.9% of variance in burnout. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the development of program for nurses to increase nursing satisfaction is needed, and more studies to examine causal relationship between nursing satisfaction and burnout is also highly recommended.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to meta-analyze the effects of hardiness on health-related variables. Method: After review of 19 studies performed by Korean nurses, research variables, statistical data(r or F), and other methodological data were extracted and coded. Research variables were categorized under 5 groups such as health-related behavior, well-being, adaptation, stress, and support according to conceptual similarity. Using SAS program, 20 research variables and 34 effect sizes were calculated after eliminating heterogeneous data by Q-test, Results: Effects of hardiness on whole research variables was .512 and ranged from .322 to .643 by categories. The greatest effect was obtained from well-being category, whereas the smallest effect from stress category. All effect sizes were statistically significant. But fail-safe numbers were small and failed to achieve reasonable tolerance level. Conclusion: Results of meta-analysis indicated that hardiness has a moderate effect on health-related variables. But for improving the reliability of the results by minimizing publication bias, the more hardiness studies should be done.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study aims to provide a fundamental basis for more efficient human resource management of hospitals through career development and through lowering the rate of turnover of nurses. Method: The target group was 370 nurses who are currently employed at four general hospitals. Three hundred and twenty-nine documents were collected, and the statistical results were generated by the SAS program. Result: The average mean score of organizational commitment, career commitment and turnover intention were: 3.13 points for affective commitment, 3.09 points for continuance commitment and 2.92 points for normative commitment, out of a five point scale. The average mean score of career commitment and turnover intention was 2.89 and 3.28 points. The most influential variable in turnover intention was affective commitment out of organizational commitment. Conclusions: This study verified that organizational commitment and career commitment are key variables that could decrease turnover intentions.

  • Utilization practice of garlic and seasonings in industry foodservice was surveyed by questionnaire. Statistical data analysis was performed with SAS package program in order to have frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; The mean value of Food Processing Index(FPI) score for purchased vegetable and seasonings is 3.5 which indicates the prepreparation is between partially preprepared and completely preprepared. The garlic was mainly purchased from brokers(51.0%), on a daily basis(58.8%) and peeled-form(74.5%). The average purchased amount is 6.66㎏ at a time. The unit price of the garlic makes significant differences(p<0.05) by the scale and location of foodservice establishments. As for the storage method and Period, in room temperature, no storage(2.1%) and for one day(2.1%) and in refrigeration, for one day(39.6%) and fer three days(18.7%).

  • This study is concerned with the loading problems in flexible manufacturing system(FMS). The loading problem in FMS is a complex one, when the number of machine and job is increased. It may be time-consuming and even impossible to achieve an optimal solution about this problem mathematically. Thus, a heuristic method is recommended in order to gain near-optimal solutions in a practically acceptable time. A new loading algorithm is developed with a multi-criterion objective of considering the workload unbalance, and maximizing the machine utilization, throughput for critical resources such as the number of tool slots and the number of working hours in a scheduling period and so on. The results of SAS analysis indicated that true average throughput of proposed heuristic loading statistically exceeds that of Shanker and Srinivasulus loading algorithm at the significance level of 0.1.

Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 212 female university students. The data was collected using questionnaires from October to December, 2003 and analyzed t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficients using SAS. Result: The subjects with difficulties in bowel elimination were 57.6% and there was a significant negative correlation between health promotion behavior and constipation. Conclusion: Data from this study suggest that constipation is an important health problem among female university students and needs further research to understand factors related to constipation.

Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 96 patients with arthritis. The data was analyzed ANOVA. Duncan test. Pearson Correlation Coefficients using SAS. Result: Pain showed significant differences according to depression(F=8.12, p=0.001), self efficacy(F=11.52, p<.000) and not significant differences family support(F=0.34, p=0.714). There was a significant negative correlation between family support and depression(r=-.48, p<.000), depression and self efficacy(r=-.41, p<.000). Conclusion: Therefore, for the management of arthritis patient it is required continuous self-management and proper program on self-efficacy promotion.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to detect the correlations and the main factors influencing depression, life satisfaction, burden, defenition of suffering, meaning of life, and suffering. Method: The samples were composed of 160 cancer patients who were or outpatients of four hospitals in Seoul. The reliability of the 6 instruments was tested with Cronbach's alpha which ranged from .62 to .90. The data was analyzed using a SAS program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The results were as follows: 1. The scores on the suffering scale ranged from 132 to 40 with a mean of 87.3 (SD 17.5). 2. There were significant correlations between all the predictive variables and even the amounts of suffering (r=.27-.84, p〈.05). 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that depression was the main predictor of suffering, and accounted for 71.6% of the variance. In addition burden accounted for 4.6% of the variance in suffering. The two variables combined to account for 76.2% of the variance in suffering. Conclusion: In conclusion and depression, burden were identified as important variables in explaining the suffering of patients with cancer.
