  • A circular cylinder is oscillated in th otherwise quiescent viscous fluid. Numerical analysis performed for this problem by using the fourth-order Runge-kutta method for the unsteady Navier-stokes equations. For K(Kelegan-Carpenter's No.)=5, the flow developed symmetrically, while for K=10, it revealed random patterns. The coefficient of the rms force is overestimated by 20-30% compared with the experimental result.

  • In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.

  • Pneumatic cushioning cylinders are commonly employed for vibration and shock control. A mathematical simulation model of a double acting pneumatic cushioning cylinder designed to absorb shock loads is presented which is based on the following assumptions; ideal equation of state isentropic flow through a port conservation of mass polytropic thermodynamics single degree of freedom piston dynamics and energy equivalent linear damping. These differential equation can be solved through numerical integration using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. An experimental study was conducted to validate the results obtained by the numerical integra-tion technique. Simulated results show good agreement with experimental data. The computer simulation model presented here has been extremely useful not only in understanding the has been extremely useful not only in understanding the basic cushioning but also in evaluating different designs.

  • This paper studies the problem of an infinite confined aquifer which at time t < 0 is assumed motionless. At time t = 0 crude oil seeps into the aquifer, thereby contaminating the valuable drinking water. Since the crude oil and water are im-miscible, the problem is posed as a one-dimensional two-phase unsteady moving boundary problem. A similarity solution is developed in which the moving front parameter is obtained by Newton-Ralphson iteration. A numerical scheme, involving the front tracking method, is devised employing the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. Comparison of the exact and numerical schemes shows an error of only 3%. Thus the developed numerical scheme is quite accurate in tackling more realistic problems where exact solutions are not possible.

  • We carry out a numerical calculation to understand the nonlinear wave deformation around breakwaters using the Boussinesq equation, which is weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive shallow water equation. A numerical method based on a finite element scheme and fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithm is employed to investigate the diffraction of incident waves by the breakwater. As a computational model, two-dimensional wave flume is treated. The breakwaters is perpendicular to the side wall of a channel. From the numerical results, the wave deformations according to the change of the length and the thickness of breakwaters are investigated. We also investigate the effect of the nonlinearity by comparing the results with the linear solutions.

  • Viscous analysis on incompressible flows is performed using unstructured triangular meshes. A two-dimensional and axisymmetric incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in time-marching form by artificial compressibility method. The governing equations are discretized by a cell-centered based finite-volume method. and a centered scheme is used for inviscid and viscous fluxes with fourth order artificial dissipation. An explicit multi-stage Runge-Kutta method is used for the time integration with local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing. Convergence properties are examined and solution accuracies are also validated with benchmark solution and experiment.

  • We consider a model of population dynamics whose mortality function is unbounded. We note that the regularity of the solution depends on the growth rate of the mortality near the maximum age. We propose Gauss-Legendre methods along the characteristics to approximate the solution when the solution is smooth enough. It is proven that the scheme is convergent at fourth-order rate in the maximum norm. We also propose discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods to approximate the solution which is not smooth enough. The stability of the method is discussed. Several numerical examples are presented.

  • A numerical method for determining the temperature vartiation in a natural gas transmission line is presented. By considering an element of the gas pipeline and assuming radially lumped heat transfer at steady-state conditions, the energy equation is developed. The integration of the developed nonlinear differential equation is done numerically using the fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme. The results of the present study have been compared with the results of Coulter equations, and show a fairly good agreement.

  • The screech tone of an underexpanded jet is numerically calculated without any specific modeling for the screech tone itself. A fourth-order optimized compact scheme and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are used to solve the 2D axisymmetric Euler equation. The Fourier transform of pressure signal at upstream shows the directivity pattern of the screech tone very clearly. Pressure signal is shown to observe the generation of the screech tone. Most importantly, we can simulate the axisymmetric mode change of the screech tone very precisely with the proposed method. It can be concluded that the basic phenomenon of the screech tone including its frequency can be calculated and its mode change can be simulated with inviscid Euler equations.
