The helicopter rotor system generates lift, thrust, maneuvering force and moment to the helicopter with the torque and pitch control force transferred from the main rotor hub/control. And the tail rotor system generates the thrust for yaw axis control of the helicopter with the torque and pitch control force transferred from the tail rotor hub/control. Ground whirl test shall be performed to verify the compliance of requirement performance test and dynamic test of rotor blade and hub/control. This paper describes a design of whirl tower test facility for helicopter rotor system test and evaluation. Design results are summarized and compared with design requirements.
The Canard rotor/wing (CRW) aircraft concepts offer great potential for application by allowing the use of a common propulsion system for high-speed cruise and low-speed powered lift. Using the rotor for lift in both flight modes increases its utility. In the hovering mode, the exhausted gas from an gas turbine engine is accelerated through the duct system and it provides the tipjet power for rotor system enough to lift the aircraft. In the cruise mode, the rotor is fixed and the exhausted gas is extracted through the main nozzle, such that the aircraft is able to flight with high speed. The duct system was designed using 1-D fanno line flow theory and empirical data. However, the empirical data of the pressure loss coefficient for various bending and dividing ducts were not enough to design our duct system adaptively. Therefore, using 3-D CFD analysis we obtained the pressure loss coefficient for our duct models and chose the appropriate bending or diving duct type. In this paper, we used the CFD-ACE+ software package for the CFD analysis and the modeling of duct system. Through the 3-D CFD analysis, we investigated also the pressure loss and the velocity distributions of the designed whole duct system as well as the blade duct. Comparing the 3-D CFD result with 1-D analysis result, we lessened the uncertainty of the designed duct system and speculated the problem that was not concerned in design state.
To validate the rotor performance analysis, 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) analysis was performed for tilt rotor aeroacoustic model(TRAM). Also, 3D vehicle with rotating rotors was simulated for rotor power effect analysis. Multiple reference frame(MRF) and sliding mesh techniques were implemented to capture the effect of rotor revolution. CFD results were compared with the wind tunnel test results to validate their accuracy. At helicopter mode, CFD analysis predicted lower thrust than the wind tunnel test but CFD results showed good agreement with the test result at cruise mode. Rotor power effect decreased the lift but did not change drag and pitching moment.

In this paper, Fly robot with electric power, a kind of Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is considered as an autonomous hovering platform, capable of vertical lift-off, landing and stationary hovering. This aircraft has four rotor and DC motors of electrical Power, which is capable of omni-direction for indoor application. In the earlier days of vertical flight experimentation developers looked at the intuitively easy control functionality of 4 rotor designs. But we need to obtain design method of suitable structures and adequate components because the existing prototypes of 4 rotor-craft don't analyze the propeller, motor characteristic and propose a methodology to optimize this system. In this paper, we will show the new 4 rotor craft with blimp, analyze design and manufacturing method of 4 rotor craft system. Also we prove propriety of our design and manufacturing method by being based on thrust and motor experiment.

Lift Fan Engines of JAXA's conceptual Jet VTOL aircraft have a very small bellmouse shape air intake, which make some differences in aerodynamic design of the blades. To obtain a better rotor or stator blade design, this paper performs a numerical analysis of the throughflow on a lift fan as a two-dimensional axisymmetrical flow. Based on the last report focusing on the air intake's influence on the throughflow, a more realistic bellmouse air intake case is treated to reconsider the influence on the throughflow by the small bellmouse air intake. Three work input patterns are tested to reduce some problematic influences on the throughflow or blade designs. The obtained result shows one of acceptable blade designs for the lift fan engine.
This study is to develop a 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor blade which will be applicable to relatively low wind speed regions in southwest islands in Korea. Shape design of 1kW-class small wind turbine rotor blade is carried out using a blade profile with relatively high lift to drag ratio by blade element momentum theory(BEMT). Aerodynamic analysis on the newly designed rotor blade is performed with the variation of tip speed ratio. Power coefficient and pressure coefficient of the designed rotor blade are investigated according to tip speed ratio.
A turbine stage consists of a stator and rotor. A stator provides the required inlet flow conditions so that a rotor can produce the necessary power. Passing wakes generated at the trailing edge of a stator make an interaction with a rotor. In the present study, this interaction flow mechanism is investigated using the numerical analysis. In case of the large gap distance between the stator and rotor, the stator and rotor flow analysis can be separated. First, only the stator flow field is solved. Second, the rotor flow field is solved including the passing wake information from the stator analysis. The passing wake experiences the shearing as it approaches to the rotor leading edge. And it is chopped when it strikes the rotor body. After that, the chopped wakes becomes the prolongation as it goes downstream. Also, the aerodynamic characteristics with the variation of the gap distance between a stator and rotor was investigated. Pressure jumps due to the passing wakes result in the pressure and lift loss and it gets stronger with the closer gap distance. This unsteady effect proves to be directly related to the fatigue and noise in turbomachinery and this study would be helpful to investigate such fields.

To achieve the advanced forward flight performance of helicopter, the passive control methods for enhancement of the dynamic stall characteristics of rotor blades are studied. To enhance the dynamic stall characteristics of the rotor blades, it is essential to improve the lift performance and the pitching moment performance simultaneously with the control of the separation on the rotor blades. For this point of view, both the fixed droop leading edge and the Gurney flap which are simply realized are used for control of the dynamic stall in severe dynamic stall conditions. From this study, the combination of both passive control methods showed dramatic enhancement of lift and pitching moment performance in dynamic stall than previous research results.

This present paper leads to investigation of blade-fluid interactions of cambered blade H-Darrieus rotor having EN0005 airfoil blades using comprehensive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to understand its performance in low wind streams. For several blade azimuthal angle positions, the effects of three different low wind speeds are studied regarding their influence on the blade-fluid interactions of the EN0005 blade rotor. In the prevailing studies by various researchers, such CFD analysis of H-Darrieus rotors are very less, hence it is needed to improve their steady-state performance in low wind velocities. Such a study is also important to obtain important performance insights of such thin cambered blade rotor in its complete rotational cycle. It has been seen that the vortex generated at the suction side of the EN0005 blade rolls back to its leading edge due to the camber of the blade and thus a peak velocity occurs near to the nose position of this blade at its leading edge, which leads to peak performance of this rotor. Again, in the returning phase of the blade, a secondary recirculating vortex is generated that acts on the pressure side of EN0005 blade rotor that increases the performance of this cambered EN0005 blade rotor in its downstream position as well. Here, the aerodynamic performances have been compared considering Standard k-ε and SST k-ω models to check the better suited turbulence model for the cambered EN0005 blade H-Darrieus rotor in low tip speed ratios.

A study on the speed limit and sizing of auxiliary fixed-wing of compound gyroplane was performed. The performance of the plane that uses the same rotor system and power of BO-105 helicopter was compared with that of BO-105 helicopter. The wing area which is used to compensate in lift, was calculated considering the aerodynamic characteristics and lift sharing ratio of the rotor. Achievable flight speeds were observed for two types of fuselage; BO-105 and streamlined bodies. The study showed that the autorotating rotor can share 1/2 of lift at high speed and the parasite power of compound gyroplane having streamlined body and small wing can be minimized, accordingly it can fly faster than helicopter with airspeed more than twice.
