  • The noise sources of a tip-jet driven rotor can be separated by rotor blade noise and jet noise. The rotor blade noise consists of thickness noise, loading noise, nonlinear quadrupole noise, and jet noise is divided into nozzle momentum noise and jet radiation noise. The flow analysis for the prediction of rotor blade noise is performed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, and the noise source of the rotor blade noise is identified by simultaneously applying the permeable and impermeable surface based FW-H (Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings) acoustic analogy. The nozzle momentum noise is obtained by permeable surface FW-H, and jet radiation noise is predicted by using empirical method for the fixed-wing jet. Both of jet noises use nozzle exit condition for noise analysis. The accuracy of the technique is verified based on the noise measurements of the tip-jet driven rotor, and the unique noise characteristics of the tip-jet driven rotor is confirmed by spectrum analysis.

  • Experiments are performed to consider the ground effects on unsteady loading and acoustic generation. Partially inclined plate is used to maximize the unsteadiness of the rotor. Indirect method to recognize the unsteady effect is used by measuring the noise in the normal direction from the rotor plane. The experiment is conducted with a square plate of about $9m^2$ and one half of the plate is placed parallel with the rotor plane and the other half is inclined. The height of the plate and the angle of the inclined plate can be changed. Helicopter noise is also measured at the 4 different positions to study the directivity of the rotor noise. The distance between microphone and rotor hub is 1.3m. Tonal noise and broad band noise are measured and analyzed. Thickness noise, steady loading noise and unsteady loading noise are investigated from the rotor noise measurement.

  • The Helicopter noise analysis code was developed using Farassat's Formular 1A based on Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation and Lowson's Formula which contains single loading noise source concept. HART-II(Higher harmonic control Aeroacoustic Rotor Test), STAR(Smart-Twisting Active Rotor) and Active-tab Rotor were computed and analyzed by using developed noise code. The results of these rotor noise prediction are explained and its applicability would be mentioned in this paper.

  • Helicopter noise has been considered as one of major design factors like a performance and safety since the public acceptance, comfortability and stealth aspects were important for customers. According to the airworthiness regulation, the noise levels in throe different flight conditions shall comply with the specific limits. Main and tail rotors noise is most dominant in far field due to the low and mid range frequency characteristics. It is an air-born noise so That the accurate aerodynamic data is necessary for the accurate noise prediction. In KARI, low noise main and tail rotors as well as analysis codes have been developed since 2000. The approach for low noise main rotor is a kind of tip modifications, so called twin vortices tip to reduce the BVI noise. Analysis results show the 9.3dB reduction in terms of pseudo EPNL. The uneven spacing concept is applied for low noise tail rotor. Three or four decibel noise reduction is achieved by new optimized uneven spacing. Rotor noise and aerodynamic prediction codes have been improved also.

  • The purpose of the paper is to investigate the effects of design parameters on the noise of a rotor- bearing system supported in oil lubricated journal bearings. Effects of radial clearance and width of the bearing, lubricant viscosity and mass eccentricity of the rotor are also examined. Numerical results of the parametric studies are summarized through graph for the A-weighted sound pressure level of the bearing with respect to the rotational speed of the rotor. Results show that the sound pressure level of the bearing is markedly influenced by the mass eccentricity of the rotor and the radial clearance and the width of the bearing. The high viscosity of the lubricant slightly decreases the noise of the bearing, but its effect is relatively very low at high speed. The results of the paper could be an aid in the low noise design of rotor-bearing system supported in oil lubricated journal bearings.

  • The rattle noise originated from the oil-pump system was issued in developing an engine. In this paper, the major concerning factors for rattle noise are analyzed and the NVH developing process is summarized. The main factors are the tip clearance of inner/outer rotor, the clearance between oil pump housing and rotor guide and the rotor mass. Also, the optimization for oil-pump rotor whine noise is performed. The main factors of the rotor whine are the profile of the rotor, the oil pressure and the shape of oil route. This paper will present the design guidelines of the engine oil-pump system.

  • The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the noise and vibration characteristics of externally pressurized air proceeding bearings with a circular slot restrictor. To do this, the nonlinear transient analysis including rotor imbalance was performed for a rotor-bearing system. The effects of radial clearance and the width of the bearing and mass eccentricity of the rotor on the noise and vibration characteristics of the bearing are also examined. The results show that the noise and vibration of the rotor-bearing system first increase up to critical speed of the system, and then decrease up to instability threshold speed of the system as the rotational speed of the rotor increases, and the noise of the bearing is markedly influenced by the mass eccentricity of the rotor and the radial clearance and the width of the bearing.

  • In this paper the aeroacoustic characteristics of a tilt-rotor system is measured by using a sealed model tilt-rotor. With a microphone array system and the do-dopplerization algorithm, the location and the characteristics of rotor noise are successfully measured. The most of high frequency noise (4kHz) is found to be located at rotor blade tips, but the low frequency tonal noise is dominant on the middle of the rotor blades. The measured tonal noise characteristics are compared to the results of theoretical calculation. At 0.5m distance from the rotor plane, measured and calculated data are relatively well matched regardless of rotating speed and collective pitch angie for the azimuthal angles between $0^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$. However, the data on the azimuthal angles between $70^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ are not quite comparable. In addition, the compared data for far-field case (1.5m) are quite different. This is probably due to the unsteady effect which if not included in the theoretical calculation.
