In a co-rotating scroll compressor, both scrolls rotate on their fixed axes contrary to the conventional orbiting type scroll machine. This implies fixed locations and directions of the gas pressure force and sealing force. Because the tilting moment is mainly caused by interplay between the resultant force of above forces and bearing reaction force, the variation during one cycle is relatively small. Under real operation, this moment is balanced by the restoring moment created by the reaction between the baseplate and thrust bearing or between the scroll tip and baseplate. If these reactions become too large, greater torque is required due to increased friction in addition to the wear of mating parts. Consequently, appropriate study and minimization of tilting moment is important in the design of scroll machines. In this study, taking into account of the small variation of tilting moment during one cycle, we minimize the moment and thrust bearing reaction force by a properly designed back pressure chamber. As a result, for both the driving and driven scrolls, the tilting moment and the reaction force of thrust bearing can be minimized. And the stability is improved for all cases.
In this paper, a modeling method for the bending vibration analysis of rotating Timoshenko beams with concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia is presented. The shear and rotary inertia effects become critical for the accurate estimation of the natural frequencies and mode shapes as the slenderness ratio decreases. The natural frequencies obtained by using the Timoshenko beam theory are lower than those by using the Euler beam theory. The critical angular speed, which does not exist only with the concentrated mass, exists with the concentrated mass moment of inertia.
A low-Reynolds-number second moment turbulence closure is improved with the aid of DNS data. For the model coefficients of pressure-strain terms, we adopted Shima's model with some modification. Shin and Choi's new dissipation-rate equation is employed to simulate accurately the turbulence energy dissipation rate distribution in the near wall sublayer. The results of computations are compared with DNS, LES data and experimental data for turbulent plane channel flow with rotation about spanwise axis. The present second moment closure achieves a level of agreement similar to that for the non-rotating. In particular, it accurately captures the distribution of turbulence energy dissipation rate in the near wall region.
A modeling method for the bending vibration analysis of rotating Timoshenko beams with concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia is presented. The shear and rotary inertia effects become critical for the accurate estimation of the natural frequencies and modeshapes as the slenderness ratio decreases. The effect of the concentrated mass and mass moment of inertia on the natural frequencies are also investigated with the modeling method.
The elliptic conceptual second moment model for turbulent heat fluxes, which was proposed on the basis of elliptic-relaxation equation, was applied to calculate the turbulent heat transfer in an axially rotating pipe flow. The model was closely linked to the elliptic blending model which was used for the prediction of Reynolds stress. The effects of rotation on the turbulent characteristics including the mean velocity, the Reynolds stress tensor, the mean temperature and the turbulent heat flux vector were examined by the model. The numerical results by the present model were directly compared to the DNS as well as the experimental results to assess the performance of the model predictions and showed that the behaviors of the turbulent heat transfer in the axially rotating pipe flow were satisfactorily captured by the present models.
A rotating propeller of turboprop aircraft gives much effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of wing such as lift, moment and stall. Specially, a rotating propeller changes the lift and moment characteristics when aircrafts are in landing or take-off condition. In the present paper, 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulations for the interaction of propeller and wing were carried out. For rotating propeller, unsteady sliding mesh method was used to simulate a relative motion. For the power effect analysis in landing and take off configurations, double slotted flap was also considered and the aerodynamic characteristics were investigated. It was shown that the propeller slipstream enhanced the lift slope including maximum lift and this enhancement was more dominant with high lift device.
In this paper, three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamic(CFD) analyses based on overset grid technique have been performed for a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) considering the wake effect generated by a rotating propeller. In addition, the defection of rudder is considered in order to consider to predict the equilibrium condition of yawing moment during cruise flight conditions. It is importantly shown in this paper that the wake interference effect of the propeller is significant to accurately predict the yawing moment of the UAV and the yawing moment coefficient corresponding to a flight speed can be different because of its different amount of wake effect due to the different rotating speed of the propeller.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of rotating unbalance mass on vibration characteristics of the front axle. The power-train systemof the vehicle is composed of several rotating parts. These component parts should be properly balanced by the balancing machine, however, sometimes these have the unbalance mass which causes the critical vibration in the vehicle. Therefore, this study suggests the vibration improvement method based on reducing the unbalance mass through changing the assembly type between the companion flange and the constant velocity joints. In addition, the way to increase the inertia moment of the companion flange was proposed.
Using a flexible rotating beam test bed, experimental verification of a flexible multibody dynamic simulations for a rotating beam model has been carried out. The test bed consists of a flexible arm, harmonic driver reducer, AC servo motor and DSP board with PC. The mechanical ports of the test bed has been designed using 3D CAD program. For the simulation model, mass and moment of inertia of each part of the flexible rotating beam test bed are also obtained from 3D CAD model. In the flexible multibody dynamic simulations, the substructuring model has been established to capture nonlinear effects of the flexible rotating beam. Through the experimental verification, substructuring model provides better results than those from the linear model in the high speed rotation.
A rotating rigid disk, attached on a flexible shaft or supported by a torsional spring, experiences precessional whirling due to gyroscopic moment loading. It is well known in rotor dynamics area that, as the rotational speed increases, the precessional mode of the rotating rigid disk starts splitting into two: forward and backward precessional modes. On the other hand, it is also well known in disk vibration area that a rotating flexible disk also shows another kind of mode splitting phenomenon due to the rotation, resulting in forward and backward traveling waves. When rotating multiple flexible disks are coupled in vibration with the supporting Flexible shaft, the associated mode splitting should be compatible with the two seemingly different vibration analysis methods. This paper investigates the possibility of fusing the precessional and traveling wave mode splittings so that the bending coupled disk vibrations in HDD spindle systems can be better understood.
