  • Heat transfer characteristics in a rotating heat pipe with evaporator of the rotating disc and the condenser of the screwed groove is investigated by numerical method for various dimensionless film thicknesses, Re, C_{p}{\Delta}T/h_{fg}$, rotational speed and working fluids. The temperature difference between evaporator wall and vapor increases a little, but the temperature difference between condenser wall and vapor decreases rapidly as Re increases. As the dimensionless film thickness decreases, the temperature difference of evaporator and condenser decreases. As the rotational speed increases, the temperature difference between evaporator wall and vapor increases but the temperature difference between condenser wall and vapor decreases. The Nusselt number can be shown as a function of dimensionless film thickness and Re, that is $Nu=0.963\cdot(\delta^{-1}(\omega/\vpsilon)^{-1/2}{\cdot}Re^{0.5025})$.

  • In this study, the vibration characteristics were theoretically analyzed by modeling a free isotropic rotating disk with an outer periphery with a fixed inner periphery, paying attention to disks used as storage devices for information devices, especially magnetic disks, magneto-optical disks, and compact disks in which the head and disk are non-contact. Iluminate with Composite materials represented by fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) have high specific strength (strength/density) and specific stiffness (narrowness/density). It is used in the elements, and its use is rapidly expanding. Under this circumstance, the disk currently manufactured using an isotropic material made of various plastic materials such as aluminum or polycarbonate as a base material is an extremely anisotropic material made of a composite material, and the circumferential stiffness of the disk is made of reinforcing fibers in the circumferential direction. It is modeled as an anisotropic rotating disk with increased, and its influence on the vibration characteristics is revealed.

  • Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.

  • The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity component and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), and the flow patterns induced by rotating disc in the ODD are calculated by a commercial finite volume method at the same time. The results show that the front holes reduce flow-induced noise and the position of pickup body only affects flow near the window. Furthermore, it is possible for cooling of heat sources in the drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray. In addition, the numerical results are well matched up to the experimental results, therefore, the validation of the numerical results can be achieved. From the validation of numerical results, it is possible to predict the flow characteristics of the region where it is unable to conduct the experiment.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of a multi-packet blade system having tapered cross section undergoing rotational motion is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as tapered cantilever beams that are fixed to a rotating disc. The stiffness coupling effects between blades due to the flexibilities of the disc and the shroud are modeled with discrete springs. Hybrid deformation variables are employed to derive the equations of motion. To obtain more general information, the equations of motion are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters including tapered ratio and the number of packets as well as blades on the modal characteristics of the system are investigated with some numerical examples.

  • The problems for non-rotating of a disc cutter proceed from the faults in inner parts of the disc cutter such as the leak of hydraulic fluid, the intrusion of tunnel mucks and water, overloading, overheating, poor assembly and substandard material. The rotating of a disc cutter is an indicator to show that the inner parts of disc cutter is operable, although the rotational torque depends on the extent of the damage. Therefore, the key in the problems for non-rotating of disc cutter is to maintain that the tapered roller bearings are working properly. This study aims to investigate the inner parts disassembled from disc cutters applied to the field tests in order to help decision for reuse of the disc cutters. As results, surface finishing to remove the scratch on the load zone of the hubs is needed, with the intent to reuse a hub. And the investigation of lapping surface by optical microscope of floating seals and the contamination test of oil need to be performed for reuse of a disc cutter. Especially, the analysis results show that the floating seals play a key role in the normal operation of bearings. There is nothing significant to report in the rest parts such as bearing, shaft, seal retainers.

  • The electrochemical behaviors of various metals with and without diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were investigated. The effect of hydrodynamic conditions was focused by employing a rotating disc electrode (RDE). The experimental results showed that each bare metal had a more positive corrosion potential and a higher corrosion rate due to enhanced oxygen transport at the higher rotating speed of the RDE. DLC coating caused a substantial increase in the corrosion resistance of all metals studied. However, localized corrosion was still found in the DLC-coated metal at sites where deposition defects existed. Surface morphology examination was performed after the electrochemical test to confirm the roles of hydrodynamic conditions and DLC coating.

  • 7XXX aluminum alloy powders produced by the self-manufactured rotating disc atomizer were investigated to determine the influence of the atomization parameters on the particle size distributions in air atmosphere. The particle size distributions are almost always bimodal with the dominant mode on the large particle size. Average powder size of 7XXX aluminum alloy is $74/{\mu}m~125/{\mu}m$ when melt is poured with the rate of 9g /sec at 730$^{\circ}C$ on a rotating disc of 30㎜ diameter at 6300rad/sec. The mass of finer particle increased when disc diameter, angular velocity, pouring temperature increased and pouring rate decreased. The powder shapes of bimodal change from acicular to tear-drop and from tear-drop to ligament with increasing powder size. Powder shape was determined by the atomization mechanism and oxidation in liquid state. Microstructure of powders appeared to be cell and cellular dendrite. The SDAS of Al-7.9wt%Zn-2.4wt%Mg-1.5wt%Cu-0.9wt%Ni Powders is $0.8{\mu}m~1.0{\mu}m$ for the powders of $size+44{\mu}m~53{\mu}m$ and $1.6{\mu}m∼1.8{\mu}m$ for the powders of $size+105{\mu}m~125{\mu}m$, repectively.

  • An innovative inertial reactive armor is being developed through a multi-discipline project. Unlike the well-known explosive or non-explosive reactive armour that uses high-energy explosives or bulging effect, the proposed inertial reactive armour uses active disc elements that is set to rotate rapidly upon impact to effectively deflect and disrupt shaped charges and kinetic energy penetrators. The effectiveness of the proposed armour highly depends on the tangential velocity of the impact point on the rotating disc. However, for a single layer armour with an array of high-speed rotating discs, the tangential velocity is relatively low near the center of the disc and is not available between the gap of the discs. Therefore, it is necessary to configure the armor with double layers to increase the tangential velocity at the point of impact. This paper explores a multi-objective geometry design optimization for the double-layered armor using Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm and integration tools of the python programming language. The optimization objectives include maximizing both average tangential velocity and high tangential velocity areas and minimizing low tangential velocity area. The design parameters include the relative position (translation and rotation) of the disc element between two armor layers. The optimized design results in a significant increase of the average tangential velocity (38%), increase of the high tangential velocity area (71.3%), and decrease of the low tangential velocity area (86.2%) as comparing to the single layer armor.
