  • Single phase voltage source converter (VSC) is an important power electronic converter (PEC), including single-phase voltage source inverter (VSI), single-phase voltage source rectifier (VSR), single-phase active power filter (APF) and single-phase grid-connection inverter (GCI). As the fundamental part of large scale PECs, single-phase VSC has a wide range of applications. In the paper, as first, on the basis of the concept of the discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) for three-phase VSC, a new DPWM of single-phase VSR is presented by means of zero-sequence component injection. Then, the transformation from stationary frame (abc) to rotating frame (dq) is designed after reconstructing the other orthogonal current by means of one order all-pass filter. Finally, the presented DPWM based single-phase VSR is established analyzed and simulated by means of MATLAB/SIMULINK. In addition, the DPWMs presented by D. Grahame Holmes and Thomas Lipo are discussed and simulated in brief. Obviously, the presented DPWM can also be used for single-phase VSI, GCI and APF. The simulation results show the validation of the above modulation algorithm, and the DPWM based single-phase VSR has reduced power loss and increased efficiency.

  • To numerically simulate aerodynamics of rotor-airframe interaction in a rigorous manner, we need to solve the Navier-Stokes system for a rotor-airframe combination in a single computational domain. This imposes a computational burden since rotating blades and a stationary body have to be simultaneously dealt with. An efficient alternative is a momentum source method in which the action of rotor is approximated as momentum source in a stationary mesh system built around the airframe. This makes the simulation much easier. The magnitude of the momentum source is usually evaluated by the blade element theory, which often results in a poor accuracy. In the present work, we evaluate the momentum source from the simulation data by using the Navier-Stokes equations only for a rotor system. Using this data, we simulated the time-averaged steady rotor-airfame interaction and developed the unsteady rotor-airframe interaction. Computations were carried out for the simplified rotor-airframe model (the Georgia Tech configuration) and the results were compared with experimental data. The results were in good agreement with experimental data, suggesting that the present approach is a usefull method for rotor-airframe interaction analysis.

  • Electric motors and drives consume the largest amount of electricity more than 40% of global electricity consumption. In addition, motors, drives and its components are included in the global high-trade products and the main driving source for industrial equipment and house appliances. Thus, International standards and regulations for their safety and efficiency are internationally being discussed and created for the protection of its citizens and energy saving. So, understanding the international standards and the regulation of each country is essential to enhance overseas market and to develop product. In this paper, on the basis of this background, status and trends of international standards and regulations are introduced for safety and efficiency of motors and the drives. Safety and efficiency of the IEC (International Electrotechical Commission) standards are introduced in the emphasis. Also, regulations are studied about the differences and trends in each county.

  • The elliptic relaxation model(ERM) with the inhomogeneous correction intermediate between near wall with and far from the wall. The source of the ERM usually was appled quasi-homogeneous pressure-strain correlation in homogeneous situations. This formulation was easily applied to the linear model or non-linear pressure-strain model. It is observed that the boundary conditions of the relaxation operator dominate the homogeneous pressure-strain model in the near wall region. While looking at high-Reynolds number flows, it was found necessary to modify the effect of the relaxation operator throughout the log region by accounting for gradients of the flatness variable and turbulent length scales. These effects are kinematic blocking of the wall normal velocity fluctuation and pressure reflections from the surface. This model is wall distances and unit vectors which make the model applicable to flows boundary by a complex geometry. Inhomogeneous correction model is computed inertial and non-inertial channel flow These are compared DNS(Kim et at., Kristofffrsen & Andersson) for channel flow. The present model could be predicted well for rotating flows.

  • The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity component and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), and the flow patterns induced by rotating disc in the ODD are calculated by a commercial finite volume method at the same time. The results show that the front holes reduce flow-induced noise and the position of pickup body only affects flow near the window. Furthermore, it is possible for cooling of heat sources in the drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray. In addition, the numerical results are well matched up to the experimental results, therefore, the validation of the numerical results can be achieved. From the validation of numerical results, it is possible to predict the flow characteristics of the region where it is unable to conduct the experiment.

  • When a vibration data for a rotating machine such as a pump or a compressor is concerned, the frequency fluctuation of the energy contents at an instant time may provide useful information on understanding the vibration characteristics of the rotating machinery, rather than the averaged energy distribution along the frequency axis. Especially, when a periodic signal has different spectral contents, the approach to use the averaged frequency distribution, called the normal frequency analysis, may not be appropriate to extract vibration source characteristics of the structure. This paper introduces a way to analyze the signal based on an instant time. In order to evaluate the performance of the various approach, the investigatation compares three different algorithms which are frequently implemented in the instantaneous frequency analysis. Also for the noise effect embodied in the true signal, various cases for different SN ratio have been examined. The result shows that the noise level is crucial to evalute the instantaneous frequency analysis. In order to implement the instantaneous frequency analysis, the extraction of the relevant information from the measured signal should have the high S/N ratio, i, e., 40 dB or above.

  • Recently, commercial ships and other specialized vessels with electric propulsion system employ variable speed induction motor as its prime mover. The wide application of electrical motors also includes being the main drive system in most industrial machineries. However, during its start-up, shutdown, and brake switch operation, excessive torque variation are generated. As such, flexible coupling are installed in order to reduce the transmitted torque fluctuation to the driven side. In this paper, the pulse torque generated by an variable speed induction motor was analyzed theoretically and through measurement of torsional vibration. Induction motor with inverter on marine propulsion system and industrial compressor were used as experimental subjects. The study confirmed that pulse torque are generated regardless of motor speed and interpreted as a vibration source of the whole system. Results presented herein can be adopted as the basis in future amendment of inspection classifying body regulations.

  • This paper investigates the abnormal noise of polygon mirror scanner motor due to the mechanical contact. In the high speed polygon mirror scanner motor the vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor is one of the main sources of abnormal noise, because structure-borne noise due to the vibration is bigger than aerodynamic noise, especially when the rotating part contacts the stationary parts. This research determines the main harmonics of structure-borne noise by using sound quality evaluation. It also develops an experimental set-up to measure the mechanical contact and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor simultaneously. This paper also show that mechanical contact between rotating shaft and stationary sleeve is one of the dominant vibration sources of structure-borne noise which cause the abnormal noise of the high speed polygon mirror scanner motor by using the developed experimental set-up.

  • The vacuum cleaner that has no dust bag generates very high level annoying noise. The dominant noise source is the 2$\^$nd/ BPF tone of the rotating impeller. In order to reduce the noise, we identify the acoustic characteristics and reduce the noise of the vacuum cleaner and centrifugal fan. The resonance phenomenon is observed in blade passages and we found out that the resonance frequency is very close to the 2$\^$nd/ BPF. In order to reduce this high-level peak noise, new impeller is designed in this paper. The trailing edge of new impeller is inclined and this makes the flow interactions between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser vane occurs with some phase shift. The performance of new impeller is similar to the old one but the overall SPL is reduced about 3.6dBA. The SPL of BPF is reduced about 6dBA and 2$\^$nd/ BPF is reduced about 20dBA. The vacuum cleaner, which uses newly developed centrifugal fan, generate more comfortable noise than the old model and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • In this paper, the air flow induced by the rotating flat disk is numerically investigated in a hope to better understand the air flow structures inside the wax spin coater for a silicon wafer polishing station. Due to the complex inner geometry of actual spin coater such as the casing around the rotating ceramic block and servo motor, recirculation of air flow is inevitably found on the coating target if the internal space of spin coater is closed at the bottom and it could be the possible source of contamination on the wax coating. By numerical flow simulation, we found that it is necessary to install the air vent at the bottom and to apply the sufficient air suction in order to control the path of air flow and to eliminate the air recirculation zone above the spinning surface of coating target.
