This study was carried out to understand the effects of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen manufactured by different production process and Rosa rugosa on blood sugar in the db/db mice. Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen(L-BCL, H-BCL) manufactured by low or high temperature production process and Rosa rugosa were used. The effects of L-BCL, L-BCL+Rosa rugosa, H-BCL and H-BCL+Rosa rugosa were observed in terms of blood sugar, creatinine, BUN, ALT in db/db mice. The results were as follows : The amount of glucose was significantly decreased (P<0.01) in the experimental groups compared with the control. The amount of Creatinine ovserved decrease in the case of L-BCL group. The amount of blood urea nitrogen observed significant decrease in the case of H-BCL and H-BCL+Rosa rugosa groups. The amount of ALT did not show any differences among five groups.
From the Roots of Rosa rugosa Thunb., which were used for diabetes as folkloric remedy, quercetin was isolated and identified by chemical spectral analysis and direct comparison with authentic sample.
From the underground parts of Rosa rugosa(Rosaceae), 28-0-glucosides of euscaphic acid, tormentic acid and arjunic acid were isolated and characterized by spectral data.
Five phenolic compounds have been isolated from the stems and leaves of Rosa rugosa Thunb. (Rosaceae) in Korea. They were methyl gallate and catechin from the stems, and quercetin, methyl gallate and hyperin from the leaves respectively. The structures were established by spectroscopic and chemical methods.
Lipid lowering properties from three plant water extracts, Rosa rugosa, Crataegus pinnatifida and Polygonum cuspidatum, were tested by supplementing a 1% high-cholesterol diet with them in rats. Plasma triglyceride levels in Rosa fugosa, Crataegus pinnatifida and Polygonum cuspidatum groups were significantly lower compared to that of the control. by 29% , 24% and 47% respectively. hepatic trigylceride levels in Rosa rugosa and Crataegus pinnatifida groups were significantly lower compared to the control by 11% and 15% respectively. Hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity in Rosa rugosa group was significantly greater compared to the control by 406%. Hepatic ACAT activity was significantly lower in Polygonum cuspidatum group compared to the control by 28%. by multiple regression results, only plasma cholesterol was associated significantly (p<0.05) with liver HMG-CoA reductase activity. Plasma cholesterol explained 12% of thevariance of the liver HMG-CoA redctase activity. In conclusion, we have showen that hot water extracts from Rosa rugosa, Crataegus pinnatifida and Polygonum cuspidatum lowered plasma triglycerides in rats fed on a high-cholesterol diet. Data suggests that these extracts could potentially prevent or treat hypertriglyceridemia induced by a high fat diet and fatty liver.
Objectives : This study has been carried out to investigate the effects of the Saengjinyanghyutang-gamibang and Rosa rugosa extracts on pancreas of the hyperglycemia mice induced with streptozotocin. Methods : We examined immunohistochemistry for insulin and COX-2, ultrastructural changes of acini by electron microscope, and changes of the blood glucose and BUN levels. Results : The ${\beta}-cells$ on Langerhnan's islet were destructed by administration of streptozotocin, so that few insulin-positive cells were observed in the control group. However, a lot of insulin-positive cells were observed in the experimental groups. These cells had recovered from the damage. As a result of COX-2 immunostain, COX-2 expression were highest in the control group other than the Saengjinyanghyutang-gamibang and Rosa rugosa extracts administered groups. As the electron microscopical observation, the centroacinar cells and acini of pancreas were destructed or damaged by administration of streptozotocin in the control group, but these recovered !Tom the damage in the other experimental groups. The levels of serum glucose were decreased remarkably on the Rosa rugosa and Saengjinyanghyutang-gamibang extracts administered groups compared with control group. Conclusions : These results suggest that administration of the Rosa rugosa and Saengjinyanghyultang-gamibang extracts to the mice reduced the damage induced by streptozotocin.
This study was undertaken to evaluate the gastrotherapeutic effects of the extract of Rosa rugosa. It can be regarded that the antigastric and anti-ulcerative effect of Rosa rugosa is originated from the reduction of total acid output identified by gastric secretion test. To clarify the protective mechanism of the Rosa rugosa extract, the gastropathy was induced in rats with alcohol-salicylate and the activities of the free radical scavenging enzymes were examined. The acitivity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxide were significantly increased and the total content of glutathione was recovered. We concluded that the protective effect of the extract of Rosa rugosa on gastropathy in rats is its ability increased the activities of the free radical scavenging enzymes.
In the present study, we investigated biological activities of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves in order to evaluate the possibility as a natural biomaterial. The 80% ethanol extract and its subsequent fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves were prepared using several solvents with different polarities. The extraction yield was 33.4, 36.6, 25.2, 18.7, 5.8 and 5.8% in ethanol extract, aqueous, butanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, chloroform fractions, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction (661.38 mg/g), butanol fraction (396.68 mg/g) and 80% ethanolic extract (239.54 mg/g) has higher total polyphenol contents than other fractions. The antioxidant activity was detected in ethanolic extract, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest levels of DPPH radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$, $4.77{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). Moreover, the ethyl acetate fraction significantly inhibited production of NO in LPS-stimulated macrophage RAW 264.7 cells without cytotoxicity. These results indicate that 80% ethanol extract and its fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaf, especially ethyl acetate fraction, have the properties of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation, suggesting leaf of Rosa davurica Pall. may be a candidate for natural and functional materials.
Nitric oxide (NO) has been suggested to play an important role in endotoxin-mediated shock and inflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of Rosa laevigata Michx. (Rosaceae) on the production of NO and the molecular mechanism of its action. Rosa laevigata inhibited NO generation and iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated murine macrophages. Activity of nuclear $factor{-\kappa}B\;(NF{-\kappa}B)$ and the degradation of $I{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$ were suppressed by Rosa laevigata. Furthermore, extracellular signal-stimulated kinase (ERK), which is known to be involved in $NF{-\kappa}B$ activation, is inhibited by Rosa laevigata. These results suggest that Rosa laevigata could exert its anti-inflammatory actions by suppressing the synthesis of NO through inhibition of $NF{-\kappa}B$ activity.
