  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on growth and yield of taro in different degree of activated charcoal concentration. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Stem length was shown the longest in activated charcoal of 10%∼20% , but shorter in control. Also stem diameter was shown the thickest in activated charcoal of 10%∼20%, but thinner in control. Length and thickness of main root and thickness of main root were good in activated charcoal of 10∼20% Quality and yield of taro was the highest in activated charcoal of 10∼20% . Therefore, optimum consistency of activated charcoal was 10∼20%.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of fertilizer application amounts on the root yield and the available constituents contents in root of Scutellaria baicalensis George. The baicalin contents decreased when nitrogen was applied at 18Kg/10a, but were not effected by P and K application. The contents of fructose, glucose and sucrose increased as applying P nutrient, but decreased with N application. The contents of ash, ethanol extract were not effected by fertilizer application, but acid-insoluble ash contents decreased as the N and P application increased. The root yield increased when nitrogen and potassium were applied at 12Kg/10a and 6Kg/10a, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of root zone restriction on yield and quality of muskmelon. Three cultivation methods, isolated bench, root zone restriction sheet(RZR sheet) and conventional soil culture, were compared from April 19th to July 17th. Soil temperature was higher at isolated bench and the growth of melon was accelerated at isolated bench compared to soil culture or RZR sheet. Fruit size was bigger in order of soil culture, isolated bench and RZR sheet, while sugar content and net shape were greatest at isolated bench, and the percentage of wilted plant was 3.3% at isolated bench, 25.0% at RZR sheet and 26.7% at soil culture. Therefore, marketable yield was higher at isolated bench compared to conventional soil culture.

  • Physiological disorders such as symptoms in leaf colored with brown spots are so many occurred in ginseng garden cultivated with paddy soil. This study was carried out to inhibit the symptoms of brown-colored leaf in 3-year-old ginseng by fertilizing calcium hydroxide [$Ca(OH)_2$] of 100 ~ 400 kg per 10a on paddy soil before transplant of seedling. Soil pH was rapidly increased, while Fe was decreased in soil by the increase of application level of calcium hydroxide. Soil pH was increased from 4.53 to 6.18 when calcium hydroxide was fertilized at level of 100kg per 10a. The content of Fe in ginseng leaf was decreased more than the control by fertilizing calcium hydroxide in soil. Ratio of brown-colored leaf and plant height and leaf area were decreased by the increase of calcium hydroxide. Ratio of survived root and yield of root showed the peak at the application level of 100 kg per 10a, and both of them were gradually decreased by the increase of calcium hydroxide. The decrease of missing plant rate above the application level of 200 kg per 10a had a negative effect on the decrease of yield of root.

  • Photosynthesis and respiration of leaf and root of field grown Panax ginseng were investigated according to aerial part sensecence. No apparent photosynthesis activity was detected in senescenced leaf(less than 0.7mg total chlorophyll/g FW) and leaf dark respiration was consistent relation with senescence. Leaf respiratory Q$_{10}$ consistently increased with senscence. Root respiration and Q$_{10}$ tended to decrease with aerial part senescence only in the range of optimum temperature of leaf growth. Apparent photosynthesis or respiration of leaf was negatively or positively correlated, respectively with the increase of air temperature. Root respiration with temperature was well accordance with Arrhenius plot which was not consistent with aerial part senescence. Accelerated senescence may be recommendable for better root yield unless any reserve in stem or leaves contributes to root through translocation.

  • This study was invesigated to find out the optimum planting densities of Sculellaria baicalensis GEORGE about growth characters, yield components and yield at 6 planting densities by direct sowing culture. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; Studying the correlationship, the highly negative significances were found between planting densities and dry wights of root, leaves and stem ; on the other hand, the highly positive significances were found between planting densities and plant hight, stem diameter, respeitively. Plant height was long in dense planting, and short in spacious planting by direct sowing culture. Stem diameter was thick in spacious planting, and was thin in dense planting. Length and dry weight of root per plant were decreased in dense planting and were increased in spacious planting by direct sowing culture. Quality and yield of dry root weight were highest in optimum planting densities (30${\times}$10cm ; 33plants/m$^2$) by direct sowing culture.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of seedling age on quality and yield in bag culture of sweet pepper. Seedlings of 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 days old were compared. 60 days old seedlings grew faster than 30 or 40 days old seedlings. Mean days to bloom after sowing was fastest as 48 days in 30 days old seedling, followed by 20 days old seedlings. Rot activity was higher in 20 or 30 days old seedlings. Number and length of first lateral roots with thickness of 1.5mm or less, reached to 106.5 and 1.085 cm, respectively in 30 days old seedlings. Root weight, root length, and number of primary lateral roots were the greatest in 30 days old seedling. Greater early yield a obtained in 50 and 60 days old seedling, while late yield was grater in 30 or 40 days old seedlings.

  • This study was carried out to study the effect of emergence type of multiple stem and main bud on the quality of fresh and red ginseng in Korean ginseng. To achieve the aim of this study, characteristics of roots and quality factors were investigated. Single stem plants were 62.9% of the total samples, and the remainder(37.1%) were multiple stem plants. The number of stems affected considerably on root weight. Root weight of triple stem type with triple main bud was the largest among the types. As the number of stem per plant increased, the root quality became worse. In both single and multiple stem, the more the number of main buds was, the lower the quality grade was. Yield of the red ginseng was about 30%, showing little difference between single stem and multiple stem plant. As the number of stem increased, yield of Bonsam decreased. The quality grade of red ginseng of single stem was better than that of multiple stem. Multiple stem plant produced relatively more Yangsam and Japsam. As the number of main bud increased, the quality grade of ginseng decreased.
