  • This study was carried out to examine the influence of shading and root-cutting on the survival and growth of Pinus koraiensis seedlings. 1, The highest survival percentage of seedlings transplanted to transplanting bed appeared at the plot of 19% in shading. The 50% of the seedlings were survived if half of them were root-cutting. 2. Shoot elongation, root growth and diameter increment were the best at the plot of 100% in relative light intensity. However, those were the best at the plot with 1/4 root cutting. 3. The increase of needle fascicle number and the growth of needle surface area per seedling were the longest at the plot of 63% relative light intensity. Among root cutting treatments the 1/4 cutting plot showed the largest growth of needle areas.

  • This study was conducted to identify factors involved in rooting of Japanese larch cuttings. Cuttings were taken every week from June 24th to July 25th before and after the 10th of July which supposed to be best time for cutting. The content of IAA, carbohydrate, nitrogen and inorganic elements such as $Mg^{{+}{+}}$, $K^+$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ within cutting materials were analyzed. After the cuttings were planted, the root development was observed every week. Cuttings of easy-to-root clones were higher in IAA contents than the cuttings of hard-to-root clones at the time of cuttings were taken. There were significant differences in moisture content of cuttings taken on June 24th and July 25th between easy-to-root and hard-to-root clones, however no significant differences in moisture contents were observed between them taken on the 8th and 15th of July which supposed to be the best time for cutting. Inorganic matters and carbohydrate contents of cuttings taken from hedged trees were higher than those of non-hedged trees. The ratios K/C and C/N of cuttings taken from hedged trees were higher than those of non-hedged trees. Cuttings taken from easy-to-root clones showed higher content of carbohydrate and nitrogen than those of hard-to-root clones. The contents of inorganic elements, such as $Mg^{{+}{+}}$, $K^+$, and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ in cutting taken from hard-to-root clones were slightly higher than that of easy-to-root clones. The ratio C/N and K/C of cuttings which were taken from easy-to-root clones have shown a similar trend of carbohydrate and nitrogen. These data indicate that there was no one dominant factor that affect rooting of cutting, but many factors such as contents of IAA, carbohydrate, nitrogen, phosphate, and ratios of C/N and K/C appeared to affect on rooting of cuttings variously. Most of root initials were formed from phloem tissue within one week after cutting, and few were formed from callus tissue. Root primordia were developed from root initials within two weeks after cutting, and most of new roots were developed from root primordia within about five weeks after cutting.

  • It has been ascertained by a few researchers that soil salinities of the saline paddy fields have some effects upon the root development of the rice plants. But much is not known about the root formations of the rice plants in different varieties cultivated at the saline paddy field. Therefore this experiments were conducted to study the salinity tolerance of rice plants via variety test. Tested varieties were Akibare, Jinheung, Milyang #30, Josaeng Tongil, Suweon #264 and Suweon #287. And testing methods were cultivation experiment at the saline paddy field and leaf-cutting method at the laboratory. The results of cultivation experiment showed Milyang #30 and Josaeng Tongil were superior to others in root formation, and those of leaf-cutting method revealed that Josaeng Tongil and Mi1yang #30 were also superior to others in root formation and root length.

  • To obtain the basic information for late-cultivation of sweet potato [Ipomoea hatalas (L.) Lam. cv. 'Jinhongmi'], vine growth and storage root yield were investigated in variously cutting sizes (10, 20, and 30 cm) and planting depths (1~4 nodes in 30 cm vine) using black-film vinyl mulching cultivation ($75{\times}25\;cm$ planting density, June 20). At 30 days after planting, main vine length, number of node, and vine fresh weight were significantly affected by the cutting length, and these were significantly different 10 and 30 cm at 120 days. The vine elongation affected by planting depths showed the best growth in 2-nodes planting depth and the lowest growth in 4-nodes planting depth at 30 days, but the vine growth was not significantly different among planting depths at 120 days. Number of storage root per plant, weight of storage root per plant, mean weight of storage root and yield of storage root were increased in longer cutting length, and those in 10 cm cutting length were significantly reduced compared to the 20 and 30 cm cutting length. Number of storage root per plant in the deeper planting was much increased, but mean weight of storage root was much decreased. Yield of storage root per 10a was highest in 3-nodes planting depth. Therefore, planting methods by cutting length over 20 cm and planting depth of 2~3 nodes in late-cultivation of sweet potato will be more efficient to improve the vine growth and storage root yield.

  • With a purpose to manufacture an onion peeler, the root cutting equipment of the onion could be attached to a prototype onion peeler was developed. Before the experiment, the distribution of the dimensions of the Korean native onion were measured. And some types of the blades to cut and remove the root of the onion were designed and such characteristics as feasible revolution, conveying speed, and power requirement were investigated. From the result of the test, the selected one among the various cutters was the wing type blade with the round blade to cut out the root and with the vertical blade to cut a circular line. The optimum operating conditions of the wing type blade were revealed the revolution with no load was at 630 rpm, and the conveying speed was 0.08 m/s. Under these conditions, the maximum torque was 5.25 kg·m and the power requirement was 33 W, respectively.

  • The effect of nutrient concentration and plant growth regulators on rooting of Coleus stem cuttings were investigated. In contrast to sand cutting, the nutrient solution or plant growth regulator treatment increased the root numbers and root length. The concentration of nutrient solution were 1, l/2 and 1/4 strength of the balanced nutrient solution developed by Japanese Horticultural Experimental Station and the highest root growth was obtained from 1/4 strength nutrient concentration. NAA or IBA treatment in culture solution stimulated the rooting and 0.01mg/l of NAA or IBA was effective in root development. Furthermore, days for rooting were shortened and root growth were promoted by mixing nutrient solutions with plant growth regulators and by using cutting with leaves. The rooting of Coleus was observed under microscope and the adventitious root formation initiated at 3 days after cutting with nutrient and auxin mixture.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of cutting frequency and nitrogen fertilization in the mixed pasture on root production and its depth distribution. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Root distribution studied on botanical composition was not significantly different by the upper 20cm level in all treatments. 2. Root yields were all high irrespectively of dominant species. However, Arrhenatherum elatius dominant pasture showed the lowest. Alopecurus pratensis dominant pasture showed the highest in root yield. 3. With the root yield, there was no significant difference in cutting frequency, but the moderate nitrogen level(N-2) showed the highest root yield among three N levels. 4. The depth distribution of root was 1m depth in all treatments.

  • The quality of periodontal instrument cutting edge is a basic element of effective root planing procedure. Using instruments, the sharp edge is changed into blunt or beveled edge. With the blunt instrument, the periodontal treatment can't be carried into accuracy and effective. The study on the wear of periodontal curet is insufficient, there are few publications about the change of sharpness of cutting egde after using instrument and a certen reports were published on the study of scanning electron microscope(SEM) examination. In this study, to declare the number of strokes for sharpening of instruments, the changes of cutting edge is measured by the clinical methods, tactile sensitivity examination and refraction light-white line test after scaling strokes and root planing strokes. SEM test was added for defined the changes of cutting edges. The 7/8 Gracey curets that have been never used was tested. Maxillary molars which were extracted from the School of Dental Medicine, Dankook University was used. Subjected teeth had attachment loss more than 6 mm in bucca-lingual surface and sufficient calculus of a band type in cervical area. The strokes of curet were executed 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 times on scaling stroke and 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 times on root planing stroke. A resident has periodontal experience over 3 years carried out the clinical examinations those tactile sensitivity examination and refraction light-white line test 5 times. The case there being tactile sensitivity certenly is 2, the case being felt tactile sensitivity is 1, and the case there not being tactile sensitivity is 0. The visual examination was recorded as following. The case that refracted white line is not recognised is 2, the case that uncerten is 1, and the case that acknowledged is 0. The results were obtained as follows. 1. After scaling strokes, the tactile sensitivity was reduced after 11 strokes and disappeared in 13 strokes. 2. In tactile sensitivity after root planing procedures, sensitivity was reduced after 25 strokes and disappeared in 35 strokes. 3. In case of visual examination, the detection of refracted white line was increased after 9 strokes of scaling procedures and the accuracy of wear wasn't showed after root planing procedures. 4. In SEM, metal projection was observed on new periodontal curet cutting edge and it was disappeared after scaling procedures. 5. In SEM, the cutting edge was showed changing linear into an aspect of the surface after 5 strokes of scaling procedures and 10 strokes of root planing procedures and showed beveled edge in 11 strokes of scaling procedures, 25 strokes of root planing procedures. The results of 3-type examination indicated that the sharpening of curet should be performed after 11 strokes of scaling procedures and 25 strokes of root planing procedures.

  • This study reviewed the theory of acoustic emission applying generation of acoustic emission in metal cutting and proposed a relationship between fundamental cutting parameters and the root mean square (RMS) voltage of the acoustic emission on the basis of the mechanics of the orthogonal cutting operation. Experimental results are presented for 6063-T5 Auminum and the validity of this relationship is evaluated by a series of tests varying cutting speed, feed rate and rake angle in orthogonal cutting. The original formula derived theoretically has been modified in order to utilize independent of fundamental cutting parameters. RMS voltage of acoustic emission depends on cutting speed and strain rate, but it is not much affected by feed rate. Applying lubricant, the drop of RMS level has been observed.

  • This experiment was carried out to know the effects of aerial part cutting on the growth and root yield of Achyranthes japonica. The various cutting treatments were tested. Cutting treaments were 20cm and 30cm cutting from the apical part of plant, when plant height was 30cm and 50cm, respectively. The seed amount was the largest at non-cutting, indication that cutting treatment inhibits fruiting. The most effective treatment for the root growth was 30cm cutting just before flowering time. Cutting just before flowering time increased root diameter, length and root weight comparing with non-cutting.
