  • Nanocrystalline (NC) Ni electrodeposits (EDs) with a mean grain size of $34{\pm}12nm$ has been investigated, from room temperature to $800^{\circ}C$ under a purge gas of argon, by both non-isothermal and isothermal differential scanning calorimetry measurements, in combination with characterization of temperature-dependent microstructural evolution. A significant exothermic peak resulting from superimposition of recrystallization and surface oxidation occurs between 340 and $745^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the NC Ni EDs. The temperatures for recrystallization and oxidation increase with increasing the heating rate. In addition, recrystallization leads to a profound brittle-ductile transition of the Ni EDs in a narrow range around the peak temperature for the recrystallization.

  • In this study, the high-temperature dielectric constant of Si3N4 ceramics, a representative non-oxide-based radome material, was evaluated and the cause of the dielectric constant change was analyzed in relation to the oxidation behavior. The dielectric constant of Si3N4 ceramics was 7.79 at room temperature, and it linearly increased as the temperature increased, showing 8.42 at 1,000 ℃. As results of analyzing the microstructure and phase for the Si3N4 ceramics before and after heat-treatment, it was confirmed that oxidation did not occur at all or occurred only on the surface at a very insignificant level below 1,000 ℃. Based on this, it is concluded that the increase in the dielectric constant according to the temperature increase of Si3N4 ceramics is irrelevant to the oxidation behavior and is only due to the activation of charge polarization.

  • Titanomagnetites, the primary magnetic mineral in submarine basalts, generally has undergone some degree of low temperature oxidation to cation-deficient titanomaghemites. Synthetic analogues of natural titanomaghemite have been prepared by the removal of iron mechanism employing a low-temperature aqueous oxidation method. Along with the low-temperature oxidation of titanomagnetite, magnetic properties of titanomagnetite change sensitively. The results show that as the degree of oxidation increases, the Curie temperature (Tc) increases from $166^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, saturation magnetization (Ms) at room temperature decreases from 126.30 kAlm (25.26 emu/g) to 16.55 kAlrn (3.31 emu/g) monotonously, and coercive force (Hc) and coercivity of remanence (Hcr) increase from 6.13 kAlm (77 Oe) and 23.24 kAlm (292 Oe) to 38.83 kNm (488 Oe) and 47.03 kAlm (591 Oe), respectively. Low field susceptibility (X) decreases from $2023{\times}10^{-6}SI$ to $84{\times}10^{-6}S1$. Based on the results of this study, it is interpreted that the NRM intensity variations of the oceanic crust of presetnt day to 30 Ma is due to the formation of titanomahemites of various degree of oxidation by the low-temperature aqueous oxidation of titanomagnetite, while the magnetic intensity changes of the oceanic crust older than 30 Ma is presumably caused by the combined effect of the formation of titanomaghemites and subsequent inversion of titanomagnemites. DetaileJ causes of the variations of NRM intensity of the oceanic crust may be revealed by systematic studies of the oceanic-floor basalts in the future.

  • In this study, the effects of carbon black (CB) content and anodic oxidation treatment with $AgNO_3$ on positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior of CB/HDPE nanocomposites were investigated. Also, the addition of elastomer as a toughing agent was studied. The 20~50 wt% of CB, 0~5 wtt% of elastomer, and 1 wt% of $AgNO_3$-filled HDPE nanocomposites were prepared using the internal mixer in 60 rpm at $160{\circ}C$ and the compression-molded at $180{\circ}C$ for 10 min. As a result, the room temperature resistivity and PTC intensity of the composites were dependent, to a large extent, on the content of CB, addition of elastomer, and surface chemical properties that were controlled in the relative arrangements of the carbon black aggregates in a polymeric matrix. Moreover, the composites with relatively low room temperature resistivity and suitable PTC intensity could be achieved by treatment of $AgNO_3$. Consequently, it was noted that PTC effect was due to the deagglomeration or the breakage of the conductive networks caused by thermal expansion or crystalline melting of the polymeric matrix.

  • The Ni-Al intermetallic compound that has the greatest potential to be commercialized shows the high ductility at room temperature with the addition of boron, but has extremely low ductility at high temperature and oxidation environment. On this research work, the changes of microstructure and compressive fracture properties were studied in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. The precipitation behavior of $Ni_3Al$ after solution treatment at $1300^\circC$ for 14hrs and aging treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 14hrs was varied with Al content in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. These microstructure could be modified dramatically by suitable heat treatments. Martensite or martensite plus $Ni_3Al$ microstructure was obtained upon oil quenching from $1300^\circC$. Aging of Martensite at $800^\circC$ resulted in the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase. The compressive fracture strength and compressive fracture strain were improved by the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase mixtures at room temperature and $1100^\circC$. Microcracks are observed mostly in the region of NiAl and the interface of $NiAl-Ni_3Al$ phase after compressive test at room temperature. In the case of high temperature compressive test, microcracks are formed in the region of $Ni_3Al$ phase.

  • Benzene is a hazardous air pollutant, classified as carcinogenic to humans, that requires special management. Benzene exists both indoors and outdoors and the control measure of indoor benzene is different from that of outdoor benzene. The removal of indoor benzene needs to be accomplished at low temperatures (normally below $100^{\circ}C$), while outdoor benzene is usually removed at much higher temperature ($300-400^{\circ}C$) by using catalytic oxidation. This review paper summarizes the recent trend in catalytic treatment of airborne benzene, focusing on catalytic oxidation and catalytic ozone oxidation. Particular attention is paid to Mn-based catalysts for low-temperature oxidation of benzene, which are more economical than the other noble-metal catalysts. Various methods are used to generate more efficient Mn-based catalysts for benzene removal. Ozone oxidation is attracting particularly significant attention because it can remove benzene effectively below $100^{\circ}C$, even at room temperature.

  • Management of gas safety is becoming important with increasing use of gas facilities. U-safety system is being promoted as part of national management of gas, and thus real-time and in-situ gas sensor should be developed. Detection method for When the gas sensor is installed in gas conduit, explosion may be likely, because hydrocarbon gases is usually used the difference of thermal resistance between reference and working electrode. Therefore, it is required to detect the hydrocarbons, such as $CH_4$ and CO, at room temperature via electrochemically catalytic reaction. In this study, Pt nanoparticle was doped on the porous gold powder by electrolytic plating method, and then it was used as catalytic electrode for CO oxidation. For Pt/PAu electrode, approximately 21% of CO conversion was obtained. It is noted that Pt/PAu electrode could be used to react the oxidation of hydrocarbon gases at room temperature via applying of external voltage.
