Targeting a rooftop biotope created in urban area, this study aims at verifying a creation technique reflecting an urban biosphere reserve concept as well as its function as the habitats of various wild animals. To this end, a set of processes of a biosphere reserve-based basic conception and master plan, sectoral plans, construction and monitoring were applied to the rooftop of 12-story UNESCO Building in Seoul. In particular, the rooftop habitats were divided into core area, buffer zone and transition area, and habitats and facilities suitable to the characteristics of each space were planned. By aligning a plantation planning map with environmental conditions such as topography and water, creation of diverse habitats was enabled. As a result, a set of various habitats including wetlands, wild grassland, shrubs, forest trees and vegetable fields was created at the site. Species living in these habitats included 148 plant species, 62 insect species, 2 amphibian species, 3 fishery species and 3 bird species. The rooftop eco-park of UNESCO Building, which was created one year ago, is assessed as an important space for conservation of biodiversity as well as a place where a biosphere reserve concept was well applied. Meanwhile, for this rooftop biotope to be a pioneer of urban biosphere reserve-based types, a number of principles & methodologies suggested in this study need to be applied, In a perspective of landscape ecology, maintenance efforts should be linked with green areas in neighboring areas, which are the sources of species, In addition, considering that the rooftop biotope is a restored ecosystem, theories and approaches from restoration ecology should be applied. On-going monitoring on environmental changes is also required as the site is located in the urban center, Ultimately, rooftop biotopes including the case study area should contribute in promoting the socio-economic, cultural, and spiritual sustainability as well as environmental sustainability of a city.

This study was to investigate and identify the trends and the direction of the researches related to the rooftop greening by analyzing the content of the studies published in Korea during the past two decades. Internet search was to collect data for this study, and the articles reviewed are limited to research journals, theses, and doctoral dissertations. The collected articles were then examined for content analysis and classified into several categories according to year, topic, and types of journals. The results showed that the total number of articles published in Korea for the period 1984-2004 was 97. While there was only one article in 1984, the number of articles has increased to 16 in 2000, 20 in 2003, and 16 in 2004 now. According to the analysis of the 97 data, there were 25 master's theses and 3 doctoral dissertations and 69 articles published in journals. Articles about rooftop greening were published most frequently in the Korea Institute of Landscape Architecture(11 articles), followed by Journal of Architectural Institute of Korea(8 articles) and Journal of Korea Society for Environment Restoration(7 articles). The studies regarding the rooftop greening has increased in number since the Ministry of Construction and Transportation made it possible to 10-15 cm shallow depth of soil in rooftop greening in 2000, which was above 100 cm before 2000. The articles examined are classified into four areas of research according to topic. The number of articles in each area is as follows : 57 articles in the field of the technology, 17 in the study of the plan and system, 10 in the case study, and 12 in the plant study, Particularly, the studies concerning technology are subdivided into the five areas and the number of each area is as follows : 25 studies for the plant base, 15 for design plan, 13 for the efficacy of the rooftop greening, 3 for the managing program, and 1 for the relation with buildings. Over the years, the studies for the rooftop greening have increased in number since these studies have made a positive effect on the improvement of the urban ecosystem and on the environment of the city lacking greens. However, the majority of research are for plant and planting base and those researches are not enough to make some effects on the improvement of the environment, it seems necessary to provide some system applicable to the field or to design practical study in order to contribute to the urban environment in Korea.

This study was aimed to establish different drainage types of soil media on the plant growing in rooftop. For this study, experiment plots were installed on the roof of Social Science building, Chongju University, from April, 1998 to September, 1999. (1) Sand and sandy loam as base and check soils, (2) vermiculite as a inorganic soil media (3) "humus sawdust" and "burned rice hull" as organic soil media were used by various mixing ratio Zoysia japonica, was selected for the experiment. The results of this study are as follows : L5B3S2 and L5H3S2 of bad drainage character with a plastic drainage plate combination caused good growth effect on Zoysia japonica examined in 3 types of drainage layer with 5 types of soil media. From this result, it could be suggested that combined design of plastic drainage plate with 2 soil types - L5B3S2 and L5H3S2 - be desirable composition for regarding weight load and plant growth.
The purpose of this study is to select the appropriate wild herbaceous plants on the rooftop. For the purpose of the experiments, 14 wild herbaceous plants were chosen. As the results of the experiments, the wild herbaceous plants growing on the culture soil(perlite) Among the 14 kinds of wild herbaceous plants, such as Chrysanthemum boreale, Taraxacum mongolicum, Aster Koraiensis, Aster yomena, Oenothera odorata, Oenothera lamarckiana, Patrinia scabiosaefolia showed good effects on growth of above ground parts. Therefore, these plants will effective for the rooftop revegetation. Callistephus chinensis and Lotus corniculatus var. Japonicus showed good height growth, wherase covering rate was worst. Chrysanthemum boreale, Platycodon grandiflorum, Patrinia scabiosaefolia were plant height, wherase covering rate was not good . For the expected number of seedings more than 3,000 per square meter, many seedings got withered to death while the survivors were suppressed to grow slow in the early stage due to the densityproblem.

This study investigated the effects of various planting models on the joint cultivation of eggplant (Solanum melongena) and marigold (Tagetes erecta)to enhance sustainable rooftop urban farming. Rooftop agriculture is increasingly valued to boost the food supply and benefit the environment. Integrating such practices into urban planning is viewed as a way to sustainably manage resources and improve the food-energy-water cycle in cities. The experiment was conducted on a rooftop in Chungju, South Korea from May to August. Four different planting setups were used: central eggplant with peripheral marigold (SET), eggplant with a protective net (SIC), central marigold with peripheral eggplant (TES), and control with only eggplant (CON S). These models tested the effects of companion planting versus monoculture using a lightweight soil mix ideal for rooftops made from cocopeat and perlite and enriched with organic fertilizer. Measurements focused on soil conditions and plant health and assessed soil temperature, moisture, conductivity, plant height, width, and leaf size. The results indicated that the SET modelyielded the best growth. This setup benefited from marigold pest control properties and its ability to improve soil conditions by enhancing moisture and nutrient levels and aiding eggplant growth. These findings underscore the potential of mixed planting on rooftops and suggest that such approaches can be effectively incorporated into urban agriculture to boost yield and environmental sustainability. This study supports the idea that diverse planting methods can significantly affect plant growth and promote urban greening and food security.

The purpose of this study is to select suitable planting base for the mat-type rooftop greening in order to popularize rooftop greening system easily. The experiment was conducted from 2004 June to 2005 May under several conditions; 4 soil depths under mats(2cm, 5cm, 10cm, 15cm), two soil mixtures(natural soil 80%+leaf mold 20%, artificial soil) and two light conditions(full sun place, 20% shaded place). In this experiment, 3 types of mats were used ; the herbaceous plants mat(11 plants inclusive of Lotus corniculatus L., Silene armeria L.), the lawn mat with Festica arundinacea and Sedum mat with Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum sarmentosum, Sedum oryzifolium, Sedum middendorffianum. The result is as follows; in the mat-type rooftop greening, the herbaceous plants mat, lawn mat and sedum mat are the similar number of plant and effect of greening on soil depth 2cm, 5cm and 10cm, 15cm. So suitable soil depth of rooftop greening is 10cm for the load and economical factor. Thus the mat-type rooftop greening possible planting base depth of all 13cm as soil depth 10cm and mat depth 3cm. As soil mixtures, the number and growth of plants were better mat and 'natural soil 80% +leaf mold 20%' than mat and artificial soil. In herbaceous plants mat, Silene armeria L., Dianthus chinensis, Centaurea cyanus L., Lotus corniculatus L. are survival in full sun place and Silene armeria L., Dianthus chinensis, Centaurea cyanus L. are survival in 20% shaded place. In conclusion, selection of suitable soil mixtures and plants is possible extensive management rooftop greening with effect of continuous greening. The mat-type rooftop greening are lightweight and simple preparation without management and can popularize readily.

This study focused on the regulations and support system of green rooftop landscaping between Korea and China. Our research found out regulations and support system to review the supplement point to understand the present state of green rooftop landscaping in the two countries. We aimed to provide basic legal information for the development of green rooftop landscaping regulations. Also, a management plan guide and after-evaluation guide were suggested. First, roof load safety is the foremost factor for the structure of green rooftop landscaping. It includes not only considering the weight of construction materials, but also accurately calculating weight of rain, snow and the rooftop's capacity for people when the rooftop is designed. Second, the appropriate waterproof and root material should be selected basing on climatic conditions. Third, a maintenance and management plan needs to be established to regularly check the plant, facilities, soil and to maintain them. Fourth, the criteria of quality inspection are waterproof and root resistant material, and the growth and development of plants. Waterproof and root resistant materials are a very important part of rooftop greening, so they must be strictly inspected after construction. Fifth, the support system of rooftop greening should be continuously improved. The choice of the object and the amount of support should be strictly stipulated so that the construction of rooftop is promoted when volunteers do rooftop greening.

The purpose of this study is to provide the fundamental material and information for the plant maintenance after rooftop planting through physiochemical characteristics. The characteristics of artificial soils after rooftop planting from 1993 to 1999 was investigated. Fourteen investigation areas were selected from 4 cities(2 areas selected by each year). The analysis of the circumstances of the areas, the physical characteristics, and the chemical characteristics of the soil were conducted. The artificial soil pH ranged 5.26∼7.40 showing that after construction the soil pH tended to decrease. The soil bulk density of the site was lowest in 1999, 0.15g/㎤, and used to increase toward 1993. We found the fact that the soil bulk density increased gradually after rooftop application . The coefficients of permeability of the soils range from 0.016 to 0.052 cm/sec, which seemed to be in good permeability level. The artificial soils had relatively high water moisture capacity of 62.69∼71.36%. The soil organic matter content of the artificial soils ranged from 0.43 to 1.34%. The exchangeable caution concentration in the artificial soil ranged, Na, 2.36∼4.71mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}, Mg 0.88∼2.84mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX},K 2.97∼9.61 mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}, and Ca 9.39∼28.23 mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}. The amount of total N ranged from 0.003 to 0.286% in study sites. Soil chemical properties varied year to year and showed little tend. The research results showed that some characteristics of the artificial soil were changed after rooftop planting, i.e., soil pH and soil bulk density. Soil bulk density had a negative relationship with the coefficient of permeability, showing that the drainage condition might be limited after some period. This study suggests that a diversity of the research in the changes of the plant growth basis on the areas after construction.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of soil depth and planting density on the growth of lettuce, crown daisy, and strawberry on a rooftop condition using artificial soil as a growth media. The vegetable crops showed better growth for plant height (cm), plant width (cm), plant fresh weight (g), and Fo, Fm and Fv/m on 20cm depth soil than 10cm depth soil except strawberry. Planting density of $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$ did not show significant differences on the growth of the crops. Soil moisture content and EC were low for 10cm depth soil in lettuce plots, whereas there was no significant differences on soil moisture and EC between two soil depth in strawberry plots. Hunter's L, a, and b values showed the leaf color of lettuce dark green on 20cm depth soil and reddish on 10cm depth soil. Results showed that soil depth suitable for crop growth on rooftop conditions was 20cm rather than 10cm. Growth response of the crops showed no significant difference between $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$, indicating that planting density of 64 $plants/m^2$ could be practiced on rooftop conditions. Lettuce growth rapidly changed in control treatment in which leaves were not pinched out, while slowly changed in plants which leaves were periodically pinched out. In the case of control plot, it was impossible to harvest because withering of lower leaves after blossom on June 22. The plant of crown daisy in which pinching was not conducted, blossomed on June 7, and the plants were removed since its aesthetical value was lost. Strawberry seemed to be a suitable vegetable crop for rooftop conditions based on its high covering rate and extended growth period until late October. The soil depth 20cm and planting density 64 $plants/m^2$ were suitable for vegetable crops on green roof system using artificial soil.

The objective of this study is to analyze the thermal properties of various green roof type. The experimental districts, have different soil thickness, soil type, the existence of module and the different kinds of vegetation, had installed. A measurement was conducted in Seoul University to investigate the thermal impacts of rooftop greening. The measurement point of temperature were 30, located in soil surface, middle of the soil layer, under the module, hard surface and soffit surface of each experimental district. The experimental investigation lasted from 6th August to 29th August, a total of 24 days. The results showed that green roof can contribute thermal benefits by soil and vegetation and reduce building energy consumption by a role of insulation. It's also better to make soil thickness over 20cm and various vegetation that should be more effective. The district installed only soil also could be effective for reducing the temperature of roof surface. Therefore, the increase of soil thickness and various vegetation could reduce more temperature of roof surface and building energy consumption. Also, it's helpful to reduce temperature that plant coverage rate be raised.
