  • Effect of roof slope on the transmissivities of direct and diffuse solar radiation using a computer simulation model developed by Kim and Lee(1997) was analyzed for 10-span glasshouse located in Seoul(37$^{\circ}$34' N), Chonju(35$^{\circ}$49' N) and Cheju(33$^{\circ}$31' N). Transmissivities of diffuse solar radiation in glasshouse with roof slopes of 15, 20, 24.6, 30 and 35 degree were calculated as 61.3, 61.6, 61.7, 56.8 and 58.6%, respectively. Transmissivities of direct solar radiation(TDSR) during the period except summer season were highly affected by the roof slope. During the winter season, TDSR in glasshouse with roof slopes of 30 and 35 degree were higher than those with other roof slopes. Also, during the period except winter season, TDSR in glasshouse with roof slope of 20 degree were higher than those with other roof slopes. Difference in TDSR with latitude was significant during the period from October to February. At this period TDSR were highly appeared at lower latitude. Effect of roof slope on TDSR in S-N greenhouse was smaller than those in E-W greenhouse. It is considered that direct solar radiation highly transmitted in the glasshouse with roof slope of 20 degree.

  • The wind pressure distributions were analyzed through the wind tunnel experiment to provide fundamental criteria for the structural design on the three-span arched house according to the wind directions. In order to investigate the wind force distribution, the variation of the wind force coefficients, the mean wind force coefficients, the drag force coefficients and the lift force coefficients were estimated from the experimental data. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The variation of the wind force with the wind directions on the side walls was the greatest at the upwind edge of the walls. The change of pressure from the positive to the negative on the side walls occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$ in the first house and 60$^{\circ}$ in the third house. 2. The maximum negative wind force along the length of the roof appeared at the length ratio of 0-0.2, when the wind directions were 90$^{\circ}$ in the first house, 60$^{\circ}$ in the second house and 30$^{\circ}$ in the third house. 3. The maximum negative wind force along the width of the roof appeared at the width ratio and the wind direction of 0.4 and 0$^{\circ}$ in the first house, 0.4-0.6 and 30$^{\circ}$ in the second house and 0.6 and 30$^{\circ}$ in the third house, respectively. 4. The maximum mean positive and negative wind forces occurred at the wind direction of 60$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$, respectively, on the side walls of the first house, and the maximum mean negative wind force on the roof occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$ in third house. 5. The maximum drag and lift forces occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$, and the maximum lift force appeared in the third house. 6. The parts to be considered for the local wind forces were the edges of the walls, the edges of the x-direction of the roofs, and the locations of the width ratio of 0.4 of the first and third house and the center of the width of the second house for the y-direction of the roofs.

  • The seismic overstrength factor $\Omega$ is evaluated for 4-story reinforced concrete buildings in Korea(of which seismic intensity is low). The study model is designed according to aseismic guideline research - phase II in Korea. The effect of variation of span length and bay number, dead load is considered, especially including the variation of hardening ration after yielding. And push-over analysis is performed, in which the external and internal frame is connected by rigid-link and the $\Omega$ is calculated using the roof drift ratio at 2%. For Zone I, the mean value of $\Omega$ is ranged form 2.3 to 2.5, For Zone II, from 3.1 to 3.4. For low hardening ratio(3%) after yielding, $\Omega$ has little relations with the number of bay, like as the results of other research. But for 5% hardening ratio, $\Omega$ is increased as the number of bay is increased. Within general gravity-load bound, the variation of D.L. has variation of D. L. has no effect on $\Omega$. And, $\Omega$ is increased as the span length is increased.

  • Wind effects on roofs are usually considered by equivalent static wind loads based on the equivalence of displacement or internal force for structural design. However, for large-span spatial structures that are prone to dynamic instability under strong winds, such equivalent static wind loads may be inapplicable. The dynamic stability of spatial structures under unsteady wind forces is therefore studied in this paper. A new concept and its corresponding method for dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads are proposed for structural engineers. The method is applied in the dynamic stability design of an actual double-layer cylindrical reticulated shell under wind actions. An experimental-numerical method is adopted to study the dynamic stability of the shell and the dynamic instability originating from critical wind velocity. The dynamic instability-aimed equivalent static wind loads of the shell are obtained.

  • The quality of oak mushoom(Lentinus edodes(Berk) Sing) is sensitively affected by environmental factors, especially moisture by the rain during the growing period. To protect mushrooms from being wet, plastic-covered facilities with side openings are mostly being used. However, the indoor temperature and humidity f the facility without roof opening become higher due to its poor ventilation, and consequently reduce the productivity and quality as well. In this study, we analyzed the ventilation rates and indoor temperatures of improved facilities as affected by the area of roof opening and shading rate by the model. The indoor temperature decreased by more than 2.5$^{\circ}C$ as the shading rate increased from 50% to 90%, and especially the effect of wind speed on indoor temperature was significantly great under as low as 50% of shading rate. The ventilation rate became higher under wind speed of 1~2m.s-1 regardless of the shading rate. As the wind speed increased from 0m.s-1 to 2m.s-1, the indoor temperature decreased by more than 2.$0^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the indoor temperature became lower with increasing roof opening ratio, but showed no significant differences at more than 50% of roof opening ratio. At lower shading rate, the indoor temperature sensitively decreased with increasing area of roof opening. Additionally, we obtained the higher ventilation performance with the area of roof opening more or less equal to side opening, regardless of the wind speed and shading rate.

  • The wind-induced dynamic response of large-span flexible structures includes two important components-background response and resonant response. However, it is difficult to separate the two components in time-domain. To solve the problem, a relational expression of wavelet packet coefficients and power spectrum is derived based on the principles of digital signal processing and the theories of wavelet packet analysis. Further, a new approach is proposed for separation of the background response from the resonant response. Then a numerical example of frequency detection is provided to test the accuracy and the spectral resolution of the proposed approach. In the engineering example, the approach is applied to compute the power spectra of the wind-induced response of a large-span roof structure, and the accuracy of spectral estimation for stochastic signals is verified. The numerical results indicate that the proposed approach is efficient and accurate with high spectral resolution, so it is applicable for power spectral computation of various response signals of structures induced by the wind. Moreover, the background and the resonant response time histories are separated successfully using the proposed approach, which is sufficiently proved by detailed verifications. Therefore, the proposed approach is a powerful tool for the verification of the existing frequency-domain formulations.

  • Aerodynamics in a naturally ventilated multi-span greenhouse with plants was analyzed numerically by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. To investigate the potential application of CFD techniques to greenhouse design and analysis, the numerical results of the CFD model were compared with the results of a steady-state mass and energy balance numerical model. Assuming the results of the mass and energy balance model as the standard, reasonably good agreement was obtained between the natural ventilation rates computed by the CFD numerical model and the mass and energy balance model. The steady-state CFD model during a sunny day showed negative errors as high as 15% in the morning and comparable positive errors in the afternoon. Such errors assumed to be due to heat storage in the floor, benches, and greenhouse structure. For a west wind of 2.5 m s$^{-1}$ , the internal nonporous shading screens that opened to the east were predicted to have a 15.6% better air exchange rate than opened to the west. It was generally predicted that the presence of nonporous internal shading screens significantly reduced natural ventilation if the horizontal opening of the screen for each span was smaller that the effective roof vent opening.

  • This paper presents overall procedure by experimental study in order to deriving design factors of snow removal machine on roof of multi-span greenhouse. For the purpose of the testing, the scale model of the machine was made in the form to drive above the monorail. The test was performed in order to calculating friction coefficient of the machine and shear coefficient between sliced horizontal section of snow at constant temperature and humidity room in National Academic of Agricultural Science. As a result of the laboratory test, shear coefficient between sliced horizontal section of snow were calculated 1.60~2.37. Further investigation, we will study to derive the relationship between the real and scaled model through the field test.
