  • The optimum blasting pattern to excavate a quarry efficiently and economically can be determined based on the minimum production cost which is generally estimated according to rock fragmentation. Therefore it is a critical problem to predict fragment size distribution of blasted rocks over an entire quarry. By comparing various prediction models, it can be ascertained that the result obtained from Kuz-Ram model relatively coincides with that of field measurements. Kuz-Ram model uses the concept of rock factor to signify conditions of rock mass such as block size, rock jointing, strength and others. For the evaluation of total production cost, it is imperative to estimate 3-D spatial distribution of rock factor for the entire quarry. In this study, a sequential indicator simulation technique is adopted for estimation of spatial distribution of rock factor due to its higher reproducibility of spatial variability and distribution models than Kriging methods. Further, this can reduce the uncertainty of predictor using distribution information of sample data The entire quarry is classified into three types of rock mass and optimum blasting pattern is proposed for each type based on 3-D spatial distribution of rock factor. In addition, plane maps of rock factor distribution for each ground levels is provided to estimate production costs for each process and to make a plan for an optimum blasting pattern.

  • Rock fragmentation with plasma blasting technique has advantageous properties in contrast to the conventional blasting method controlling of flying rocks and ground vibrations, when residents are complaining or surrounding structures stay in protection from blasting operations. The experiences show in urban construction works that the plasma blasting is the most possible method to prevent damages and minimize adverse environmental impacts. The fragmentation energy level is evaluated by numerical simulation using PFC for various drill hole patterns and tested accordingly to get the feasibility. The energy output of plasma blasting system has been improved to a level of 1 MJ, which can break a 2-3 ㎥ granite boulder or 1.5m height bench face. Measurements are carried out to get the ground vibration level and propagation equation, so that control of the blasting operations can be performed more precisely and safely.

  • Considering the applicability of Kuz-Ram model, which has been used extensively for predicting rock fragmentation size distribution by blasting, to domestic open-pit limestone mine, a total of 21 blasting tests have been executed at an open-pit limestone mine in eastern Gangwon of South Korea. A comparative analysis of field measured value and Kuz-Ram predicted value showed that there are a considerable amount of error in the predicted values regardless of application of various correction parameters for rock factor and uniformity factor; up to 56.45% in mean fragmentation size and 37.52% in uniformity index. Also the problem of applying different correction parameters has been derived even though a similar blasting pattern has been adopted for a same blasting bench. The authors therefore suggest that Kuz-Ram model needs to be modified for a proper application to domestic open-pit limestone mine.

  • To obtain the dynamic mechanical properties, fracture modes, energy and brittleness characteristics of Furong Baijiao coal rock, the dynamic impact compression tests under 0, 4, 8 and 12 MPa confining pressure were carried out using the split Hopkinson pressure bar. The results show that failure mode of coal rock in uniaxial state is axial splitting failure, while it is mainly compression-shear failure with tensile failure in triaxial state. With strain rate and confining pressure increasing, compressive strength and peak strain increase, average fragmentation increases and fractal dimension decreases. Based on energy dissipation theory, the dissipated energy density of coal rock increases gradually with growing confining pressure, but it has little correlation with strain rate. Considering progressive destruction process of coal rock, damage variable was defined as the ratio of dissipated energy density to total absorbed energy density. The maximum damage rate was obtained by deriving damage variable to reflect its maximum failure severity, then a brittleness index BD was established based on the maximum damage rate. BD value declined gradually as confining pressure and strain rate increase, indicating the decrease of brittleness and destruction degree. When confining pressure rises to 12 MPa, brittleness index and average fragmentation gradually stabilize, which shows confining pressure growing cannot cause continuous damage. Finally, integrating dynamic deformation and destruction process of coal rock and according to its final failure characteristics under different confining pressures, BD value is used to classify the brittleness into four grades.

  • In this study, the standard particle velocity equations and the equation for calculating specific charge weight with application of rock fracture method using the finecker plus are suggested and the existing equation of fragmentation was transformed into one applicable to finecker plus. Standard rock fracture pattern was designed. Square root scaled equation is $V=345.39(D/\sqrt{W})^{-1.4484$. computable equation to specific charge wei인t is $W_f=(2.3\~2.5)\;f_agdV$, charge weight per hole is 0.54kg, and proportion of diameter 30cm fragmentation is about $48.7\%$. This rock fracture method nay him out to be more excellent than the other methods.

  • The present paper highlights some important fragmentation issues experienced in the limestone quarry blast rounds. In light of these major issues, the paper outlines influence of a few important design parameters, which bear merit to alter the blast performance in order to duly resolve the issues in field scale blast rounds. A comprehensive field based program for evaluation of such blast rounds has also been suggested. The knowledge disseminated in the paper, backed up by sufficient images, is largely based on the experience of the authors, while designing, implementing and evaluating numerous field scale blast rounds in cement grade limestone quarries.

  • In the present research paper large scale blasting was conducted on two different firing patterns, namely, straight V type and skewed V type pattern on the same sandstone overburden bench with similar explosives. The post-blast fragmentation assessments were made by use of digital imaging technique. The total cycle time of 10 $m^3$ rope shovels was also recorded in the field. The results reveal improvements in the fragmentation and excavator performance results for the blasts fired on skewed V type pattern. The paper discusses the skewed V firing pattern and the reasons for its superior performance vis-$\grave{a}$-vis the straight V type pattern.

  • A new fragmentation model, called the GRS (the generation model of weathered residual soils) model, was proposed in this study, This model could identify the formation of a residual soil. This model is based on the phenomena that as the soil was weathered more highly, soil particles were smaller and pores were more expanded simultaneously. The possibility of fragmentation, $P_F,$ which was based on the fractal theory, was introduced in this model. There were some fundamental notions in the GRS model that soil particles were generated as the rock is fragmented, and the fragmentation of the rock was performed step by step. The $P_F,$ of the rock was not constant at each fragmentation steps. As a result of application on the GRS model, there were more residue where $P_{Fi}s$ were small at any particle size. There was a S-shape of PSD curve at the concave shape of $P_{Fi},$ and the PSD curve goes to a gaped graded curve at the convex shape of $P_{Fi}.$ The shape of PSD curve was concave in the case of small $P_{Fi}s.$ The value of $P_{Fi}$ increased with the coefficient of uniformity $(C_u)$ and the fragmentation fractal dimension $(D_r),$ but had no relation with the coefficient of gradation $(C_C)$.
