  • This study is aimed to analyze the accuracy of depth information of reservoir using the robot-ship equipped with GPS and echosounder. The accuracy of depth measurements by sounding data was analyzed according to change of robot-ship's speed in the water. The field experiment results showed that as robot-ship's speeds were slow, accuracy of sounding data were increased. Until Robot-ship's speed was up to 5 km/hr, the accuracy of sounding data were included reliable section of normal distribution.

  • This paper deals with the verification of the functions about mining robot, which is the system for developing deep seabed resources by applying V&V(verification and validation). In order to overcome water pressure of 500 bar and to travel on soft ground, and to operate in deep sea environment with bad conditions, it is necessary to develop a robot that can satisfy various deepsea conditions. A mining robot has been developed based on simulation based design and Multidisciplinary design optimization. In order to verify the developed robot, lab test and real sea test should be performed for various marine environment conditions. There are too many requirements to consider, such as space, time, cost, personnel, and environment to do performance test. So it is costly and time consuming for developing robot. In order to solve this problems, V&V technique was applied to mining robot. The stages of mining robot design, fabrication and commission were verified.

  • This study developed a surveillance robot for a ship. The developed robot consists of ultrasonic sensors, an actuator, a lighting fixture and a camera. The ultrasonic sensors are used to avoid collision with obstacles in the environment. The actuator is a servo motor system. The developed robot has four drive wheels for driving. The lighting fixture is used to guide the robot in a dark environment. To transmit an image, a camera with a pan moving and a tilt moving is equipped on the upper part of the robot. AdaBoost algorithm trained with 15 features, is used for face recognition. In order to evaluate the face recognition of the developed robot, experiments were performed.

  • In order to build a ship, painting on ship cargo tank is one of the most dangerous parts as it involves working in high altitudes and a closed ship cargo tank. Therefore, researchers have been developing devices that will enable mobile robots to operate on vertical walls. The wall-climbing robots have been widely used to attach on the wall such as suction types. These types can be utilized regardless of the wall material. However, it is required to adhere and control the suction cups. To moderate this drawbacks, this paper proposes an automatic painting robot that uses a permanent magnet mobile robot. Using the magnetic characteristics, this robot can move on the boat vertically and horizontally even while hanging on the ceiling of the ship cargo tank. Also, we made a prototype to test adhesive force of the permanent magnet wheel and mobile robot as well as the towing capacity and auto-piloting ability.
