  • This paper describes the development of a rehabilitation robot that can provide wrist bending exercise to a severe stroke patient staying in a bed ward or at home. The developed rehabilitation robot has a three-axis force sensor which detects three directional force Fx, Fy, and Fz. The sensor measures a bending force (Fz) exerted on the wrist and the signal force (Fx and Fy) which can be used for the safety purpose. The robot was designed for severe stroke patients in bed, and the robot program was developed to perform a wrist bending rehabilitation exercise. In our tests including a nine-day experimental exercise, the developed force sensor-based robot operated effectively and safely.

  • This paper represents the sensor combination technique of mobile robot to reduce the ambiguity and uncertainty of environment that prevents the mobile robot from recognizing the path planning and navigation. The sensors such as optical encoder, ultra sonar sensor, and infra-red sensor gathered the dynamic information of mobile robot that are used to detect the obstacle. Therefore, the mobile robot controller with sensor combination is stably demonstrated by the experimental results.

  • Stroke patients must do the rehabilitation exercise to recover their fingers' function using a rehabilitation robot. But the rehabilitation robots mostly have not the force sensors to control the applied force to each finger. Thus, in this paper, the development of a force sensor for thumb rehabilitation robot and four two-axis force sensors for four-finger rehabilitation robot were developed. The force sensor and four two-axis force sensors could be used to measure the applied force to each finger, and the forces could be used to control the applied forces to each sensor in rehabilitation exercise using in the rehabilitation robot. The developed sensors have non-linearlity error of less than 0.05 %, repeatability error of less than 0.03 %, and the interference error of two-axis force sensor is less than 0.2 %.

  • In this paper, we developed a sensor for monitoring the leakage current through the chassis of the robot. The leakage current sensor needs to be developed because it is a necessary part to prevent electric shock accidents that may occur through the chassis of a robot or an electric vehicle. This leakage monitoring sensor was developed to be mounted directly on the chassis of the robot. This sensor protects the control system from noise by discharging static and high-frequency noise that may occur in the chassis of the robot and monitors the leakage current by measuring the amount of current discharged through the ground. In this paper, a leakage monitoring sensor was developed with a simple structure using resistors, capacitors and OP-AMP, and the performance was evaluated.

  • Tilt sensor is required to control the attitude of the biped robot when it walks on an uneven terrain. Vision sensor, which is used for recognizing human or detecting obstacles, can be used as a tilt angle sensor by comparing current image and reference image. However, vision sensor alone has a lot of technological limitations to control biped robot such as low sampling frequency and estimation time delay. In order to verify limitations of vision sensor, experimental setup of an inverted pendulum, which represents pitch motion of the walking or running robot, is used and it is proved that only vision sensor cannot control an inverted pendulum mainly because of the time delay. In this paper, to overcome limitations of vision sensor, Kalman filter for the multi-rate sensor fusion algorithm is applied with low-quality gyro sensor. It solves limitations of the vision sensor as well as eliminates drift of gyro sensor. Through the experiment of an inverted pendulum control, it is found that the tilt estimation performance of fusion sensor is greatly improved enough to control the attitude of an inverted pendulum.

  • The forces and moments exerted on humanoid robot foot are important information for controlling or monitoring the robot. Multi-axis force/moment sensor can be installed under humanoid robot foot to measure forces and moments. The sensor should have large stiffness to support the robot weight and small size not to disturb the motion of the robot. In this paper, we designed a 6-aixs force/moment sensor which has good accuracy, large measuring range, and new compact structure. In addition, the proposed sensor is evaluated using analytical method and FEM(Finite Elements Method) method. Finally, it turned out that it has good performance.

  • The sensor data measured by the legged robot are used to recognize the physical environment or information that controls the robot's posture. Therefore, a robot's ambulation can be advanced with the use of such sensing information. For the precise control of a robot, highly accurate sensor data are required, but most sensors are expensive and are exposed to excessive load operation in the field. The seriousness of these problems will be seen if the prototype's practicality and mass productivity, which are closely related to the unit cost of production and maintenance, will be considered. In this paper, the use of a virtual sensor technology was suggested to address the aforementioned problems, and various ways of applying the theory to a walking robot obtained through training with an actual sensor, and of various hardware information, were presented. Finally, the possibility of the replacement of the ground reaction force sensor of legged robot was verified.

  • This paper describes the development of 6-axis force/moment sensor for an intelligent robot's foot. In order to walk on uneven terrain safely, the foot should perceive the applied forces Fx, Fy, Fz and moments Mx, My, Mz to itself. The applied forces and moments should be measured from a 6-axis force/moment sensor attached to a humanoid robot's foot(ankle). They in the published paper already have some disadvantage in the size of the sensor, the rated output and so on. The rated output of each component sensor (6-axis force/moment sensor) is very important to design the 6-axis force/moment sensor for precision measurement. Therefore, each sensor should be designed to be gotten similar the rated output under each rated load. So, the sensing elements of the 6-axis force/moment sensor should get lots of design variables. Also, the size of 6- axis force/moment sensor is very important for mounting to robot's foot. In this paper, a 6-axis force/moment sensor for perceiving forces and moments in a humanoid robot's foot was developed using many PPBs (parallel plate-beams). The structure of the sensor was newly modeled, and the sensing elements (plate-beams) of the sensor were designed using FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis. Then, the 6-axis force/moment sensor was fabricated by attaching strain-gages on the sensing elements, and the characteristic test of the developed sensor was carried out. The rated outputs from FEM analysis agree well with that from the characteristic test.

  • Arc sensor is indispensable to arc welding robot systems for compensating the joint misalignment such as mismatch of the workpiece, ill-conditioned positioner and thermal deformation during welding. Furthermore, the amount of these mismatches cannot be preivously expected, and changes from time to time. There are many kinds of seam trackers for correcting the welding path of the robot, where non-contact type sensors arc prevalently used in arc welding robot systems. In this study, an arc sensor was developed for GMA and FCA welding robot system. Since the arc sensor uses the arc characteristics during welding, the operating principle of the arc sensor must be adjusted according to the welding condition. Especially in GMA welding with the $CO_{2}$ shielding gas, the welding arc is not stable because of the short circuit and non-axial globular transfer mode of the molten droplet. In this study, the 2nd order least square curve fitting algorithm was adopted and the applicability of this algorithm was investigated for robot welding systems. For easy usage of the arc sensor, the operating parameters for arc sensor were limited to eight which can be easily determined by the operator.
