  • PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact of variable message signage (VMS) on traffic safety as a function of road curve radius using statistical methods. METHODS: In order to analyze the impact of VMS installations on traffic safety, travel speed, lateral distance, and geometric data relating to road curvature in each study area was acquired and analyzed for the impact of providing VMS information on driver performance and traffic safety using statistical methods including student t-test, Mann-Whitney test, and the Anderson-Darling test for estimating traffic safety hazard zone in each lane. RESULTS: As a result of analyzing driver performance characteristics before and after providing VMS information, it was determined that by providing VMS information, mean travel speed is deceased and vehicles are driven with increased precision, following the centerline in the first and second lanes. Also the results of analyzing traffic safety impacts of VMS indicate that traffic safety performance factors in the first lane of the Gapyeong section can, on average, increase in the left and right side of the lane by 19.22% and 68.98%, respectively, and in the case of the second lane, safety impacts, on average, can increase in both sides by 100%. For the Hongcheon section, traffic safety impacts in the first lane, on average, can increase along the left and right sides of the lane by 32.31% and 47.18%, and within the second lane, traffic safety can be increased along the left and right side of the lane by 10.97% and -0.01%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, the impact on traffic safety obtained by providing VMS information for road sections with smaller curve radii is greater than can be obtained for road sections with larger curve radii.

Abstract In this paper, we designed and implemented an efficient road congestion analysis system using regional information. To extract vehicle regions from a road image, the system process the image in five steps: segmentation, small region elimination, region rectangularization, region merging and region deletion. First, we segment road image by a threshold value. Then, we eliminate useless small regions to extract vehicle region, and perform region rectangularization. Finally, we extract vehicle region of each lane of the road by region merging and deletion. This method has the advantage of measuring road congestion without additional information such as background images. But this method must be applied to road images without shadow.

  • The structure supporting road sign is a road information facility for ensuring the safe transportation and smooth traffic. But, lots of road information facilities were damaged by the typhoon "Maemi" in 2003. Such damaged facilities should be rehabilitated and could increase economic loss by causing traffic accident. Therefore, in this study, behavior that reduce wind load and improve wind resistance of the structure supporting road sign are studied about wind load beyond design specification by abnormal climate as below. The first is wind load reducing technique such that shear key resist wind load that is not greater than design wind speed but in case that it is over the design wind limit, column member is rotated on the inner steel pipe axis by the brittle failure of shear key. The second is the technique such that fail-safe the overturning of road sign panel by equipment installation in the vertical member. The third is the technique of installing stiffening plate inside the vertical member to relieve stress concentration.

This approach aims at software development and followed applications of remotely sensed imagery to transportation geographic analysis. At first, GDPA (Gradient Direction Profile Algorithm) and main modules in it are overviewed, and newly implemented results under MS visual programming environment are presented with main user interface, input imagery processing, and internal processing steps. Using this software, road network are automatically generated. Furthermore, this road network is used to transportation geographic analysis such as gamma index and road pattern estimation. While, this result, being produced to do-facto format of ESRI-shapefile, is used to several types of road layers to urban/transportation planning problems. In this study, road network using KOMPSAT EOC imagery and IKONOS imagery are directly compared to multiple road layers with NGI digital map with geo-coordinates, as ground truth; furthermore, accuracy evaluation is also carried out through method of computation of commission and omission error at some target area. Conclusively, the results processed in this study is thought to be one of useful cases for further researches and local government application regarding transportation geographic analysis using remotely sensed data sets.

  • This paper discusses a deep learning-based road surface analysis system that collects data by installing vibration sensors on the 4-axis wheel bearings of a vehicle, analyzes the data, and appropriately classifies the characteristics of the current driving road surface for use in the vehicle's control system. The data used for road surface analysis is real-time large-capacity data, with 48K samples per second, and the A2B protocol, which is used for large-capacity real-time data communication in modern vehicles, was used to collect the data. CAN and CAN-FD commonly used in vehicle communication, are unable to perform real-time road surface analysis due to bandwidth limitations. By using A2B communication, data was collected at a maximum bandwidth for real-time analysis, requiring a minimum of 24K samples/sec for evaluation. Based on the data collected for real-time analysis, performance was assessed using deep learning models such as LSTM, GRU, and RNN. The results showed similar road surface classification performance across all models. It was also observed that the quality of data used during the training process had an impact on the performance of each model.

  • For the safe operation of autonomous vehicles, the representative technology of the 4th industrial revolution era, a combination of various technologies such as sensor technology, software technology and car technology is required. An autonomous vehicle is a vehicle that recognizes current location and situation by using the various sensors, and makes its own decisions without depending on the driver. Perfect recognition technology is required for fully autonomous driving. Since the precise road maps provide various road information including lanes, stop lines, traffic lights and crosswalks, it is possible to minimize the cognitive errors that occur in autonomous vehicles by using the precise road maps with location information of the road facilities. In this study, the definition, necessity and technical trends of the precise road map have been analyzed, and the HD(High Definition) map prototype based on the web GIS has been built in the autonomous driving-specialized areas of Daegu Metropolitan City(Suseong Medical District, about 24km), the Happy City of Sejong Special Self-Governing City(about 33km), and the FMTC(Future Mobility Technical Center) PG(Proving Ground) of Seoul National University Siheung Campus using the MMS(Mobile Mapping System) surveying results given by the National Geographic Information Institute. In future research, the built-in precise road map service will be installed in the autonomous vehicles and control systems to verify the real-time locations and its location correction algorithm.

  • The intention of this study is to extract the spatial and attribute information of road facility for Geospatial Information System(GIS) using graphic solution. Terrestrial photogrammetry has a lot of possibility for the acquisition of road facility information, which has much convenience in locating camera station, selecting the direction, and taking multiple images of the object at the fixed position. This study intended to develop the technique using single frame images only for the raw image data, being able to apply in the case where comparative high accuracy is not required and rigorous photogrammetric method is not available or rapid acquisition of information is need. As the results, we can find the efficiency in plane feature mapping and determining the dimensions of the road facilities.

  • Road information is one of the most significant geospatial data for applications such as transportation, city planning, map generation, LBS (Location-Based Service), and GIS (Geographic Information System) database updates. Robust technologies to acquire and update accurate road information can contribute significantly to geospatial industries. In this study, we analyze the limitations of ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) road extraction, which is a recently introduced object-based road extraction method using high-resolution satellite images. Object-based ACO road extraction can efficiently extract road areas using both spectral and morphological information. This method, however, is highly dependent on object descriptor information and requires manual designations of descriptors. Moreover, reasonable iteration closing point needs to be specified. In this study, we perform improved ACO road extraction on VHR (Very High Resolution) optical satellite image by proposing an optimization stopping criteria and descriptors that complements the limitations of the existing method. The proposed method revealed 52.51% completeness, 6.12% correctness, and a 51.53% quality improvement over the existing algorithm.

  • This paper proposes a method to recognize the noisiness of road images connected with the extraction of lane-related information in order to prevent the usage of erroneous information. The proposed method uses a fuzzy neural network(FNN) with the back-Propagation loaming algorithm. The U decides road images good or bad with respect to visibility of lane marks on road images. Most input parameters to the FNN are extracted from an edge distribution function(EDF), a function of edge histogram constructed by edge phase and norm. The shape of the EDF is deeply correlated to the visibility of lane marks of road image. Experimental results obtained by simulations with real images taken by various lighting and weather conditions show that the proposed method was quite successful, providing decision-making of noisiness with about 99%.

  • This paper presents the implementation of an automatic road sign recognizer for an intelligent transport system. In this system, lists of road signs are processed with actions such as line segmentation, single sign segmentation, and storing an artificial sign in the database. The process of taking the video stream and extracting the road sign and storing in the database is called the road sign recognition. This paper presents a study on recognizing traffic sign patterns using a segmentation technique for the efficiency and the speed of the system. The image is converted from one scale to another scale such as RGB to grayscale or grayscale to binary. The images are pre-processed with several image processing techniques, such as threshold techniques, Gaussian filters, Canny edge detection, and the contour technique.
