We described the above-ground plant species composition and measured a range of soil physico-chemical properties and the composition and size of the soil seed bank in the remnant natural vegetations on the flood plains of the Han River within Seoul, South Korea. We used analysis of variance and multivariate analyses to analyse the data and S${\o}$rensen's similarity index to compare the composition of the vegetation and seed banks. The soils were circum-neutral and composed of mainly sand and silt fractions with a very limited clay component; a gradient based on sand/clay proportions was identified. The soil seed banks varied markedly between- and within-sites and had much greater species diversity than the above-ground vegetation. Two of the major dominants in the vegetation (Miscanthus saccariflorus and Phragmites australis) were found at very low densities in the seed bank. The site differences appeared to be correlated with the sand-clay gradient, suggesting that the soil properties differentially affected seed inputs into the soil, or that the processes than controlled sediment deposition during floods was also important in differentially affecting seed deposition. Lastly, there was relatively little similarity between the vegetation, dominated mainly by perennials, and the seed bank which contained a relatively large proportion of annuals and biennials. This result suggests that after disturbance caused by flooding there is the potential for many other species to colonize. This may impinge on the regeneration potential of the sites and cause concern for the future conservation of these important remnants of natural vegetation.

Soil seed banks as natural storage of plant seeds play an important role in the maintenance and regeneration of watershed. Natural regeneration potential of the soil seed bank of Land use types (LUTs) in Ogun River watershed (ORW) was investigated. ORW was stratified using proportionate sampling technique into Guinea Savannah (GS), Rainforest (RF) and Swamp Forest (SF) Ecological Zones (EZs). Three LUTs: Natural Forest (NF), Disturbed Forest (DF) and Farmland (FL) were purposively selected in GS: GSNF, GSDF, GSFL; RF: RFNF, RFDF, RFFL and SF: SFNF, SFDF, SFFL, respectively. Systematic line transects was used in the laying of the sample plots. Sample plots of 25 m×25 m were established in alternate positions. Ten 1 m×1 m quadrats were randomly laid for soil core sampling from previously randomly selected ten plots. The core samples (10) were pooled per plot in each LUT and placed in individual trays. Ten trays with sterilized soil were used as control. The trays were watered regularly and checked for seedlings emergence fortnightly for 18 months. The experimental design used was 3×3 factorial experiments. ANOVA, Diversity index (H') and Similarity index (SI) were used to analyze the data. There was significant difference in seedling emergence among ecological zones and land use types (p<0.05). A total of 4,400 seedlings emerged from the soil samples. All species were distributed among 32 families. FL in the RF had the highest number of germinated seeds (705±37.33 seedlings) followed by DF in the RF (701±49.6 seedlings). The lowest emergence was in NF of the SF (199±28.41 seedlings). DF in the RF had highest number of species (34) distributed among 22 families. Emergence from soil seed bank of NF in ORW was generally with more of tree species than herbs that were predominant in FL and DF.
The environmental damage caused by river-improvement and slope of incision cliff can dest habitations of animate nature and it takes long time for restoration. River system constructed with stability of flood control, fine biotope, harmony with surroundings should be need to protect and restore nature. Therefore, in this study, conduct comparative experiment in various methods which are stable hydraulically and develop vegetation on revetment of bank, stream bed protection and disaster prevention aspect.
The purpose of this study is to offer information about the current river conditions and basic data of streams in Busan city, by selecting 20 underground streams and evaluating their multilateral stream assessment. Concerning the evaluation of streams, 4 sections including the general index, the bank index, the river characteristic index, and the ecological environment characteristic index were evaluated. Ahead of the evaluation, the study divided Busan city into 4 zone for a systematic river investigation. Then, the study allocated code names to each river, and conducted literature research and a field survey of streams. Based on this, the study applied the evaluation of multilateral stream assessment. As a result, out of 4 entire grades, there was no grade 1 or grade 2. Instead, 35% were grade 3, 60% were grade 4, and 5% were grade 5. When looking into the evaluation results by Zone, the Dongbusan Zone showed the highest index, and the Suyeonggang Zone, the Jungbusan Zone, and the Nakdonggang Zone followed, in order.
Results investigated backwater phenomena at Geumho river basin to get a basic data for Daegu basin area development plan are as the follows. 1. It is a A=0.35 L 1.848 (r = 0.97), the relationship between basin area and river length at Geumho river. 2. Dividing the rainfall of Geumho river basin as two parts, a first half rainfall and a second half rainfall, the amount of a first half rainfall appeared 57.5% comparison with total rainfall. 3. The maximum flood discharge appeared 12 hrs. continuous rainfall rather than 24 hrs. continuous rainfall. 4. Results investigated backwater phenomena from Geumho II bridge to chungchun appeared the rising water level of 69 cm, 55 cm, 44 cm, at section III in the starting point water level of 1.8 m, 2.4 m, 4.0 m respectively. 5. Results investigated backwater phenomena by the flood water level appeared a similar form. There was a average rising water level of 30 cm at section III. At the results of this computation, it was confirmed that section III was affected the highest backwater phenomena among the observed river reaches in Geumho river. In addition, this paper should be given a assistance to decide a economic and safe section in construction of bank of river and estuary barrage.
As part of a new riverside development project, various types of bridges and covering bridges were constructed in natural river estuary; and these structures got in the way of the flow of the river, which has resulted in a topographical change in natural river estuary, decrease in the gross sectional area of flow, and rise of water level. As a result, surrounding areas are suffering from damages due to overflowing of river over the bank. This study was designed to provide basic data for efficient design of structures, by examining resistance and characteristics in the surrounding areas of bridges based on changes in the span length ratio.
The Saemangeum master plan includes dredging and waterproofing materials, construction projects that can change the hydraulic characteristics of the Saemangeum and Mangyeong and Dongjin River basins. In this study, the river safety of 2030 when the Saemangeum master plan was completed for 100 year frequency, 500 year frequency and 100 year frequency applied RCP 8.5 scenario was examined using Delft3D. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that there was no overflowing point at the 100 year frequency, but the difference between the flood level and the river bank elevation was relatively small at the curved and river joint part. At the 100-year frequency with the 500-year frequency and the RCP 8.5 scenario, the possibility of overflowing at several locations was confirmed. The possibility of river bed loss due to fast velocity appears in the upstream part of Mankyung River and it is necessary to monitor the safety of hydraulic structures continuously. In addition, it is expected that the expansion of the area showing the characteristics of the lake due to dredging will affect the sediment mechanism and water quality, so detailed and diverse studies will be needed.
This paper examines the extent to which the Mekong River Basin countries have achieved socioeconomic benefits based on regional cooperation through the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Program, focusing on hydropower development and the Mekong Power Grid. This study pays attention to the time period from 2012 to 2022. The benefit sharing approach is employed to evaluate the extent to which hydropower development and the Mekong Power Grid have contributed to the regional energy trade in the GMS program. The GMS program was launched by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1992, and the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam have taken an active part in the program. The goals of the GMS program are to achieve poverty alleviation, economic development, and regional cooperation in various sectors, including energy, tourism, and transportation. The GMS Economic Cooperation Program Strategic Framework 2030 (GMS-2030), in 2021, provides a new framework for prosperous and sustainable development in the river basin. In the energy sector, the GMS program has been instrumental in facilitating hydropower development and creating the Mekong Power Grid with the Regional Grid Code (RGC), contributing to economic benefits and promoting regional trade of hydroelectricity. It is argued that the GMS program has enhanced regional cooperation between the riparian countries. Despite such achievements, the GMS program has faced challenges, including the gap of economic development between the riparian countries, socioeconomic and environmental concerns regarding hydropower development between the Upper and Lower Mekong countries, and geopolitical tensions from the US-China rivalry. These challenges should adequately be addressed within the program, which can guarantee the sustainability of the program for the river basin.
Two dimensional steady and unsteady numerical models are applied to bend reaches of the Lower Han River and the superelevation at the Ichon-Banpo bend area of Han River was observed. The flow characteristics in the meandering river are complicated due to the effects of the centrifugal force. The centrifugal force makes the outside water surface level increase and the outside velocity decrease. To study this complex flow studying two dimensional flow is important and useful to design flood control countermeasures, the analysis of sedimentation and the site selection of intake structures. Especially, the superelevation between inside and outside of the bend should be considered to determine the height of embankment. In this study, the water surface elevations in both bank sides of the bend were measured in two reaches during floods in 2007 and 2008. And then the two-dimensional simulation using RMA-2 model was carried out. The upstream and downstream boundary conditions on bend reaches were determined by FLDWAV which is one-dimensional unsteady model. Finally, the observed data are compared with simulation results and the results of the several superelevation formulas, and the flow characteristics of the bend are discussed.
