  • General features of sediment budget for the Nakdong River before the Four Rivers Restoration Project were analyzed using surveying, dredging, and mining data for the past 20 years, as well as sediment data measured from the tributaries, and numerical modeling, etc. As a result of the sediment budget analysis of the Nakdong River before the Four Rivers Restoration Project, sediment inflow supplied from the watershed is $2,100,000m^3/yr$ and sediment outflow including mining and dredging volumes is $10,180,000m^3/yr$. Therefore, the bed change volume estimated by the sediment budget analysis is $-8,080,000m^3/yr$ of the bed erosion volume which is similar to the analysis result ($-8,300,000m^3/yr$) of natural and artificial bed changes using the surveyed data.

  • To estimate the nutrients delivery characteristics of Chogang stream to Keum River, sediment and soil characteristics were analyzed in the stream and in the stream bank. Along the stream, soil samples from river sediment were collected and tested monthly for phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations. Nitrogen concentration in the sediment is much lower than that of soil in the river bank especially in summer presumably due to the high desorption characteristics of nitrogen by the increasing rainfall energy during summer. Instead, the concentrations of phosphorus were similar for the sediment and the soil in the river bank due to the strong adsorption characteristics of phosphorus. Batch tests were performed to evaluate the desorption potential of the sediments. Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was applied to quantify soil erosion in each watershed due to rainfall. It was estimated that approximately 25% of total phosphorus by mass basis could be released from the sediment if the water was disturbed vigorously. The mass load of nitrogen and phosphorus into the Chogang Stream from the watershed were evaluated from the USLE and release ratio of phosphorus.

  • Bottom sediment pollution with heavy metals of the Sventoji River in Ukmerge, Lithuania using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is analyzed in this article. During the research, qualitative and quantitative parameters of heavy metal concentrations and their distribution were investigated. This article presents obtained results of study, where bottom sediment samples were examined from both shores of the river of Sventoji. During this research, received data was treated using GIS software, which helped to interpolate the data of concentrations into the research polygon of the river. GIS software also helped to evaluate the urban runoff influence to the bottom sediment quality and exclude sources of pollution. The runoff dischargers which transport surface wastewater to the river were registered before sampling. At the mouth of streams, flowing into the river of Sventoji, additional samples were taken. After comprehensive river bottom sediment research there is a possibility to assess the extent of anthropogenic activity and its impact on the river ecosystem and human health.

  • This study examines the effects of removal of the sediment protection weir at Taehwa river mouth on hydraulic and around river environment considering the fact that the effects of the sediment protection weir which is installed to protect water level drop of Ulsan harbor caused by sediments according to flood in Taehwa river, Dong-chun, and so forth may add water quality contamination by flow stagnance in normal and drought period and accumulation of pollutants. The result is as follows. First, it is estimated from the examination of variation characteristics water depth and level for Taehwa river before and after removal of the sediment protection weir that about 0.01m of water depth down according to removal of the sediment protection weir occurs when low flow runs between the sediment protection weir which is located about 2.3km away from the estuary and Samho-gyo which is about 9.0km away from the sediment protection weir, and about 0.01~0.56m(directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir 0.56m, Myongchon-gyo 0.14m, Ulsan-gyo 0.03m, and Taehwa-gyo 0.02m) downs when design flood flows between the sediment protection weir and the upstream of Taehwa-gyo which is 10km away from the sediment protection weir. Therefore, it is thought that variation of hydraulic characteristics of water depth down and so on according to removal of the sediment protection weir is slight because water depth variation is only about 1cm between directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir and Samho-gyo. Next, it is estimated from the examination of variation characteristics of flow velocity for Taehwa river before and after removal of the sediment protection weir that about 0.0lm/s of flow velocity increase occurs between the directly upstream point of the sediment protection weir which is about 2.4km away from the estuary and the directly upstream point of Samho-gyo when low flow runs, and about 0.01~0.44m/s increases between the sediment protection weir and Samho-gyo when design flood flows. Therefore, riverbed erosion by the increased flow velocity is concerned but it is thought that the concern about riverbed erosion is not great because the mean velocity is about 0.07~1.36m/s when low flow runs, and about 1.02~2.41m/s when design flood flows for the sector which experiences the flow velocity variation.

  • Hydraulic characteristics affecting sediment transport capacity due to the weir operations were investigated and developed sediment rating curves for four gaging stations (Nakdong, Gumi, Waegwan, and Jindong) in Nakdong River. Analysis found that the sediment transportaion capability had been decreased and it could be proved from the field measurement records in 2013. Applicabilities of nine sediment transport prediction techniques, which are imbeded in GUIDE program, were examined and adopted for the four gaging stations. Analysis of sediment balance for Nakdong River, including 9 major tributaries, had been carried out with pseudo 2-D numerical model and found that: 1) sedimentation phenomena will be prevailed along the Nakdong River. 2) Engelund-Hansen technique shows the least error in estimation of sediment balance. 3) Engelund-Hansen technique most appropriately describes the sediment characteristics for four gaging stations. 4) Estimated error from the sediment balance for Nakdong River was smaller than the error caused by the estimation of sediment incomming from 9 tributries. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the accuracy of predicting the sediment incomming from the tributaties for better sediment balance analysis.

  • We surveyed physico-chemical properties of bottom water and sediment to evaluate the influence of sediment on the eutrophication in the downstream of Nagdong River from 1998 to 2000. From May to August, DO concentration of bottom waters dropped below 5 mg $O_2/l$ and $NH_4\;^+$ and $PO_4\;^{3-}$ concentrations significantly increased in the bottom waters, resulting in the great differences between surface and bottom waters. Fluxes across water-sediment interface would be substantially active in this period. The serial orders of the water fertility or eutrophication were Joman River > Sonagdong River > Nagdong River. The organic nutrient contents of sediment increased toward the lower parts of the river system. Organic contents of the sediment would be under the influence of water pollution and exhibited a negative correlation with sediment bulk-density or particle size. The concentrations of exchangeable inorganic nutrients of sediment were greater than those of pore waters, and $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $NH_4\;^+$ and $SiO_2$ increased along the sediment depth. $PO_4\;^{3-}$ and $NO_3\;^-$ concentrations of the pore water were less than the overlying waters, while NH4+ and $SiO_2$ concentrations showed opposite trends. Exchangeable nutrients of sediment could be the repository for t]me nutrient exchange in the water-sediment interface.

  • An experiment to study the effect of temperature, light, and dredging on release of nutrients downstream from Gongjicheon in the Uiam reservoir was carried out in the laboratory using sediments from different depths. At various water temperatures, dissolved total nitrogen was not released, but the average nutrient flux of dissolved total phosphorus was increased (0.034 at $15^{\circ}C$, 0.005 at $20^{\circ}C$, 0.154 at $25^{\circ}C$, $0.592mg/m^2/d$ at $30^{\circ}C$). Dissolved total phosphorous was released in controlled darkness. In contrast, in controlled light, the concentrations of dissolved total phosphorous and dissolved total nitrogen in the overlying water steadily decreased during the study period (70 d), because they were continuously consumed by the growth of photosynthetic algae. However, there was no significant relationship between water nutrient concentration, nutrient release, and the depth of the sediment. We concluded that the dredging of sediment would not affect the nutrient release rate of the sediment, because there were no significant differences in the nutrient concentrations released from the sediment. When the sediment was removed from the surface to 20 cm in depth, the nutrients were not transferred to the water body, implying that the sediment removal had little effect on secondary pollution.

  • This study was conducted with the national river, Munsancheon, which is located in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The sediment discharge of Munsancheon was directly measured to analyze the sediment characteristics, and the results were used in the numerical model to predict the long-term river bed variation. The flow-total sediment discharge relation was derived using the measured total sediment discharge, and the results were compared with the total sediment discharge that was calculated using the existing prediction formula to derive a proper sediment discharge prediction method. In the actual measurements, the total annual sediment discharge was 5,478 ton/year, and the specific sediment discharge was 29.23 ton/$km^2$/year. The Ackers & White formula resulted in the values very close to the actual measurements. With the actual sediment discharge, geographical and hydrologic data as the input variables, HEC-6 and GSTARS models were comparatively analyzed. The test results showed that the HEC-6 model is suitable for the reliable prediction of the long-term river bed variation. Accordingly, the model was used for the long-term river bed variation prediction in this study. In the case of Munsancheon, deposition was continued in the downstream area and erosion occurred in the upstream area on the whole. It was expected that the stream would be stabilized in the river bed condition of 20 years later. The river bed variation was within 1 m, which was at the significance level. In the downstream area that is influenced by tide, however, the accumulation was continuously increasing within the section 2,000-7,000 m from the outlet. It seems that this should be considered in establishing the river management plans.
