Connection of adjacent buildings with stiff links is an efficient approach for seismic pounding mitigation. However, use of highly rigid links might alter the torsional response in asymmetric plans and although this was mentioned in the literature, no quantitative study has been done before to investigate the condition numerically. In this paper, the effect of rigid coupling on the elastic lateral-torsional response of two adjacent one-story column-type buildings has been studied by comparison to uncoupled structures. Three cases are considered, including two similar asymmetric structures, two adjacent asymmetric structures with different dynamic properties and a symmetric system adjacent to an adjacent asymmetric one. After an acceptable validation against the actual earthquake, the traditional random vibration method has been utilized for dynamic analysis under Ideal white noise input. Results demonstrate that rigid coupling may increase or decrease the rotational response, depending on eccentricities, torsional-to-lateral stiffness ratios and relative uncoupled lateral stiffness of adjacent buildings. Results are also discussed for the case of using identical cross section for all columns supporting eachplan. In contrast to symmetric systems, base shear increase in the stiffer building may be avoided when the buildings lateral stiffness ratio is less than 2. However, the eccentricity increases the rotation of the plans for high rotational stiffness of the buildings.
In the design and operation of robot arms with flexible links, the equations of motion are required to exactly model the interaction between rigid motion and elastic motion and to be formulated efficiently. Thus, the flexible link is represented on the basis of the D-H rigid link represented to measure the elastic deformation. The equations of motion of robot arms, which are configured by the generalized coordinates of elastic and rigid degrees of freedom, are formulated by using F.E.M to model complex shaped links systematically and by eleminating elastic mode of higher order that does not largely affect option to reduce the number of elastic degree of freedom. Finally presented is the result of simulation to flexible robotic arm whose joints are controlled by direct or PD control.

Among the various industrial robots, palletizing robots have received particular attention because of their higher productivity in accordance with technological progress. When designing a palletizing robot, the main components, such as the servo motors and reducers, should be properly selected to ensure its performance. In this study, a practical method for selecting the motors and reducers of a robot was proposed by performing the dynamic analysis of rigid-flexible multibody systems using ANSYS and ADAMS. In the first step, the links and frames were selected based on the structural analysis results obtained from ANSYS. Subsequently, a modal neutral file (MNF) with information on the flexible body was generated from the links and frames using modal analysis through ANSYS and APDL commands. Through a dynamic analysis of the flexible bodies, the specifications of the major components were finally determined by considering the required torque and power. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the analysis results were compared with those of a rigid-body model. The comparison showed that rigid-flexible multibody dynamic analysis is much more useful than rigid body analysis, particularly for movements heavily influenced by gravity.
Ride comfort of a vehicle is often determined by rubber bushes in suspension system. If transmission forces versus deformations across the bushes are available under operational conditions, improvement of the ride comfort could be done with more ease. Recently, the transmission forces are measured using custom-made force transducers inside the links. This study presents a feasibility study on estimation of the rubber bush deformations using vibration signals on the rigid links. Linear variable displacement transducers as well as piezoelectric accelerometers are used to expand frequency range to very low frequency, which cannot be done with accelerometers only. How to estimate the bush deformation from the two vibration signals on the links are presented together with experimental results.
The aim of this paper is to clarify the structural compliance of the constrained flexible manipulator and to develop the force control algorithm by using the compliance of the links. The proposed structural compliance control consists of the position control to utilize a flexible manipulator model (considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links) and the passive force control to utilize the rigid manipulator model (without considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links). We present the experimental results for the case when applying the only position control, and when applying the structural compliance control. Finally, a comparison between these results is presented to show the performance of our method.

We study RNA foldings and investigate their topology using a combination of knot theory and embedded rigid vertex graphs. Knot theory has been helpful in modeling biomolecules, but classical knots emphasize a biomolecule's entanglement while ignoring their intrachain interactions. We remedy this by using stuck knots and links, which provide a way to emphasize both their entanglement and intrachain interactions. We first give a generating set of the oriented stuck Reidemeister moves for oriented stuck links. We then introduce an algebraic structure to axiomatize the oriented stuck Reidemeister moves. Using this algebraic structure, we define a coloring counting invariant of stuck links and provide explicit computations of the invariant. Lastly, we compute the counting invariant for arc diagrams of RNA foldings through the use of stuck link diagrams.
The application of robot to industry is increasing and as a result the study on robot is widely being carried out. In this study, to improve the accuracy of robot motion the method which calibrates initially assumed link parameters is considered. This method calibrates 4N link parameters for N D.O.F. robot with rigid links.
In the design and operation of robitic arm with flexible links, the equation of motion are required to exactly model the interaction between rigid body motion and elastic motion and to be formulated efficientlyl. In this paper, the flexible link is represented by applying the D-H rigid link representation method to measure the elestic deformation. And the equations of motion of robotic arm, which are configured by the generalized coordinates of elastic and rigid degrees of freedom, are formulated from the principle of virtual power. Dynamic characteristics due to elastic deformation of each link are obtained by using F. E. M to model complex shaped link acurately and by eliminating elastic modes of higher order that do not largely affect motion to reduce the number of elastic degrees of freedom. Also presented is the result of simulation of flexible robotic arms whose joints are controlled by direct or PD control.
