  • The present study used a video analysis system to quantify the kinematical data of step shoot motion by male university handball players. From the results of analyzing dynamic variables of step shoot motion according to shooting direction were drawn conclusions as follows. 1. The height of release was proportional to the height of players, and the height of release appeared low in left-side attacks. This is probably because the left-right-throwing angle is larger in left-side attacks than that in center attacks and right-side attacks and, as a result, the throwing arm is lowered down in throwing. 2. The leftward inclination angle of the body was larger in order of right-side attacks > center attacks > left side attacks. 3. Players' throwing form was close to three quarter style in left-side attacks. In center and right-side attacks, the arm was somewhat more upright but still it was more three quarter style than overhand style. 4. The front-rear throwing angle at the moment of release was much higher in right-side attacks than in left-side ones. This is probably because the point of time for releasing the ball is usually late in right-side attacks and, as a result, the front-rear throwing angle becomes quite large. 5. The contribution of body parts on the ball speed was higher in order of the forearm > upper arm, hand > shoulder joint. 6. In players whose distance between the two legs at the moment of release, their body usually did not incline to the side much. Thus it is considered necessary to correct the right leg in their shooting motion. 7. According to the result of analyzing throwing form, the speed of the ball at the moment of leaving the hand was faster in right-side attacks than in left-side and center attacks.

  • Biophotons from three healthy subject's hands were measured every Friday for one year. The correlation coefficients between the left and right palms were found to be 9.0, and a similar value was also obtained between the left and right back of hands. However, the correlations between the palm and back of a hand turned out to be low, on the average only 0.5. These results are consistent with the result of Zhang's $CO_2$ production rate experiments on the acupuncture points. The high correlation between the left and right, and the low correlation between the palm and back are interpreted according to the acupuncture theory of meridians. The palm and the back correspond to the yin and yang meridians, respectively. And their behaviors are rather opposite, thus they show low correlations.

  • The aim of this study is to identify characteristics of 2D:4D according to type of handedness. Data was collected from October, 4th, 2010 to April, 30th, 2012. After handedness assessment, 2nd and 4th finger length were measured by vernier calipers. This study showed remarkable gender difference of 2D:4D in left hand for left handers and right hand for right handers, However, there was no significant difference according to type of handedness in each gender. The correlation between left and right 2D:4D in males right handedness was higher than that of male left handedness, otherwise, in case of female, that of left handedness was higher than that of right handedness. The results of this study suggest that the 2D:4D of left handedness does not differ from that of right handedness, however, gender difference and correlation between left and right 2D:4D show different characteristics according to handedness.

  • This paper suggests a hand gesture recognition technology to control smart devices using multiple Doppler radars and a support vector machine(SVM), which is one of the machine learning algorithms. Whereas single Doppler radar can recognize only simple hand gestures, multiple Doppler radar can recognize various and complex hand gestures by using various Doppler patterns as a function of time and each device. In addition, machine learning technology can enhance recognition accuracy. In order to determine the feasibility of the suggested technology, we implemented a test-bed using two Doppler radars, NI DAQ USB-6008, and MATLAB. Using this test-bed, we can successfully classify four hand gestures, which are Push, Pull, Right Slide, and Left Slide. Applying SVM machine learning algorithm, it was confirmed the high accuracy of the hand gesture recognition.

  • Purpose : This study was to present the functional brain mapping of both functional magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS) in a case of schizencephaly. Materials and methods : A 28-year-old man, who had left hemiplegia and schizencephaly in right cerebral hemisphere, was exacted with both functional MRI and TMS. Motor function of left hand was decreased whereas right hand was within normal limit. For functional MRI, gradient-echo echo planar imaging($TR/TE/{\alpha}$=1.2 sec/90 msec/90) was employed. The paradigm of motor task consisted of repetitive self-paseo hand flexion-extension exercises with 1-2 Hz periods. An image set of 10 slices was repetitively acquired with 15 seconds alternating periods of task performance and rest and total 6 cycles (three ON periods and three OFF periods) were performed. In brain mapping, TMS was performed with the round magnetic stimulator (mean diameter; 90mm). The magnetic stimulation was done with 80% of maximal output. The latency and amplitude of motor evoked potential(MEP)s were obtained from both abductor pollicis brevis(APB) muscles. Results : Functional MRI revealed activation of the left primary motor cortex with flexion-extension exercises of healthy right hand. On the other hand, the left primary motor cortex, left supplementary motor cortex, and left promoter areas were activated with flexion-extension exercises of left hand. In TMS, magnetic evoked potentials were induced in no areas of right cerebral hemisphere, but in 5 areas of left corebral hemisphere from both abductor pollicis brevis. Latency, amplitude, and contour of response of the magnetic evoked potentials in both hands were similar. Conclusion : Functional MRI and TMS in a patient with schizencephaly were successfully used to localize cortical motor function. Ipsilateral motor pathway is thought to be secondary to reinforcement of the corticospinal tract of the ipsilateral motor cortex.

  • The main purpose of this research was to examine the EMG characteristics of driver's upper limb and driving performance for operating accelerator and brake pedal by using four types of left hand control devices(Push/Pull, Push/Right angle, Push/Rock, Push/Twist) during simulated driving. The persons with disabilities in the lower extremity have problems in operation of the vehicle because of functional impairments for controlling accelerator and brake pedal. Therefore, if hand control device is used for adaptive driving controls in persons with lower extremity loss, the disabled people could improve their quality of mobility life by driving a car. Twenty subjects were involved in this research to assess driving performance and EMG activities for operating accelerator and brake pedal by using four types of left hand controls in driving simulator. We measured EMG responses of six muscles(posterior deltoid, middle deltoid, biceps, triceps, extensor carpi radialis, and flexor carpi radialis) during pulling and pushing movement with four types of left hand controls for acceleration and braking. STISim Drive 3 program was used for evaluation test of four types of left hand control devices in straight lane course for time to reach target speed and brake reaction time. While operating the four types of left hand controls for acceleration, EMG activities of posterior deltoid in normal subjects were significantly increased(p < 0.05) compared to the disabled subjects. It was also found that EMG responses of triceps and posterior deltoid were significantly increased(p < 0.05) when using the Push/Right angle type than Push/Pull type. While operating the four types of left hand controls for braking, EMG activities of flexor carpi radialis and triceps in subjects with disability were significantly increased(p < 0.05) compared to the normal subjects. It was shown that muscle responses of posterior deltoid, middle deltoid and triceps were significantly increased when using the Push/Right angle type than Push/Rock type. Time to reach target speed and brake reaction time in subjects with disability was increased by 2.5% and 4.6% on average compared to normal subjects. The person with disabilities showed a tendency to relatively slow performance in acceleration at the straight lane course.

  • This study investigated activation of cerebral cortex in patients with hemiplegia that was caused by neural damage. Key-point control movement therapy of Bobath was performed for 9 weeks in 3 subjects with hemiplegia and fMRI was used to compare and analyze activated degree of cerebral cortex in these subjects. fMRI was conducted using the blood oxygen level-dependent(BOLD) technique at 3.0T MR scanner with a standard head coil. The motor activation task consisted of finger flexion-extension exercise in six cycles(one half-cycles = 8 scans = $3\;sec{\times}\;8\;=\;24\;sec$). Subjects performed this task according to visual stimulus that sign of right hand or left hand twinkled(500ms on, 500ms off). After mapping activation of cerebral motor cortex on hand motor function, below results were obtained. 1. Activation decreased in primary motor area, whereas it increased in supplementary motor area and visual association area(p<.001). 2. Activation was observed in bilateral medial frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus of left cerebrum, inferior frontal gyrus, inter-hemispheric, fusiform gyrus of right cerebrum, superior parietal lobule of parietal lobe and precuneus in subjedt 1, parahippocampal gyrus of limbic lobe and cingulate gyrus in subject 2, and inferior frontal gyrus of right frontal lobe, middle frontal gyrus, and inferior parietal lobule of left cerebrum in subject 3 (p<.001). 3. Activation cluster extended in declive of right cellebellum posterior lobe in subject 1, culmen of anterior lobe and declive of posterior lobe in subject 2, and dentate gyrus of anterior lobe, culmen and tuber of posterior lobe in subject 3 (p<.001). In conclusion, these data showed that Key-point control movement therapy of Bobath after stroke affect cerebral cortex activation by increasing efficiency of cortical networks. Therefore mapping of brain neural network activation is useful for plasticity and reorganization of cerebral cortex and cortico-spinal tract of motor recovery mechanisms after stroke.
