  • It is well known that reduction of friction loss due to the valve train system greatly affects on improvement of fuel economy in internal combustion engine. In order to investigate friction characteristics of valve train system we carried out friction force measurement using test rig developed by ourselves. From test results, we concluded that characteristics of lubrication and friction torque on the valve train system such as mixed and hydrodynamic was mainly governed the contact type between cam and tappet.

  • An overview of 30 feet sailing yacht design is presented, with an emphasis on the factors contributing to start-up popularization. After prescribing the configurations of the purposed yacht, the design of the hull form with a rudder and a keel, are schematically described. Also the determinations of the dimensions of the sail and rig are performed.

  • Needle contamination was investigated using a test rig simulated the knitting points in the knitting machine in relation with the characteristics of knitting yarn such as yarn type and moisture contents. When used open-end yarn compared with combed and carded ring-spun yarns, the needle contamination was significantly increased because of the higher friction between yarn and needle by the fly and other impurities. Also Lower moisture content of the yarns aggravated the needle contamination. In addition knitting yarn breakage was substantially influenced by the higher needle contamination.

  • In order to establish a stability and buoyancy criteria of a floating vessel, the geometrical property as well as external forces and moments be dealt with. This paper discusses in general terms hidden but more salient factors of forces and moments of both natural and artificial origin, particularly wind, with regard to vessels of more general type such as oil drilling rigs.

  • The problematic effects of fly creation on circular knitting machines during the knitting process were investigated in order to develop a new method for tackling the problem. A new idea, i.e. coating the yarn surface with a polymer film, was studied. Important physical properties of the coated yarm were studied and compared with normal yarn. A new test-rig was designed to measure the coefficient of friction and the degree of shedding of yarn. Yarns were coated with seven polymer materials and the performance of the coated yarns was tested and the results are discussed.

  • Wear characteristics of Plastic and Nylon pinions against steel gear were studied to gain a better understanding of their tribological behaviors. Wear tests were conducted with power circulating gear test rig under dry contact conditions. Specific wear rates were measured as a function of applied load and the number of revolution. The worn teeth surfaces were examined with a profile projector and a camera. Nylon pinion showed lower specific wear rates than acetal pinion, but suffered teeth breakage under high load per unit tooth width. The dominant wear mechanisms found were adhesion and abrasion.

  • This paper aims at the problem that design the network of Rig-star type with the minimum cost, which the Ring is composed of the selected nodes(concentrators) among the several candidate nodes on the network and other nodes(terminals) is connected to the Ring by star subnetwork. Especially, we consider the terminal reliability in network design problem. We develop the heuristic algorithm for network design problem to obtain the near optimal(best) solution for problem. We use an add-heuristic method and 2-exchange method in developing the heuristic algorithm.

  • The continuously variable transmission (CVT) of which speed ratio can change continuously in a fixed range has the benefits of low fuel consumption and exhaust gas because it enables the engine of a vehicle to operate in a high efficiency range regardless of vehicle speed. The speed ratio of belt type CVT is controlled by adjusting line pressure. The one of the line pressure control methods, mechanical-hydraulic control is usually adopting VDT's control method, in which the secondary solenoid valve has two functions both a regulator and a line pressure controller. However, this control method could not show the high performance of CVT with optimal driving capability because of the limitation of simple control algorithm, and it could not gain market share sufficiently in spite of the advantage of CVT with low fuel consumption. On the other hand, the electro-hydraulic control method gives the enhancement of power performance and low fuel consumption by implementing various driving mode using the proportional control or PWM control. The key of CVT technique is to develop a control algorithm of the electro-hydraulic solenoid valve in order to implement the speed ratio efficiently. In this paper, the line pressure control algorithm is proposed and the hydraulic system is controlled using metal belt type CVT test rig and the embedded ECU platform.

  • Recently, HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a 4-valve small diesel cylinder head with a tangential and helical intake port. The flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate(Cf), swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (ms) were measured in the steady flow test rig using the impulse swirl meter and the analysis of in-cylinder flow field was conducted by experiment using the PIV and calculation using the commercial CFD code. As the results from steady flow test indicate, the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is increased over 13% than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased approximately 15%. From in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform near the TDC. In addition, the results of the calculation are good agreement with the experimental results.
