Residues of Fujione (Fudiolan, fungicide) and Ortran (Acephate, insecticide) in Korean rice crop were studied. Also the persistencies of the pesticides in rice paddy soil were investigated in field and in laboratory. The residual levels of the pesticides in rice plant, straw, unpolished and polished rice were varied with the application rates of the pesticides. The residues of Fujione and Ortran in unpolished rice were $0.07{\sim}0.09ppm$ and $0.01{\sim}0.53ppm$, respectively. The half life of Fujione was 30 days under aerobic and 150 days under flooded condition in the laboratory system. Whereas in the paddy field it was about 100 days. In the case of Ortran it was $3{\sim}4$ days and $13{\sim}14$ days in aerobic and flooded condition, respectively in laboratory system.
Applications of green manures generally improve the soil quality in rice paddy in part through restructuring of soil microbial communities. To determine how different green manures affect soil microbial communities during the early stages of rice growth, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles were used to the effects of different management practices: 1) conventional farming (CF), 2) no-treatment (NT), 3) Chinese milk vetch (CMV), 4) green barley (GB), and 5) triticale in paddy field. With applications of green manures, soil organic matter was significantly higher than CF, while soil Na concentration was significantly lower compared with CF (p<0.05). Total soil microbial biomass of CMV was higher (p<0.05) than NF by approximately 31%. The highest ratio of monounsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acid was found in the GB plot, followed by CMV and triticale compared with CF (p<0.05), possibly indicating that microbial stress was less in GB and CMV plots. Populations of Gram-negative bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi also were significantly higher green manures than CF (p<0.05). Our findings suggest that GB should be considered as optimum green manure for enhancing soil microbial community at an early growing stage in paddy field.

Statistical analysis was carried out to identify the influence on environmental factors between paddy water chemical properties and Chl-a concentration (algae biomass index) using water samples collected in June for 3 years at rice paddy field. As a result of correlation analysis, there was a significantly negative relationships in DO(-0.366) and pH(-0.141). In contrast, significantly positive relationships were founded in COD(+0.431) and TOC(+0.422). According to the result of factor analysis, 3 factors were obtained and indicated that PC1 were Ca, K, Mg cation, PC2 were TOC, T-P, $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ and DO, and PC3 were T-N and $NH_4{^+}-N$. As a result of linear regression analysis to develop a prediction model for chl-a concentration, the total amount of explanation was 20.6%, PC2 had the greatest influence on the increase of chl-a concentration and PC1 also showed a positive correlation but the PC3 has a negative correlation. In conclusion, carbon and phosporous content are the main factors for the increase algae blooms of rice paddy.
An experiment was carried out to find out the effects of water foxtail on weed control and rice yield as well as on the reduction of nitrogen application in no tillage transplanted paddy field. Paddy field was dominated by water foxtail whose soil covering degree was adjusted from 8 to 6 by treatment of paraquat (70 l /10a of solution diluted by 1, 000 times). Thirty five-day old seedling was mechanically transplanted and reduced nitrogen, 80% of conventional application was applied at the paddy field. The higher failure in seedling stand was observed at higher degree of soil covering by water foxtail. The failure of seedling stand with covering degree of 8(no paraquat) was 37.4%, while that of covering degree of 6(paraquat-treated) was 12.3%. However, the seedling stand failure was completely recovered at covering degree of six at two weeks after transplanting. The mechanical transplanting made water foxtail in the paddy field fall on the ground whose panicle part was recovered from falling sometimes after transplanting and whole plant died with slow scenesence untill the late of June. But the water foxtail affected by paraquat produced the new panicle from uppernode of stem with dead leaves at early of June and it become die slowly untill the early of July. Though several rice field weeds were observed in the order of Echinochloa crusgallis, Cyperus serotinus, Lemma paucicostata during the active tillering stage of rice, the value of weed control due to the dominance of water foxtail was 77~78%. The death and subsequent decay of water foxtail during the active tillering stage of rice induced the soil reduction which again defect the growth of rice root. The more vigerous rice growth was observed in the plot dominated with water foxtails, than control plot. The yields of rice in the water foxtail (degree 6) plot was 629kg per l0a as brown rice, the same as that of control plot. In conclusion, the no-tillage transplanting with control of covering degree of water foxtail (to degree 6) was effective in reduction of input cost such as herbicide and nitrogen fertilizer, as well as weed control without reduction of rice yield.
Rice cultivation in paddy field affects the global balance of methane ($CH_4$) as a key greenhouse gas. To evaluate a potential use of by-product gypsum fertilizer (BGF) in reducing $CH_4$ emission from paddy soil, $CH_4$ fluxes from a paddy soil applied with BGF different levels (0, 2, 4 and $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$) were investigated by closed-chamber method during rice cultivation period. $CH_4$ flux significantly decreased (p<0.05) with increasing level of BGF application. $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of BGF addition in soil reduced $CH_4$ flux by 60.6% compared to control. Decreased soil redox potential (Eh) resulted in increasing $CH_4$ emission through a $CO_2$ reduction reaction. The concentrations of dissolved calcium (Ca) and sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$) in soil pore water were significantly increased as the application rate of BGF increased and showed negatively correlations with $CH_4$ flux. Decreased $CH_4$ flux with BGF application implied that ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ion led to decreases in electron availability for methanogen and precipitation reaction of Ca ion with inorganic carbon including carbonate and bicarbonate as a source of $CH_4$ formation under anoxic condition. BGF application also increased rice grain yield by 16% at $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of BGF addition. Therefore, our results suggest that BGF application can be a good soil management practice to reduce $CH_4$ emission from paddy soil and to increase rice yield.
This study was investigated the possibility of measuring chlorophyll in paddy crops using two kinds of chlorophyll meters(SPAD-502, Field Scout). The results of correlation analysis showed the 0.7758(r$^2$) relationship between the chlorophyll contents of paddy leaves measured by SPAD and spectrophotometer. It indicates that chlorophyll content in paddy crops could be measured using the SPAD. Considering the data of the SPAD and Field Scout there was significant difference between their chlorophyll contents measured by the SPAD and Field Scout. Likewise, such results were consistent with the corrected data using light intensity. According to the results, it can be concluded that it is difficult to describe the rice chlorophyll measured by the Field Scout more accurately than the SPAD when using one standard spectrum and another spectrum for reflectance measuring. The chlorophyll variance measured at a research institute and a farmer's field revealed that the output of SPAD was more reliable than that of the Field Scout.
This study was conducted to establish the optimum seeding rate in different soil salinity level for yield stability of broadcasting on flooded paddy surface to the reclaimed saline land of south-western part at Gyehwado substation of the Honam Agricultural Research institute in $2003{\sim}2004$. Soeganbyeo was tested in the Munpo series (fine sand loam) the results obtained is as follows: As seeding rate was higher, the number of seeding stand was increased and the number of seeding stands in the low salinity field is sharply increased than those of the medium salinity field. The length of culm in medium salinity field tends to be shorter than that of the low salinity field and as seeding rate was increased, the lodging is severe. The milled rice yield was increased as up to 9 kg/10a in low and medium salinity soil. Complete rice was no significantly increased over 5 kg/10a seeding rate in low salinity field and over 7 kg/10a seeding rate in medium salinity field. Considering the yield of milled and complete rice, seeding stand and lodging, The proper seeding rate is $5{\sim}7kg/10a$ in low salinity and $7{\sim}9kg/10a$ in medium salinity for broadcasting on flooded paddy surface at the reclaimed saline land of southwestern part.

A method for automatically driving paddy vehicles, such as rice transplanters, etc., straight ahead in a paddy field was investigated . The direction of such vehicles must be precisely controlled to do the operations as straight. However, the alignment of the from wheels becomes distorted due to the unevenness of the ground, preventing the vehicle form going straight. If the proper alignment of the front wheels is maintained , the vehicle can be driven straight ahead greater precision. To investigate the influence of the ground uneveness, the behavior of a paddy vehicle running over an obstacle was quantified. The left wheel ran over an obstacle on a flat concrete road surfaced. When the steering wheel was free, the front wheels were forced toward the left when vehicle went up the obstacle and toward the right when the vehicle went down it. The torsion of the wheel when the vehicle went down the obstacle was larger than that when it went up ,so it turned right 5 degrees. Sinc hydraulic control steering decreased the steering angle , it turned right 3 degrees. These results suggest that a vehicle can be driven straight ahead with high precision when the steering angle is changed in response to the direction and inclination of the vehicle . Such results were obtained in a paddy field tests.

A pilot study was performed at the experimental field of Konkuk University in Seoul, to examine the feasibility of the constructed wetland system for sewage and the effect of treated sewage irrigation on the paddy rice culture and its soil characteristics. The constructed wetland performed well, in that effluent concentrations of pollutants were significantly lower than concentrations of the influent. Median removal efficiencies of BOD$_{5}$ was about 78% and slightly lower during winter. Removal efficiencies form TN and TP were approximately 48 and 21%, respectively, and relatively less effective than that of BOD$_{5}$. Irrigation of treated sewage to paddy rice culture did not affect adversely in both growth and yield of rice. Instead, plots of treated sewage irrigation showed up to 50% more yield in average than the control plot. It implies that treated sewage irrigation might be beneficial to rice culture rather than detrimental as long as it is treated adequately and used properly. Soil was sampled and analyzed before transplanting and after harvesting. pH was slightly increased due to irrigation water, but it may not be concerned as long as the treated sewage is within the normal range. EC was increased in first year but decreased in second year, therefore salts accumulation in the soil could be less concerned. OM and CES was slightly increased, which might be beneficial on growing plants. TN did not show apparent pattern. Available phosphorus was decreased after rice culture, but the quantity of phosphorus(TP-available phosphorus) was rather increased which implies that excessive phosphorus supply may result in phosphorus accumulation in the soil. Overall, the constructed wetland was thought to be an effective sewage treatment alternative, and treated sewage could be reused as a supplemental source of irrigation water for paddy rice culture without causing adverse effect as long as it is treated adequately and used properly. For full-scale application, further investigation should be followed on environmental risk assessment, tolerable water quality, and fraction of supplemental irrigation.ion.

Direct-seeding has major advantages such as labor and cost saving by eliminating preparation of seed bed and transplanting. But, it required increased input of fertilizers and pesticides because of the extended paddy period. Direct seeding in wet paddy (DSWP) gives faster growth and more uniform seedling emergence than direct-seeding in dry paddy. This research had an objective to develop an efficient N management practices for DSWP with split application of N fertilizer. A paddy field experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of starter N and N-topdressing which was delayed N application until 5-leaf stage, with comparison to transplanting (TP). Total amount of N application were two levels; 110kg and 77kg/ha. The N applications were split four times during rice growth stages; starter, topdressing at 5-leaf stage, top dressing at tillering stage, and topdressing at panicle initiation stage. DSWP had more tillers/$m^2$ than TP, but with the delayed heading. The DSWP plots which received N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage without starter N had higher leaf area index (LAI) and leaf greenness than the TP plot. Also, these DSWP plots had high leaf-N concentration at the heading stage, as calculated from leaf chlorophyll meter readings. Rice yield in DSWP with N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage was significantly higher than that in TP and in DSWP with starter N. Energy and N use efficiency were improved in DSWP with N-topdressing at 5-leaf stage. But, there were no significant differences in grain yield between the two levels of total amounts of N applications, 77kg and 110kg/ha. We concluded that starter N could not be used effectively by rice seedlings, but topdressing N at 5-leaf stage was an efficient N management for rice growth and yield in DSWP system.
