The second leaves from 30 days old seedlings of two rice cultivars which were selected as tolerant (cv. Chokoto) and susceptible (cv. Weld pally) cultivar were soaked in the concentration of $10^{-6}$, $10^{-5}$, $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-3}M$ of oxyfluorfen for 10, 15 and 22hrs and anatomical characteristics were abserved. Dipping to the solutions were carried out either directly to the attached leaves or to the seperated leaves. Development of any symptoms in epidermis, bundle sheath, mesophyll cells and bulliform cells were microscopically inspected. Both cultivars showed reductionin leaf thickness, but the susceptible ones was more sensitive than the tolerant. The degradation and disappearance of epidermal cell layer, breakage of bundle sheath cells, shrinkage of mesophyll cells and disappearance of bulliform cells were general response as affected by oxyfluorfen treatment. The susceptible cultivars showed such responses at the concentration of $10^{-5}M$ for 10 hrs while tolerant ones $10^{-3}M$, for 10 hrs. Those treatments were more effective in seperated leaves than in attached ones. The epicuticular wax layer of leaves treated as above for 20 hrs was inspected by SEM. Weld pally, the susceptible cultivar (Weld pally) showed rapid cleavage of wax layer under $10^{-5}M$ concentration while the tolerant (Chokoto) showed only minor damage on wax layer at the concentration of $10^{-3}M$.

The impact of climate change on rice plants in Gangwon province was examined by comparing the climatic conditions during the recent 10 years (2000~2009) with those of normal (1971~2000) years, and by evaluating the rice plant responses. The daily mean air temperature increased by $0.5^{\circ}C$ while the daily range decreased by $0.1^{\circ}C$ as compared with the normal years. During the main rice growing period in field (from June to September) precipitation increased from 900 to 1,051mm and sunshine hours decreased from 704 to 619 hours. The respiration consumption effect during the rice growing period increased by 0.07 as a result of increased air temperature and reduced sunshine hours. The optimum heading date (determined by the mean air temperature for 40 days after the heading) was delayed in Chuncheon, Hongcheon, Wonju, and Gangneung compared with the normal. The maximum climatic yield potential based on mean temperature and sunshine hours for 40 days after the rice heading decreased by 94 kg/10a mainly due to the decrease in sunshine. The mean air temperature for 40 days after the rice heading from 1999 to 2009 in Chuncheon, Cheorwon, and Gangneung was generally above $22^{\circ}C$ implying that yield and quality of rice can be reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to delay the heading date by planting mid- to late-maturing varieties or by changing the transplanting date in order to produce high quality rice and to maintain rice productivity. In addition, it is also important to develop or select cultivars suitable to changing climate for each region in Gangwon province.

Production of high quality pigmented rice contained with high content of anthocyanin, and polyphenol was significantly influenced by cultivation environments like transplanting date and cultivation location. This study was carried out to establish an optimum transplanting date and cultivation region to produce maximum content of anthocyanin, polyphenol and antioxidant activity of pigmented rice varieties (black, red colored). Three transplanting times (May 20, June 5, June 20) and four different sites (Miryang, Uiseong, Sangju, Bonghwa) were evaluated with five pigmented rice cultivars. Anthocyanin and total polyphenol index to average temperature during 30 days after heading (DAH) of black, red pigmented rice varieties showed that anthocyanin and total polyphenol contents were decreased by 10% and 9%, respectively, with increasing average temperature of $1^{\circ}C$. The optimum ripening temperature of the 30 DAH for the production of high anthocyanin and total polyphenol was 22 to $23^{\circ}C$ for early maturity black rice, 21 to $22^{\circ}C$ for mid-late maturity of black and red rices, respectively. On the other hand, an estimated heading date of pigmented rices in return according to the optimum ripening temperature of the 30 DAH was ranged Aug. 11 to 17 for early maturity black rice, Aug. 25 for mid-late maturity black, red rice variety in Jecheon, Aug. 27 to Sep. 2 for early maturity type, Sep. 3 to 6 for mid-late type in Daegu. It seemed that Jecheon, Boeun, Mungyeong, and Yeongju were optimum regions for cultivation of pigmented rices. The estimated sowing date of pigmented rices for high anthocyanin and total polyphenol production based on the optimum heading date was May 18 to 26 for early maturity black rice variety, April 11 for mid-late black, red variety in Jecheon, May 23 to 28 for early type, April 9 to 26 for mid-late type in Boeun, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristic of the cooked rice added with glutinous and non-glutinous sorghum. The sorghum cultivars were Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv. Hwanggeumchal, Nampungchal (glutinous), and Donganme (nonglutinous), and rice cultivar was Ilpum rice. The cooking properties and pasting characteristics of cooking rice adding with sorghum according to varieties and different addition rates evaluated. The cooking properties and pasting characteristics had significant changes with the varieties and different addition rates of sorghum. With increased addition rates of sorghum, the pasting temperature, peak viscosity, trough viscosity, breakdown viscosity, and final viscosity were decreased. With increased addition rates of sorghum, the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents before and after cooked rice were increased. Total polyphenol contents of 30% addition rates before cooking rice with Hwanggeumchal, Nampungchal, and Donganme sorghum were 1,693.30, 1,890.98 and $2,386.11{\mu}g/g$ sample, whereas those after cooking rice with sorghum were 1,189.28, 1,190.42 and $1,397.87{\mu}g/g$ sample, respectively. The high level of DPPH radical scavenging activity before and after cooking rice with sorghum were 126.29 and 70.58 mg TE/100g sample in the Donganme in 30% addition rates. Also, ABTS radical scavenging activity was 135.56 and 83.12 mg TE/100g sample, respectively. The results of this study show that the addition of sorghum can make cooked rice improved antioxidant activity.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of water depths on seedling stand and early growth of califonia rice varieties, S201, M202, A301, Italico livorno and Korean variety, Hwaseongbyeo, and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) The coleoptile length of rice was longer with deep water depth while for the radicle length shorten. As water depth was increased, the percentage of seedling stand were decreased slightly in rice, while sharply increased in barnyardgrass. Plant height of rice with increasing water depth were longer, whereas that of barnyardgrass reduced significantly with weaker. Tiller number of rice and barnyardgrass were significantly reduced as water depth increased. Dry matter weight and healthy score of rice seedling at 35DAS were highest in 7.5cm water depth followed saturated moisture, 15, and 22.5cm water depth, while for barnyardgrass those were especially negatively affected by deep water depth. These results showed that the seedling stand and early growth of barnyardgrass was highly suppressed by deeper water levels compared with rice. Rice cultivars which are showes growth characteristics in deeper water levels at early growth stage were Italico livorno and S201 in Japonica / Indica.

This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of main rice varieties and control efficacy of HPPD inhibitor to major paddy weeds at the time of temperature rise due to climate change. Phytotoxicity of herbicide to rice was increased as temperature was increased, and more severe in root than shoot. The phytotoxicity of japonica rice cultivars for the rice were mild enough to recover. However, glutinous rice, super high yield rice, and Tongil rice varieties were damaged enough to decrease the yield. Shindongjinbyeo transplanted by June 15, showed phytotoxicity enough to recover. However, in the rice field on June 30 and on July 15, the rice showed a remarkable inhibition. The control effect of Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides was more than 90% under the temperature condition controlled artificially. However, Echinochloa oryzicola was controlled 40% at $27.5^{\circ}C$, which is a high temperature condition. In rice fields with different transplanting times, annual weeds except for E. oryzicola were highly controlled by 90% or more regardless of the time of transplanting.

This study was carried out to analysis the factor effected by milling rice rate, and to provide the developing rice varieties and cultivation technology. Panicle numbers per spike of Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo were 105 and 70, respectively. The primary branch panicle rate was Ilpumbyeo 56.2% and Chucheongbyeo 61.4%. The secondary panicle rate of Ilpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo was 43.3% and 37.9%, respectively. Grain filling rate using specific gravity showed that Ilpumbyeo was the lower filling rate than Chucheongbyeo. Hull weight per one grain was Ilpumbyeo 41.9 mg and Chucheongbyeo 3.92 mg, and hull weight per rough rice 1 kg was Ilpumbyeo 157.36 g and Chucheongbyeo 151.31 g. In milling rate, brown rice ratio by ripening degree of llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo with combine harvest was 81.22% and 82.52%. Milled/brown rice ration of llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo showed 92.14% and 92.51%. The milling recovery ratio of llpumbyeo was decreased 1.67% then Chucheongbyeo, and the difference was mainly due to the hull weight (0.61%), milled/brown rice ratio (0.37%) and ripening degree (0.69%). Although the varietal differences were found in hull weight and millied/brown rice ratio between llpumbyeo and Chucheongbyeo, the ripening degree was considered as the factor that could be reduced by cultivation technology and post-harvest management.
Eleven rice varieties, five normal-yielding and six high-yielding, were examined for proximate composition, mineral and fatty acid composition, and antinutrients. The proximate rice compositions for moisture, crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate, crude fiber and crude ash were 10.70${\sim}$15.88%, 5.03${\sim}$7.73%, 0.45${\sim}$1.33%, 74.56${\sim}$82.05%, 0.30${\sim}$0.73% and 0.31${\sim}$0.91%, respectively. The proximate composition of the various rice varieties was not significantly different except for moisture and carbohydrate. The contents of saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid of the rice varieties were 22.45${\sim}$25.99%, 36.50${\sim}$44.99% and 32.01${\sim}$46.02%, respectively. Several high-yielding rices varieties had higher oleic acid or linoleic acid. Ilmi and Nampyung had high oleic acid contents at ever 40%, and Dongjin No. 1, IlPum, Junam and Seachuchung had high linoleic acid contents at over 37%. The major minerals of rice were K and Mg and their respective contents were 85.62% and 25.55%. High-yielding rice varieties had significantly higher Mn and Na contents and lower Mg and Fe contents than normal-yielding rice varieties (p<0.05). Antinutrients such as lectin, phytic acid and trypsin inhibitor were not detected in any of the rice varieties.
To establish the dual-purpose barley cultivation for forage by clipping before overwintering and grain next year, an experiment was conducted to clarify the effect of clipping times and cultivars haying different winter habits in rice-barley cropping system at paddy field in southern Korea. Barley showed more forage yield by clipping once only on December 10 than that of twice-clipping on November 10 and December 10. Among experimented cultivars, Saegangbori (winter habit II) and Keunalbori (winter habit IV) produced higher forage yield in one time clipping than the others. On the contrary, higher total digestive nutrients(TDN) was gained from twice-cut plants. Barley clipped once or twice headed and matured without serious delay as compared to the conventionally sown barley. In spite of clipping in November and/or December, barley produced grain yield similar to that of the conventional. Conclusively, it was regarded that cultivars having II-III winter habit were suitable for dual-purpose barley cultivation for forage in winter season and grain harvest next year.
In order to determine the relationship between dwarf gene and GA$_3$ response, three dwarf cultivars, Fukei 71, Seolak, and Tanginbozu, which were known to have d 50, d 47 and d 35 gene, respectively, were used as parents in this study. Three parents and their F$_1$ and F$_2$ generations were grown. Tillers of each plant were devided into two parts at 15 days after transplanting and was transplanted. One part of them was sprayed with GA$_3$ 50 ppm at booting stage. The internode length were measured at ripening stage in terms of GA$_3$ response. The internode was significantly elongated in Seolak and Tanginbozu, but not in Fukei 71. All F$_1$ plants of the crosses were tall, and their internode and culm were significantly elongated with the spraying of GA$_3$. Dwarf plants which are not responded to GA$_3$ were selected in the F$_2$'s of Seolak/Fukei 71 and Fukei 71/Tanginbozu crosses, and backcrossed to Fukei 71. All of these BC$_1$F$_1$ plants were uniform in the culm length and not responded to GA$_3$ treatment. The dwarf gene, d 50 of Fukei 71 seems to be closely associated with the facter of non-response to GA$_3$.
