Global air temperature has risen by $0.6^{\circ}C$ over the last one hundred years due to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases. Moreover, this global warming trend is projected to continue in the future. This study was carried out to evaluate spatial variations in rice production areas by simulating rice-growth and development with projected high resolution climate data in Korea far 2011-2100, which was geospatially interpolated from the 25 km gridded data based on the IPCC SRES A2 emission scenario. Satellite remote sensing data were used to pinpoint the rice-growing areas, and corresponding climate data were aggregated to represent the official 'crop reporting county'. For the simulation experiment, we used a CERES-Rice model modified by introducing two equations to calculate the leaf appearance rate based on the effective temperature and existing leaf number and the final number of leaves based on day-length in the photoperiod sensitive phase of rice. We tested the performance of this model using data-sets obtained from transplanting dates and nitrogen fertilization rates experiments over three years (2002 to 2004). The simulation results showed a good performance of this model in heading date prediction [$R^2$=0.9586 for early (Odaebyeo), $R^2$=0.9681 for medium (Hwasungbyeo), and $R^2$=0.9477 for late (Dongjinbyeo) maturity cultivars]. A modified version of CERES-Rice was used to simulate the growth and development of three Japonica varieties, representing early, medium, and late maturity classes, to project crop status for climatological normal years between 2011 and 2100. In order to compare the temporal changes, three sets of data representing 3 climatological years (2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100) were successively used to run the model. Simulated growth and yield data of the three Japonica cultivars under the observed climate for 1971-2000 was set as a reference. Compared with the current normal, heading date was accelerated by 7 days for 2011-2040 and 20 days for 2071-2100. Physiological maturity was accelerated by 15 days for 2011-2040 and 30 days for 2071-2100. Rice yield was in general reduced by 6-25%, 3-26%, and 3-25% per 10a in early, medium, and late maturity classes, respectively. However, mid to late maturing varieties showed an increased yield in northern Gyeonggi Province and in most of Kwangwon Province in 2071-2100.
'Haepum' is a bacterial blight-resistant, medium maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality. It was derived from a cross between 'Iksan493' (cultivar name 'Jinbaek') and the F1 cross between 'Iksan495' ('Dacheong') and 'Iksan496' ('Jungmo1005'). Of these three cultivars, 'Jinbaek' is a bacterial blight-resistant mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality, 'Dacheong' is a mid-late maturing rice cultivar with multiple resistance to disease and insects, and 'Jungmo1005' is a mid-late maturing rice cultivar with lodging tolerance. To develop fixed lines, the anther culture method was applied to F1 plants. The cultivar 'Haepum' was selected using the pedigree method, yield trials, and local adaptability tests. The heading date of 'Haepum' was August 11th, three days earlier than that of 'Nampyeong' cultivar. Haepum' is a cultivar tolerant to lodging and it has short culms. Due to its low rate of viviparous germination, 'Haepum' could be useful for preventing pre-harvest sprouting in cultivation of medium maturing rice in the southern plain area of Korea. 'Haepum' carries two bacterial blight resistance genes (Xa3 and xa5), and in our study, it exhibited high-level and broad-spectrum resistance against bacterial blight, including K3a, the most virulent race in Korea. 'Haepum' is also resistant to the rice stripe virus and moderately resistant to rice blast. The yield of 'Haepum' was similar to that of 'Nampyeong'. 'Haepum' showed excellent grain appearance and good taste of cooked rice, and therefore it could contribute to the development of bacterial blight-resistant rice cultivars of improved quality. 'Haepum' would be suitable for cultivation in the southern plain area of Korea as well as in bacterial blight-prone areas. (Registration No. 6068)
Two cultivars which are glutinous (Hawcheongchalbyeo) and non-glutinous (Hawcheongbyeo) near isogenic line of rice, were used for this study. The objective of this experiment was to gain the basic information for increasing grain yield of waxy rice by means of source and sink size control. In both Hwacheongbyeo and Hawcheongchalbyeo, the trend of decrease in total and average spikelet weight was ranked as follows; removal of penultimate leaf< removal of flag leaf< removal of flag leaf and 3ya leaf from the top < removal of flag leaf and penultimate leaf < removal of flag leaf, penultimate leaf, and 3rd leaf from the top. The reduction yale of total and average spikelet weight per panicle of Hwacheongbyeo was higher than those of Hwacheongchalbyeo according to the removal of flag leaf, penultimate leaf, and 3rd leaf from the top. In both cultivars, high-density grain ratio and grain filling ratio of the primary branches were higher Hun those of the secondary branches by leaf clipping treatment. The spikelet number and total spikelet weight per pinicle in both Hwacheongbyeo and Hwacheongchalbyeo were decreased by removal of spikelets on branches compared with control, whereas average spikelet weight and grain filling ratio were increased. The increase rate of average spikelet weight of Hwacheongchalbyeo was much higher than that of Hwacheongbyeo by sink size control. High-density grain ratio by removal of spikelets on branches was higher in Hwacheongchalbyeo, but filled grain ratio was higher in Hwacheongbyeo.
Lipid-soluble fractions extracted with methylene chloride and ethyl acetate as well as 70% ethanolic extract were made from 5 cultivars of the pigmented rice brans (DZ 78, Elwee, LK1A-2-12-1-1, LK1-3-6-12-1-1 and Killimhukmi) to determine their antioxidative activities and to measure the contents of phenolic compounds, phytic acid, together with unsaponificated compounds such as retinol, tocopherol and stigmasterol. We also attempted to characterize candidate components in charge of antioxidation and measure their relative contents in each methylene chloride and ethyl acetate fraction by using GC-MS techniques. As the results, we found a 30% higher antioxidative activity with 26-fold greater phenolic compound content of the pigmented rices as compared to those of the normal rice. Especially, in Killimhukmi, the contents of the unsaponificated compounds such as retinol, tocopherol and stigmasterol were also found to be more than 2.3-fold greater than those of normal rice. However, we could not find the overall correlations between antioxidativity of rices and their color values, or unsaponificated compounds contents. Methylene chloride fraction from Killimhukmi and LK1A-2-12-1-1, both showing strong antioxidativity, contained relatively high contents of (Z)-9-hexadecenyl ester-9-octadecanoic acid and 2-Hydroxyl-1-1(hydroxymethyl) ethyl-9-octadecanoic acid, respectively. In ethyl acetate fractions, on the contrary, 1H indene, methyl ester-tetradecanoic acid and methyl ester-hexadecanoic acid were detected as the commonly-occurring substances in the 5 cultivars of pigmented rices, implying a possible role in antioxidative action.
During monocarpic senescence in higher plants, functional stay-green delays leaf yellowing, maintaining photosynthetic competence, whereas nonfunctional stay-green retains leaf greenness without sustaining photosynthetic activity. Thus, functional stay-green is considered a beneficial trait that can increase grain yield in cereal crops. A stay-green japonica rice 'SNU-SG1' had a good seed-setting rate and grain yield, indicating the presence of a functional stay-green genotype. SNU-SG1 was crossed with two regular cultivars to determine the inheritance mode and identify major QTLs conferring stay-green in SNU-SG1. For QTL analysis, linkage maps with 100 and 116 DNA marker loci were constructed using selective genotyping with $F_2$ and RIL (recombinant inbred line) populations, respectively. Molecular marker-based QTL analyses with both populations revealed that the functional stay-green phenotype of SNU-SG1 is regulated by several major QTLs accounting for a large portion of the genetic variation. Three main-effect QTLs located on chromosomes 7 and 9 were detected in both populations and a number of epistatic-effect QTLs were also found. The amount of variation explained by several digenic interactions was larger than that explained by main-effect QTLs. Two main-effect QTLs on chromosome 9 can be considered the target loci that most influence the functional stay-green in SNU-SG1. The functional stay-green QTLs may help develop low-input high-yielding rice cultivars by QTL-marker-assisted breeding with SNU-SG1.
Extrusion degree of stigma, numbers of opened florets at different time during anthesis, angle of opening florets and outcrossed seed set percent were investigated in four male sterile rices having background of Korean cultivars; Suwon 296A, Suwon 304A, Suwon 310A and Suwon 296GMS, and the Chinese cytoplasmic genetic male sterile rice Zhenshan 97A as control in order to get basic informations for hybrid rice breeding. The results obtained were summarized as follows; Extrusion degree of stigma in the four Korean male sterile lines tested was lower than in the Chinese one Zhenshan 97A. The better extrusion of stigma showed the higher outcross rate in male sterile rices. There were almost no relationships between peak of anthesis and outcrossed seed set in the male sterile rices tested. Large anthesis angle with long anthesis duration appeared to be essential for high outcrossed seed set of the male sterile rices. The genetic male sterile line showed the larger anthesis angle than the cytoplasmic and genetic male sterile one in the lines having the same background to the Korean rice cultivar Suwon 296.
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) refers to seed germination during ripening, due to loss of dormancy before harvest. As PHS in rice causes decrease in grain yield and quality, tolerance to PHS is an important trait of Japonica cultivars in Korea. It is important to investigate the related genes and environmental factors, because PHS is a quantitative trait. In this study, we examined PHS rates at three different times according to the cumulative daily mean temperature after heading (CTAH) for 5 rice cultivars released in Korea for 5 years from 2013 to 2017 to determine the effect of environmental factors on PHS. ABA content in ripening spikelets was analyzed to understand how it was related to PHS tolerance. PHS rate increased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. PHS rate was significantly different (p < 0.001) among the cultivars, showing Dasanbyeo, Jounbyeo, and Nampyeongbyeo to be PHS-tolerant, and Jopyeongbyeo and Gopumbyeo to be susceptible at all the CTAH of 800, 1000, and $1200^{\circ}C$. In 2015 and 2016, PHS rates were relatively higher, because of high temperature and frequent rainfall during the ripening period. In each cultivar, ABA content decreased as CTAH increased from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. However, there was no significant correlation between ABA content and PHS tolerance among the cultivars.
The changes in contents of chlorophyll and free proline in the seedling leaves of ten rice cultivars as affected by salt stress were checked in order to obtain the basic information on the judgement of the degrees of salt injury. The difference in salt injury among the cultivars was clearly observed about 25 days after 6% salt treatment. Chlorophyll content was decreased in both Gayabyeo and Taebaegbyeo for 14 days after different salt treatment as salt concentration was increased and the decreased tendency was much higher in Taebaegbyeo than in Gayabyeo over 0.4% salt concentration. Chlorophyll content in Gayabyeo after 0.6% salt treatment was decreased slowly, while in Taebaegbyeo, deminished very rapidly as time progressed, therefore it decreased by about 16% in Gayabyeo and 67% in Taebaebyeo compared to the control at 20 days, respectively. The relationship between chlorophyll content and the degrees of salt injury in ten rice cultivars showed significant negative correlation at 10 day after 0.6% salt treatment. Free proline content in Gayabyeo was increased gradually for 14 days after different salt treatment as salt became higher, while in Taebaebyeo, it was increased rapidly under 0.6% but rather decreased under 0.8% salt concentration. Particularly, it was much higher Taebaegbyeo than in Gayabyeo under salt concentration from 0.4 to 0.6%. Free proline content in Gayabyeo after 0.6% salt treatment was increased from 15 days, on the other hand in Taebaegbyeo, it was increased from 5 days, but rather decreased from 20 days, and it was 6 times higher in Taebaegbyeo than in Gayabyeo at 10 days. There was significant positive correlation between free proline content and the degrees of salt injury in ten rice cultivars at 10 days after 0.6% salt treatment. From the above results, chlorophyll and free proline content may be used as an indicative character of intensity of salt stress as well as varietal difference in resistance to salt stress in the seedling stage.

This study was conducted to determine antioxidant compounds and antioxidative activities of by-products including rice bran and half-crashed rice by rice milling. DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activities and reducing power have been used to investigate the relative antioxidative activities of 70% EtOH extracts from by-products. The contents of total polyphenol, total flavonoid and $\gamma$-oryzanol in EtOH extracts were measured by spectrophotometric methods, and vitamin E was carried out by HPLC. Ethanol extract from rice bran showed markedly antioxidative activity than that from half-crushed rice. Among EtOH extracts from milling by-products, rice bran of 'Hongjiju' tended to have the most effective antioxidative activity compared to the others. These results suggested that by-products of rice milling have the potent antioxidative activity and these activity are partly due to the antioxidative compounds present in by-products including rice bran and half-crushed rice.

Rice consumption in Korea is continuously decreasing; therefore, methods for reducing rice stocks are now being proposed. Increasing the consumption of rice and reduce these stocks will require that the rice processing industry be developed beyond simply using cooked rice as food. The Korean people's eating habits have also diversified recently, and the consumption of bread is increasing. Therefore, breeding a cultivar for rice flour is now necessary. Here, a line suitable for processing into rice flour was cultivated by deriving a mutant line by tissue culture of Ilpum. Mutant populations were investigated for major agricultural traits in the field, and grain characteristics and endosperm characteristics were investigated after harvest. Among the lines, line 29111 had similar agricultural characteristics to the background Ilpum, and excellent grain quality, and was selected for further analysis. The physicochemical properties that determine taste were similar or improved. However, unlike Ilpum, 29111 had a non-uniform starch structure and a characteristic powdery endosperm because large and male starch grains are evenly distributed. Therefore, 29111 was viewed as a breeding line suitable for processing and for excellent agricultural characteristics and taste. The added value can be increased by diversifying the uses of rice. The taste was improved and a method for breeding cultivars with grain characteristics for glutinous rice that would satisfy both producers and consumers was presented.
